Harbor Bay Landscaping
Here are some easy ways to keep your roses healthy and producing beautiful flowers year after year: - Plant garlic or marigolds next to rose bushes to keep insects off of the rose. - Use phosphate-rich fertilizer in Spring and midsummer. - Prune roses in the Spring before new leaves appear. Cut stems 1 inch below weak, diseases or dead areas. - Weed the area around roses to decrease insect problems. - To prevent black spot infection (spots on leaves that kill them), spray the entire bush with 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of corn oil and 2 quarts of water. - Fertilize with organic ingredients–especially bananas and banana peals that give roses potassium to help them thrive. - Make sure your roses are getting at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. - If you have alkaline soil, periodically pour a small amount of vinigar around the base of the rose to help it absorb nutrients. Now that you have beautiful roses, don’t forget to stop and smell them!
SOTDOC
I've never heard of planting garlic or marigolds with the roses. I'll have to try that. Thanks!
MarkPalm
These are great tips. Thanks. Now if I can just find more Patsy Cline roses to plant (mine only survived three seasons) I'll definitely take this advice.
