  6. Commission tables vote on courthouse complex

It was on the agenda and it was supposed to happen but the absence of the Chairman and post commissioner Don Powell was too much for the three remaining commissioners and BOC tabled the vote.

While the vote is near certain, Acting Chairman Hal Echols said a vote of this significance needed to have votes from all members. That time will come decided at the next meeting, February 13, 2007.

Without elaborating who, Echols explained that one commissioner was ill and the other commissioner had a prior commitment.

Following are a few of viginettes from Tuesdays county action.

DA Drew Lane advocates for the new Courthouse-Government Complex during the 10:00 am meeting of the BOC. He spoke of the lack of much needed space at the current courthouse requiring several of his staff to share office space with the Airport Authority in a nearby office park. He also stated that without an adequate mediation area the court is now backlogged with 3000 + civil cases causing the judges great concern. Lack of parking in the area as well as limited to no expansion capabilities were also discussed as justification for the new facility.

A Letter to the Parents of East Paulding High School

    DATE POSTED: January 23rd, 2007

To The Parents of East Paulding High School:

This letter is to address any safety concerns you may have regarding your child. On Monday, January 22, 2007, a concern was brought to school administration regarding graffiti on the wall in several locations of the building. Rumors were circulating throughout the school of gangs and potential violence. The administration has investigated all allegations and substantiated the fact that these were just rumors.

Due to the unrest of the student body, a staff meeting was held on Monday, January 22nd, to make the staff aware of student concerns and to elevate teacher’s awareness in the building. Additional Resource Officers and Central Office Staff were also on campus. Today, the school operated under normal daily conditions. Unfortunately, many false statements have spread throughout the school and community through internet logs and cell phones. The administration has been proactive in our approach to ensure your child has a safe learning environment at EPHS.

We will continue to address any issues that may arise. Please talk to your child about any concerns he/she may have regarding safety issues at EPHS. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact the administration at 770-445-5100.

The attention of the BOC and audience was focused on Gary Ratel, an architect with "The Facility Group" when he presented his design for the new Goverment Complex which includes a courthouse and administration building. Mr. Ratel stated that security, public safety and assessability were major factors taken into consideration when designing the new building. This new complex will utilize 21st century architecture with a design flare towards the historic court house currently located in Dallas Square. Ample parking will also be available with the current design plans calling for 1000 parking spaces.

The approximate cost of this new complex has yet to be determined. The group hopes to have that information in approximately 4 to 5 weeks. A competitive bidding process is planned for the construction.
