bensonfh Posted September 8, 2012 Report Share Posted September 8, 2012 Mr. Jesse Collins Hitchcock passed away in the evening of September 6, at his home in Hiram, Ga. He was 87 years old. He was born and raised in Hiram, Ga. where he married Laurene Shipp Hitchcock. They were married for 59 years before her passing in 2006. He is survived by: Sons, Lance Hitchcock of Hiram, Ga. and Danny and Andrea Hitchcock of Rex, Ga.; Grandsons, Brian Hitchcock of Douglasville, Ga. and Brett Hitchcock of Panama City, Florida; Great Grandchildren, Ava and Collins Hitchcock; 4 Sisters, Edna Neely of Bartow, Ga., Rita Brown of Draketown, Ga., Mary Dean Mitchell of Hiram, Ga. and Margie Hulsey of Atlanta. Collins served in the Army during WWII and spent two and one-half years fighting in the South Pacific. He was wounded in Luzon, Philippines and had malaria twice. He was a 19 year old Sargent who miraculously survived fighting even though 90% of the men in his company were killed or wounded. He received numerous declarations including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Collins worked for 42 years at Norfolk Southern railroad, mostly at Inman Yards. He was known throughout the system and even 25 years after retirement is remembered as the hardest working, kindest and funniest man on the railroad. All who knew him love and respected him and will deeply miss his charming and mischievous ways. The world is a lesser place without him. Visitation will be Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Benson Funeral Home from 4:00-8:00 P.M. in Dallas, Ga. Services will be held Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. from the West Metro Church of Christ in Hiram, Ga. Burial will follow at New Harmony Baptist Church in Hiram. Pallbearers will be Brian Hitchcock, Brett Hitchcock, Eddie Sexton, Ricky Sexton, Steve Eberhart, Joey Shipp, Jack Mitchell and Charles Douglas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Clemmons Strickland, Dwight Tibbets, Bill Watson and the “Breakfast Club” at Martins Restaurant in Hiram, Ga.
