  1. showed up at hiram community ctr this morning @ 11:30, to a line of about 50 folks outside . At about 12:00, I had moved up maybe 10 positions, when they announced that the computer system was down (apparently state wide). We were told that this had been happening sporadically, but they should be back up within 15 minutes or so. Fast forward one hour - still no computer systems. I had an appt, so I had to leave.

    Came back at about 2:45, longer line, but it wasnt the same people - so figured I'd wait in the windy cold again.

    10 minutes later, someone came out and told us computer systems down again, so I left.

  2. I've often wondered about the legality of turning right on red onto the side street - followed by a u-turn, then another right onto 278 to bypass the light. It seems once you are in the red light "cycle", you will catch them all. If you get lucky and get through one green, you make it through most of them. I seem to recall being told a long time ago that it was not allowed, but I've been looking for the specific laws that prohibit it without much luck.

    I'm referring to morning commuter traffic - not busy shopping hours.

    Here is the pertinent GA code on uturns and right turn on red.

    Assuming there is no posted sign prohibiting uturn, no traffic congestion, and there is a clear line of sight... would I get a blue light greeting?

    TITLE 40. MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC

    CHAPTER 6. UNIFORM RULES OF THE ROAD

    ARTICLE 6. TURNING, STARTING, SIGNALING

    O.C.G.A. § 40-6-121 (2007)

    § 40-6-121. U-turns

    No vehicle shall be turned so as to proceed in the opposite direction:

    (1) Upon any curve;

    (2) Upon the approach to or near the crest of a grade where such vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching from either direction;

    (3) Where such turn cannot be made in safety and without interfering with other traffic; or

    (4) Where a prohibition is posted.

    TITLE 40. MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC

    CHAPTER 6. UNIFORM RULES OF THE ROAD

    ARTICLE 2. TRAFFIC SIGNS, SIGNALS, AND MARKINGS

    O.C.G.A. § 40-6-21 (2007)

    § 40-6-21. Meaning of traffic signals

    (a) The following meanings shall be given to highway traffic signal indications, except those on pedestrian signals:

    (3) Steady red indications shall have the following meanings:

    (A) Traffic, except pedestrians, facing a steady CIRCULAR RED signal alone shall stop at a clearly marked stop line or, if there is no stop line, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if there is no crosswalk, before entering the intersection, and shall remain standing until an indication to proceed is shown, except as provided in subparagraphs (B), ©, and (D) of this paragraph;

    (B) Vehicular traffic facing a steady CIRCULAR RED signal may cautiously enter the intersection to make a right turn after stopping as provided in subparagraph (A) of this paragraph. Such vehicular traffic shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching and is within one lane of the half of the roadway on which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning. For the purposes of this subparagraph, "half of the roadway" means all traffic lanes carrying traffic in one direction of travel. Vehicular traffic shall yield the right of way to other traffic lawfully using the intersection;

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    This last one might be the caveot. I suppose it could be construed that by performing the right, U, right maneuver that you are in effect disobeying the traffic control device. Technically you would be in accordance with the law with each specific maneuver, but as a whole - you have bypassed the signal.

A violation of this subsection shall be a misdemeanor, except as otherwise provided by subsection (f) of this Code section.

    thoughts?

    I'm not an aggressive driver (most of the time) - and the intention is not to blow by everyone. The idea is to get out of the red light "cycle", which could easily shave 10-15 minutes off my morning drive to I-20.

  3. The corollary doesn't exist until the Bill passes & the stage is set.

    Not discounting your argument . . . I'm saying that the increased risk is not worth the solution being proposed.

    This is a political maneuver for votes . . . it is a solution looking for a problem. The argument sounds good & it'll get votes . . . but what problem is it solving? And is the increased risk worth it?

    What political maneuver is not for votes? The delegates have proposed a measure that has been requested by many of their constituents.

    The problem being solved is eliminating one more place where the safety of my family may be in the hands of a person that has already chosen to break the law.

    So what is the basis for the assumed increased risk? Just because more guns are around? Since this bill has not passed, we can only look to other legal carry establishments for comparison. Even though the incident rate was low, we have shown examples where the new bill could prevent violent attacks. I am not personally aware of any incidents where other legal carrying civilians have erupted in gunfire due to an unidentified or misidentified criminal. Could you cite any incidents where this was the case (again, using establishments where carry is already legal since the church bill has not passed - I can think of no reason why the behavior would be different in church)? If you can - It will not change my personal opinion, but may give some weight to your argument. Without examples, it seems like a purely imaginative scenario, based on a preconceived notion that those carrying would not have the self control to refrain from a bullet exchange with anything that moved.

  4. Wouldn't it be better to hire a security detail if a church felt endangered?

    I wonder which of those churches felt endangered prior to the incidents.

    I will concede that armed security detail at each of the ~4.5 million services could have prevented some of the attacks. Perhaps a little inefficient, considering that properly licensed, responsible, concealed carry civilians could perform the same task. Heck - maybe we should all have armed security following each of us everywhere - and we wouldn't need to carry at all.

    You never know when and where that .0000084 incidence rate is going to hit. The corollary to your incident rate is that should also be the same frequency of the imagined shoot out scenarios.

  5. Middletown, New York, 2007

    John Michael Petry attempted to rape and sexually abuse an unidentified 58-year-old woman who was praying early Wednesday at the chapel of St. Joseph's Church. She fought him off by stabbing him in the neck with a pen she was using to write in her journal.

    Glad she got away - Just think what would happen if everyone started carrying pens to church :p Maybe that's the solution. Of course, the illiterate folks untrained in penmanship might put everyone at risk - ink flying everywhere...the mayhem B)

  6. Here's a list of church incidents that has been compiled from georgiapacking.org. I'm sure all of the criminal shooters here seriously considered whether it was legal to bring the gun to church before deciding on their actions. Had there been armed congregation members, some of these incidents might have turned out differently.

  7. Churches should be able to dictate whether or not weapons can be on their property at all.

    The point is that if there is a proliferation of weapons at church, the more likely something bad is going to happen. Same anywhere, for that matter. But this topic is about churches only, particularly since there are a lot of kids there. The risk is too great.

    And there we have it - I am in COMPLETE agreement. A property owner should have complete say over what takes place, but it is not the governments place to mandate what the property owner can and cannot do.

    edit: beat me to it Guard Dad...

  8. One more time: until THIS BILL IS INACTED, the situation cannot be shown because the state is NOT SET for it to happen. It wouldn't matter if it is in a church or otherwise: this bill includes churches with many other places.

    Not a good idea for there to me more people armed in more places as the higher the risk something is going to happen.

    Once it gets easier to carry a weapon to church, there will be more weapons in church.

    As BlackSheep asked - why aren't we seeing the wild west shoot 'em up at all of the other legal places that a permit holder can legally carry concealed? No Bill needs enactment, as there are many places where one can ALREADY legally carry. What other places do you feel the government should be able to bar guns from for us untrained, half witted, RAMBO wannabe, trigger happy, can't hit the side of a barn civilians? Is it something specific to Church that bothers you? Am I less entitled to protect My Family and Myself at Church than say, Kroger?

  9. ooh ooh we are neighbors---how cool, we too in bent creek -heres a hint, i have my lights up already, so that narrows it down for you.....

    /wave - another bent creeker here.

    My wife has some connections that work for a multi-utility call center. They were able to track down someone w/ Paulding County water, and were advised that they expect water service restored in the next hour or so. fingers crossed :unsure:

  10. Discount Tire ended up cross-threading one of my lugs when putting on a tire. Took them an hour of impact wrenching and cutting before they could finally cut the stud off. Had to take car to dealership to have stud replaced, where they found the hole in the hub where the stud would go had been reamed out so that it would not accept another. Ultimately needed a new hub and wheel bearing to the tune of ~$500. To Discount Tire's credit, they did pick up the tab.

    Overall, it was inconvenient, but they came through in the end. I have always praised them in the past for offering free flat patch/repairs, even if you didn't buy tires from them. I would probably go again, but remind them not to start lugnuts with an impact wrench.

  11. Did anyone confirm if there's one in Paulding open to the public?

    Paulding County Shooting Range

    1468 Grants Chapel Rd.

    Dallas, GA 30132

    678-363-3075

    Ugadawgs98 confirmed that this was for Law Enforcement, and not open to the public :( I knew the Sherrif's Dept had their training area up adjacent to the dump, but wasn't sure if this was the same.

  12. Hubby and I go to a place out on Bankhead Hwy,somewhere between hwy 92 and hwy 5.it's usually empty so we get it to ourselves.

    Sounds like the old wolf creek/tactical concepts. I used to go there when I lived in douglasville, but they closed right when I moved to Paulding. Didn't know if they were still around. May check them out again. i just hate having to pay $10 an hour to shoot at paper targets - Would love to find somewhere to plink cans or something more tactile.

    I think the Mirror Lake development was built over the place I mentioned off 61.

  13. Ran across this post - http://www.paulding.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=112107 . I wasn't aware of a range in Paulding, and am excited if this is actually open to public (and allow handguns). Can anyone confirm?

    Googled and found this http://yellowpages.aol.com/business/pauldi...ga/0,113972846/

    Had been going to Hotshots @ Austell/WindyHill ,but it's a little pricey. I did go once to an outside range down some side-road off 61 headed towards Villa Rica, but forgot the name and where exactly it was.

    Where do other P'Commers go for target practice?

  14. Wife and I ate at Erins several times for breakfast - good food, decent prices, NO wait.

    Unfortunately, that last attribute was probably their ultimate downfall. Any time we were there, I never counted more than two other groups in the restaurant. Wish they would have made it....

  15. As this VOTE WAS DENIED for PRD, it does not mean there won't be development which none of us disagree with, but do disagree with the PRD density factor (

    I just hope we don't end up in a worse scenario (as the Chairman pointed out) with a clear cut R2 "just enough to comply" development. I'm not in favor of the high density that generally comes to mind with a PRD, but can't help but think we might be better served with a development that makes some effort (albeit only to comply with regulations) to beautify the project and provide better infrastructure.

  16. Vote was Denied - based on not being able to provide sewer access - Quote from Pubby touched on this possibility earlier in the thread.

    Second, you may choose to fight or not fight it, but the county has a monopoly over the extension of sewerage in the county and while they may be compelled to do the zoning; they may, for instance, decline from exercising imminent domain, to expand the sewerage infrastructure for a development and effectively stop it that way. Notably, they may not wish to do so, but certainly the rules regarding extension of sewerage provide, at least in some circumstances, a way to slow, control or stop growth altogether.
