Recommended Posts

Lucille Eugenia Abernathy Walton, 90, of Hiram, died peacefully at home on July 15, 2013. Lucille was the youngest of the eleven children of Felix and Menarkie Abernathy, and at her passing was the last surviving of those eleven children.

Lucille was born March 22, 1923 in Acworth, Georgia. Her grandfather was a Baptist minister, her father a farmer and her mother a homemaker. She attended school in Hiram, and in 1941 married her high-school sweetheart, Wendall B. Walton. They made their home briefly in Atlanta, and then, after Wendall was discharged from wartime service in the Army Air Corps in 1945, they lived first in Hiram and then in East Point, Georgia.

Lucille was a homemaker as well as an active member of First Methodist Church and St. Mathew United Methodist Church in East Point, and worked for George Muse & Co., in Atlanta. In 1978, she and Wendall built their last home on family land in Paulding County, where they lived among other family members, and returned to Bethel United Methodist Church, where Lucille (and Wendall) sang in the choir and became active in the church. She devoted much of her life to her grandchildren.

Lucille always made Christmas and Easter dinners for the family, and was the perfect hostess for any occasion.

Lucille is survived by her husband of 72 years, Wendall B. Walton, Sr., two daughters, Karen Taylor (Kendall), Teresa Donovan (Dick), two sons, Wendall B. "Bart" Walton, Jr., (Tina), and Keith Walton (Shirley) and ten grandchildren: Brian Taylor, Brett Taylor, Darren Foley, Jason Foley, Brandon Graves, Tyler Walton, Kyle Walton, Jeremy Walton, Shane Walton and Lori Walton, and thirteen great-grandchildren: Jake, Lorin Kay, Logan, and Hannah Taylor, Keegan, Fiona Lucille and Sophia Graves, Katelyn and Kailey Walton, Aidan Foley, and Hailey, Hunter and Maisy Walton, and many nieces and nephews.

Lucille was a dedicated Christian, a loving wife and mother, a charming and loving mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother, dearly loved, respected and admired by all who knew her. Her gentle spirit and pretty smile was a delight.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests your donation to Bethel United Methodist Church's music fund.
