  1. We have known the Parker family for years including his dad who used to walk everywhere he went in Dallas. Joe was a chip off the old block so to speak. If you ever needed to find out anything from the past in Paulding, Joe would help you find it. The new era will never be the same.

    Best regards to the family

  2. We shall forever be thankful that we have been friends to the Hardy family since we came to Paulding Co in 1959.

They were very helpful to us in getting established in Paulding. Judy we will miss seeing you at the Dallas parades. You were always so kind to invite us into your home. The Covington Family

  3. I respectably claim Vernell as one of my dearest and longest friends in Paulding County. She was one of the first people that I met when I came to Paulding Co for an interview to come to join two other Doctors. She gave me a tour of the new hospital and introduced me to some of the personnel. She was very professional and a down to earth type person, and I can truly say that she helped influence me to come and stay in this county. We spent many years working together making patient visits, delivering babies, assisting in surgery, and seeing patients in the emergency room.If I needed to know who certain people were I could count on her for the family history. I would like to say that I never heard her speak unkindly about anyone.

Vernell-you will be missed in this county, and your gain is our loss. You were a true friend, and I shall never forget you. May God bless you and your family.

  4. TO THE MELBA TWILLEY FAMILY;

IT IS AN HONOR AND PLEASURE FOR ME TO PAY A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO MELBA. I HAVE KNOW MELBA FOR OVER 50 YEARS AS A FRIEND, EMPLOYEE, AND FELLOW WORKER AT PAULDING MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. MOST RECENTLY SHE WAS INVALUABLE AS A MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE THAT HAS WORKED FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS CREATING A HISTORY OF THE HOSPITALS IN PAULDING COUNTY WHICH IS NOW ON DISPLAY IN THE LOWER LOBBY OF THE WELLSTAR PAULDING HOSPITAL. SHE CAN BE SEEN AND HEARD ON THE DVD THAT IS WITH THIS DISPLAY.

MELBA WAS ON THE FIRST HOSPITAL BOARD THAT WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN GETTING THE HILL-BURTON HOSPITAL THAT SO MANY OF US WORKED IN FOR MANY YEARS. I GUESS YOU COULD SAY THAT SHE WAS AT LEAST PARTIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR MY BEING HERE. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE NEW STATE OF THE ART HOSPITAL I WOULD NOT HAVE COME TO PAULDING COUNTY. AS AN EMPLOYEE SHE WAS EFFECIENT, DEPENDABLE, AND ALWAYS WILLING DAY OR NIGHT TO DO THE LABORATORY WORK NECESSARY FOR SURGERY AND DIAGNOSIS.

THANKS MELBA FOR BEING SUCH A FINE FRIEND, EMPLOYEE, AND BEAUTIFUL CARING LADY. REST IN PEACE

    JOHN M COVINGTON MD

  6. I HAVE KNOWN GLEN FOR ABOUT FIFTY YEARS, AND I AM PROUD TO COUNT HIM AS ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS. I KNEW HIM AS A MEMBER OF THE HOSPITAL AUTHORITY, AND I KNEW HIM AS A BUILDER. HE BUILT MY HOME IN DALLAS AS WELL AS THE HOMES OF DR BRALY AND DR WORTHY. YOU COULD DEPEND ON HIM TO DO THE JOB RIGHT. HE WAS A CHRISTIAN GENTLEMAN VERY ACTIVE IN THE SMYRNA METHODIST CHURCH AND MEN'S CLUB. I CAN ATTEST TO HIS HONESTY BY TELLING OF AN INCIDENT WHILE HE WAS BUILDING MY HOUSE. HE SUBMITTED A BILL EVERY SO OFTEN FOR THE WORK COMPLETED. ON ONE OCCASION HE HAD MADE AN ENTRY TWICE FOR THE SAME MATERIALS. HE FOUND THE MISTAKE BEFORE I DID. GLEN COULD HARDLY WAIT TO SEE ME AND CORRECT IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT A LARGE AMOUNT. HE WAS A PERFECTIONIST.

GLEN IS NOW RESTING IN PEACE AFTER MANY YEARS OF SUFFERING."WELL DONE MY FAITHFUL SERVENT"

MAY GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY

    DR JOHN

Seeing all these post today for the first time about the New Hope plane crash makes me wonder just what is being planned. Is there an ongoing planning for a thirty year reunion? If so, I could posssibly be of help. I am John M Covington MD one of the physicians that helped care for the injured. In fact I was the physician that attended Sandy Purl. I had not seen or heard from her since the accident until we had the twenteith reunion. The New York Times published a picture of Sandy and me embracing when we met at the reunion. I was selected to make a talk representing the hospital at the reunion. I believe I have a copy of that talk and the picture from the Times. I have an autographed copy of Sandy's book. I also have a book entitled Hail Fire by John Tielking.{A true story of a man who survived the crash}. He was at the last reunion.

Something of interest for all local citizens is the History of The Hospitals in Paulding Co. that a group of us 'oldtimers' is putting together. There will be a section on the part that the Paulding Memorial Hosp had during the disaster. All of this will be displayed in the lobby of the present Wellstar Hosp.

  8. This information is being provided by the Committee in support of the greenspace bond referendum. Other informative threads are ongoing but due to their length I chose to put this in a seperate thread.

Paulding Forest Wildlife Management Area (WMA)

    Q. Paulding Forest WMA currently is accessible for the public. Why do we need this bond referendum?

    A. Paulding Forest Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is currently under lease by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Covering more than 25,000 acres, it is one of the most popular state-operated WMA's in Georgia. However, many people do not realize that it does not have any permanent protection. While these agreements have been in place for more than a decade, they could be cancelled or not renewed at any time with 60 days notice. This is happening more and more across the state. Lands that are currently available to public access through temporary one year leases are being sold and lost to the public for recreation.

    Q. How will the money from this bond referendum be used?

    A. Funding from this bond referendum will be used to support the acquisition of 7,200 acres of Paulding Forest WMA currently under lease by DNR. It will be leveraged with funds from the State, federal grant programs, donations from conservation organizations, private foundations and other sources. The estimated cost of the total acquisition is $45 million, subject to an appraisal that meets federal standards. The U.S. Congress appropriated $250,000 in FY-06 for Paulding Forest through the Forest Legacy Program. The President's budget currently under consideration by Congress includes an additional $2.25 million Forest Legacy Program grant for this acquisition. It is expected this will be Georgia's number one priority for next year's Forest Legacy Program funding request.

    Q. Why is Paulding Forest WMA important?

    A. DNR recently recognized Paulding Forest as one of six priority areas for conservation in its first State Wildlife Action Plan. Georgia and other states were required to complete this plan to qualify for funding through the State Wildlife Grants Program. The State Wildlife Action Plan recognizes wildlife species of concern and their habitats, identifies threats to their future and requires the development of action plans to support their conservation.

    Q. Why does DNR have this property rated as a top priority for conservation?

    A. The 7,200-acre tract under consideration contains over 2.5 miles of streams including Raccoon Creek, a high priority waterway in the Etowah River basin that is recognized nationally for its water quality. It includes more than 900 acres of a very rare plant community known as montane longleaf pine, one of the few remnants of this ecosystem remaining in the country. Many rare, threatened or endangered wildlife and plant species also are found here, including the federally protected Cherokee darter, Etowah darter, amber darter and gray myotis and state protected greenbreast darter, bigeye chub and bay starvine. In addition, this property is one of the State's most popular destinations for hunters, anglers and other wildlife enthusiasts and borders on the Silver Comet Trail.

    Q. Will this land ever be resold?

    A. No. The property that the county purchases is encumbered by the actual language in the bond referendum. If you vote yes, the referendum specifically states that the funds will be for "...the purchase of land to be permanently protected for open space, wildlife management, and recreation areas . . ." The portion of the tract that the state purchases will be entered into the DNR Heritage Program - thereby protecting it from other uses on a permanent basis.

    Q. What does DNR and Paulding County plan to do with the property?

    A. The Wildlife Resources Division of DNR is charged with the protection, conservation and management of Georgia's wildlife and freshwater fisheries resources included protected and endangered wildlife and plants.

State and local ownership will provide permanent protection of this property for use by Georgia citizens for hunting, fishing, hiking, bird watching and many other outdoor activities consistent with a natural setting with few amenities. Plans are to maintain this property as Paulding Forest Wildlife Management Area. As long as the Jones Company is willing, the annual lease would continue as before on the adjoining Jones Company property.

State ownership will provide opportunities for active habitat management and restoration that aren't available under an actual lease agreement. A 50-year plan will be developed for the state property that will provide broad objectives for long-term management. Paulding County will make sure that their portion of the tract is available for camping, fishing, hunting and hiking - this land will be available for all to enjoy!

    Q. What is my stake in this property if I don't hunt or fish?

    A. This property will be a Wildlife Management Area which will provide many opportunities for camping, hiking, bird-watching, solitude and other non-consumptive uses that are compatible with management objectives for the property. State and local ownership will permanently protect this property for the enjoyment of generations of Georgians. In addition, this property will provide water quality protection for one of Georgia's most southern trout streams and will provide habitat for not only common wildlife, but several rare, threatened and endangered species. Protecting a large tract of undeveloped land will add to the quality of life for Paulding County residents.

    Q. What is the cost to the local taxpayer?

    A. Voter approval of the bond referendum will allow the County to issue $15,230,000 in General Obligation Bonds, the proceeds of which will be used to purchase Paulding's 1/3 share of the Paulding Forest WMA property. The associated tax rate increase would be less than three-tenths (3/10) of a mill, or $23.40 per year on a $200,000 house with a standard homestead exemption.

  9. I had a great meeting with Jerry Shearin and really felt like he answered all our questions as best he could. Some questions that were asked he had not even contemplated yet and he said so,and some questions couldn't be answered until the bond passes, which hopefully it will.

Now for the questions and answers.

Q:Would it be possible to buy all the property that is currently leased by the DNR outside of the proposal?

A:Not likely-We could never get that land for the price we are getting in the proposed tract.

Q:Is Paulding buying that tract of land that lies in Polk County

A:No,the state and Polk county are buying that

Q:Will 4 wheeling be allowed,or motorized offroad trails or horse trails.

    A:The DNR will decide.

my opinion:ATV's will not be allowed on property, but horse riding, historically has always been allowed outside of hunting seasons.

Q:Will the timber be havested off this site

    A:yes

Q:Will this be the same as Red Top Mountain?

    A:No

Q:Has there been a committee formed, that will actively support this bond,if so who is on this committee.

A:Yes,Kevin Kirby has my # and is suppossed to call, but as I'm going back on shift tonight,I don't know if I will get the chance to talk with him.

Q:What is the exact cost on a $200,000 home?and how long will the bond be issued for?

A:App.$25 a year but it will decrease as the tax digest grows. It is a 15 year bond.

Q:Will this be ran by the state

A:DNR will run it with help form the Ga. Forestry Commission

Q:will the county own all 7000 acres

A:No,The county is buying the southern third, all that property south of silver comet trail to 278.

Q:Is this just for Paulding County Residents or can anyone use this area

A:Anyone, but if you hunt on this property you still must have a wma stamp

Q:Who will maintain and run this property

A:DNR with help from Ga. Forestry

Q:Has the state and federal Government already raised their portion of the money

A:Federal-yes,state-no,state is waiting to see if bond passes

Q:What group will have ultimate control over the property?

    A:DNR

Q:who will have day to day control.

    A:DNR

Q:who will be the registered owners

    A:Paulding Counti 1/3,State 1/3,Feds-1/3

Q:If a WMA lease is done, how long will it be and will it cover the entire property

    A:year to year lease,yes

Q:Is the current timber included in the purchase

    A:yes

Q:What percentage will be logged between now and transfer of ownership?

Will ther be any written controls on how eco friendly this looging must be?

What wiil be the required condition of the land when the sale is made?

A:These are some things that have not been contemplated, but I can tell you there will be some cutting and burning to restore the native Longleaf Pine Tree.

My opinion-Longleaf pines are good, the red cockaded woodpeckers nests in these trees, and if there is established a colony of these woodpeckers,no development will be allowed to disturb them. This is going on right now on Sheffield WMA.

Q:What document will control the future of the property.

A:The ballot language and deed restrictions(there will be a copy of the ballot at the end of this post)

Q:Could this property ever be sold by the county at a later date to private interests.

    A:No

Q:Will sub-leases to private organizations, such as hunt clubs be allowed

    A:No

Q:once the purchase bonds are paid off, what will happen to the income from the property?what fund will it go into?

A:The small amount that can be made from timber will be put right back into the property.Remember once the pulp wood is gone,Longleaf pines will be restored.

Q:Who will control the timber harves

    A:Ga.Forestry Commission

Q:Will bidding be done to make sure county is getting top dollar for the timber

    A:yes

Q:who will control the bidding process.

    A:don't know

Q:Will the bidding records be open to the public for review

    A:yes

Q:Can the documentation be arranged such that if any portion of the land is sold, all proceeds must be used for a property tax rebate in the county since the taxpayers are paying for it

A:Property can't be sold, but yes,the bond covenant states that all money will go back to the taxpayers

Q:What development will be allowed?i.e. will campgrounds be allowed such as around Lake Allatoona be done?Archery club be allowed to set up an archery range, concrete trails suc as silver comet spur, only walking trails.

What is the balance planned between recreation and wildlife.

A:The Chairman really wants to see a campground built, but just as the other stuff he said a legal opinion would be needed by an attourney on what can be disturbed in the greenspace.

MY opinion-While a maneged deer hunt is in process,no other activities will be allowed on the property. There are only 2 maneged hunts per year, that last 4 days each,1 is in November and 1 in december.

    Ballot

Now if y'all have anyother questions about anything, make an appointment to meet with Jerry,he's very open and really easy to talk with. All these questions could have been dealt with in 30 mins. but we talked for 2 hours about deer hunting and such.

  11. Yes, this is my Daddy. :(

EARLY THIS YEAR I WOULD SEE DOUG AND GLEN WALKING ON THE SILVER COMET TRAIL. ON ONE OCCASION WE TALKED ABOUT THE PAST. THEY REMINDED ME THAT I DELIVERED VALERIE. I TOLD THEM THAT I REMEMBERED DOING A TONSILLECTOMY AND ADENOIDECTOMY ON ONE OF THE GIRLS. WE HAD TROUBLE WITH EXCESS BLEEDING OF THE ADENOIDS. WE NEEDED TO GIVE HER A TRANSFUSION. IT WAS AT NIGHT-SHE WAS TYPE-A, AND SO WAS I. I HAD MY LAB TECH TO TAKE A PINT OF BLOOD FROM ME. WE GAVE IT TOO HER. THE BLEEDING SOON STOPPED.

I AM SO SORRY THAT I DID NOT HAVE A CHANCE TO VISIT OR ATTEND THE FUNERAL. MY PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES GOES OUT FOR THE PARIS FAMILY THAT I HAVE KNOWN SO LONG AS PATIENTS AND FRIENDS.

    DR. JOHN

  12. Rev. W. F. "Bill" Byrd, author of the book on Paulding entitled "Reflections", a retired Methodist minister, WWII Veteran, a local businessman and a long time supporter and director of the Paulding County Historical Society died suddenly Sunday during services at the Dallas First United Methodist Church. Byrd was 83, born on January 12, 1922 in Paulding.

Rev. Byrd is at Benson Funeral Home and visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday nights 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and the funeral will be Thursday at Dallas First United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. Internment will be at the Dallas City Cemetery with the Rev. Dick Harris presiding.

CAN YOU THINK OF A BETTER PLACE TO DIE? HE WAS SITTING IN HIS USUAL PEW BUT FAILED TO STAND FOR THE OPENING SONG. DR RAY CALLED FOR ME, AND I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN CPR BEING ASSISTED BY RN WIFE AND SOME OTHER MEMBERS. WE WERE ABLE TO KEEP HIM ALIVE UNTIL THE MEDICS ARRIVED. HE EITHER DIED ON HIS WAY TO THE HOSPITAL OR SHORTLY AFTER ARRIVING.

I HAVE KNOWN REV BYRD FOR YEARS AS A FRIEND AND DEVOUT CHRISTIAN!!

  13. I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT THE CIVIL WAR BATTLES AT DALLAS, NEW HOPE, AND PICKETTS MILL. THIS IS MOST INTERESTING TO ME BECAUSE I HAVE A DIARY WRITTEN BY AN IOWA SOLDIER WHO WAS A BROTHER-IN-LAW OF MY GRANDFATHER WHO WAS ALSO IN THE BATTLES. COMPARING THE DIARY TO THE NOTES FROM THE CWPT IS MOST INTERESTING. THE DAILY DIARY IS FROM MAY 1, 1864 TILL JAN 1, 1865.

  14. Hey Dr. Covington!!!!!

I just found out you are a member here at P.com.

Good to see you here Sir. You must start posting more.

You were my familys' physician, along with DR. Worthy for as long as I can remember (I have a couple of scars to prove it:) ) up until just before you retired.

My son had a medical condition when he was an infant. I took him to his pediatrician who recommended surgery "immediately" and gave me the number of a specialist. As a new mom, I was scared to death.

After making the appointment, several family members told me to take him to you for a second opinion.

I did and you gave me some very good medical advice and set my fears to rest. You didn't recommend surgery for at least 2 years to see if the problem would take care of itself and if not, THEN surgery would be considered. He did end up having the surgery  2 years later, and everything worked out great.

I dont believe I ever thanked you for that.

        Thank You!
