OK, the Bee Traps were a HUGE success, and I hope they continue to be. Ours are getting more and more bees in them and we are seeing fewer and fewer bees flying around everyday. Used to could go out and get 10-12 in 5 minutes with the badminton rackets. Now you have to wait 15 minutes to get a shot at 1.

 

I am getting ready to do 4 large colony bat houses. These will meet the requirements of certification by the Bat Conservation groups. They are large....30" tall, 18" wide, 5" deep, but will attract and can accommodate about 250 bats. They will cost $125 to $150.

 

And I plan to do some small ones as well, but from all I have researched, the small ones with 1 chamber, 18" tall and 12" wide will only attract single males.

 

We are also doing some bluebird/swallow houses. An industrial version, plain and simple, and a decorated version with cedar shakes, decorations such as faux windows etc. These also will be built per the Bird Conservatory Groups reccomendations with all the bells and whistles they require. $25 to $50 depending on how fancy.

 

Garden work benches.....not the Big Lots variety, but something that will last free standing outside for 10-20 years, with a covered storage shelf on top of the back and a plastic top with square holes for the dirt to fall though into plastic collection boxes so it can be dumped into a potting soil container like a trash can. These are heavy....150 to 200 pounds. All pressure treated, cedar and plastics. $150 to $200 depending on bells and whistles.

We have been impressed, as we have a large 36' x 10' covered front porch, primarily cedar, and an open carport with pine rafters. They have been eating at both for years and we even had the house treated 2 years and have killed many, many with badminton rackets only to see them come back stronger and in larger numbers.

 

This year since they first came out last month, we have seen a drastic reduction in the number of bees.
