  1. Note: >>**RUMOR**<<

I wanted to be perfectly clear. That way when someone freaks the heck out and goes nuts, I can ridicule you for having been so prominent with ***RUMOR***.

My son texted me from South Paulding High School a few minutes ago. There is a huge police presence at the school this morning. He said the RUMOR floating around the kids is that there was potentially going to be a school shooting there today. He said he'll keep me posted. I replied and asked "Did happen" or "might happen". He replied "might happen".

Now, when I was a kid this happened all the time, but they brought the dogs and it was usually a drug search. He says there are no dogs.

I just telephoned the school, and they corroborated his note that there is enhanced security because of this ***RUMOR***. The individual on the phone would not repeat the rumor, but it appears that they are very much so on top of things.

Even though this is a rumor, our school board and the authorities have taken it seriously. Instead of getting on here and griping about them all the time, let's give them kudos for taking steps to nip this one in the bud.

  2. I'm sorry, November Rain, but my experience mirrors that listed here.

We received the first ever notice for a letter to be picked up at the office. It said "Final Notice". There was no first notice, second notice, or final notice.

I've watched my carrier drive on by on many occasions, leave a note that I had a package, and still have the package in her posession such that I couldn't pick it up until the next day (translation: miss work).

Mail carriers need to understand that MANY people are telecommuting nowadays, and we actually SEE them drive up, dump mail, and drive off. Then we go out to the box to find the message that they "knocked" when they patently DID NOT.

I have personally witnessed my carrier do this to me twice on "work from home" days. All I can imagine is she expected I wasn't here, and made a few shortcuts. Top that off with the fact that my handicapped wife sites here right inside the door MOST of the day, and has seen this condition MANY more times than I have.

Something really needs to be done, and it just seems all too often that the "system" isn't willing to do anything at all, or even give the APPEARANCE of following up.

That is the primary reason that ANY time I have a package to deliver, I refuse to send it USPS. I will go out of my way to get it to UPS, FedEx, Airport Express, or ANYONE else. They typically have better tracking systems, and frankly... Priority actually means priority. I may pay for the privilege, but these people can deliver in a market-based economy, and the USPS increasingly cannot.

That isn't your fault personally, but the system's fault.

The free market allows me to send stuff other ways, and I choose to do so.

  3. Back in Louisiana I used to frequent a coffee shop in town called "CC's". They had free Internet access, various overstuffed chairs and sofas (sofii?) good coffee and pastries and quiet music running all the time. they were open until 11PM, and catered to people who spent their time writing or studying.

Is there a similar place in the area? There are no CC's coffee houses here, and I need a place to write.

  4. Or you can call a rescue. There are tons of dog breed rescues out there--they take specific dog breeds like Labs or Shepherds, and there are plenty of rescues that will take any kind of dog and/or cat.

Unfortunately, the rescues are harder and harder to get pets from.

    My quick little story:

I did a pile of research to see what would be the best dog for our family. It had to be a short-hair breed with a "pack" mentality (i.e. adheres to the family's habits). It had to be relatively small, but very smart. I wanted an animal around for my wife during the day (she's in a wheelchair) that could keep her company while I'm working, and the kids are at school.

I decided that the best breed that fit this description was a beagle. I did about 3 weeks research into the habits of beagles, inherent physical problems/defects (like rotweiler hips and such). I read several books on care and feeding/training/lifespan, etc. I spent more time researching the dog than I did my last car purchase.

When I felt I was ready to commit the time and resources a pet needs, I contacted Beagle rescue here in Atlanta, and had to fill out a questionaire. We wanted this to be an inside dog, and we have room in our basement for a kennel cage for at night if we have guests or whatever, but intended for the pup to sleep with us or the kids, and trained to be walked in the morning and twice in the evening...we had the schedule all mapped out. The literature I'd read clearly demonstrated this wouldn't be a problem.

The rescue refused to allow me to buy the dog from them because I didn't have a completely fenced in yard. I told the lady that I couldn't afford a$5,000 fence for a $500 dog (I have almost an acre), and intended to have it as an inside dog to keep a shutin company. She proceeded to read me the riot act on why I didn't deserve a dog, and it's people like me that leave strays around, and make their job more difficult, etc. etc. etc.

I pointed out to her that it's people like her that cause people like me to go to mall pet shops and puppy farms to get our dogs that people like me will take care of, but an alarming number of people will leave out for them to have to contend with.

Hell, I have pet insurance with my company...I'm all set, but I couldn't rescue a pet due to the insensitivity and crass behavior of the woman at beagle rescue.

So, if anyone has a beagle that needs a home, look me up here on pcom. I'm still looking.

  5. I teach adult education and GED prep to consumers of mental health services.  A company has donated some computers to us, but did a DiscWipe on data, so I now have no operating system on them.  I've checked the cost and "Whoa, we don't have that kind of money".  Does anyone have a disc with an operating system I could use to get these computers up and running?  It would really be appreciated.

    Thanks, Sharon

    email or pm me

I'm going to reply here, since many Pcommers may not be aware.

The donation of these computers to you *should* have included the Operating System (as per the way MS writes their licenses)

    Why? you ask?

Because it is patently illegal for anyone to give you the disks for a windows operating system to load on these machines without removing them completely from personal machines. You have Microsoft and the Business Software Alliance to thank for that.

We have several Linux Pcommers that might could help you, and maybe someone who actually has windows disks they no longer use.

Sorry for that sad state of affairs. That's why many of us are fighting software patenting (although not copyright)

  6. Just a note... If you guys are going to start up a geek group, and then do the Linux thing too, you should read the LUG HOWTO at www.linux.org, and get all the freebies that go along with it.

Also, for you UNIX/Linux types, there is no Systems Administrators Guild chapters here in town. Anyone up for starting one?

  7. ince you are from the WC, how come you tell everyone to stay inside when a storm is coming, yet you send reporters directly into the path, to do live reports at the height of the storm?   Aren't you in fact encouraging others to go out?

Will it take one of your own to get impaled by a 2x4 or Stop sign, before you end this practice?

    Because :

    1) I am a computer guy and am nowhere near that silly

    and

    2) Jim Cantori is freaking nuts. :)

  8. AMEN!!!!!!

I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THAT POWER BILL.

good lord, folks... I've never even approached 150 bucks, and I have a two-story as well. Are you having outdoor hootnannnies with you supplying the air conditioning?

Seriously... Do you have the electronic thermostats and everything? I only have one air conditioner, but have an internal baffle system to switch off between upper and lower floors.
