  1. Call the Dallas PD and ask. I guess it's possible that the people who run the farmers' market have gotten some kind of limited permit to block the street for a few hours every Saturday for the duration of the market - you won't know until you ask the entity that *would* know.
  2. First of all, you should decide how much you (and your daughter, if she's contributing) want to spend. That will set the stage for everything else you do. Next, decide order of importance - what percentage of your budget do you want to devote to the reception? the photographer? the florist? All of this should be decided before you sit down with *any* of your vendors. Check the contract you have with your venue - they may have some limitations on what you can do and who you can hire. A fair number of event locations require that you use *their* caterer, which can solve that issue -
  3. Same here - I tried to vote yesterday and today, but the vote total doesn't change.
  4. Every time a story like this hits the news, I think of how skewed our values are regarding jobs and their corresponding dollar value. So many people bitch and moan about how high our taxes are, yet law enforcement officers and other first responders are paid from tax dollars. I've seen people on this very board groan about the high cost of daycare, but they are giving over THEIR CHILDREN to the care of the employees of that daycare. Conversely, we see stories about professional athletes and actors who are paid *millions* of dollars a year or for a single movie, and we don't bat an eye.
  5. Just wondering: do you impose those same standards on yourself with your own kids?
  6. How does a parent forget his/her OWN child in a car??? Yet we hear of that several times a year. It only takes one lapse of memory and/or judgment to cause a terrible accident.
  7. I find it interesting that you mentioned some of the more 'gentrified' sections of Atlanta. Are you just as willing to hang out on MLK or on the Bankhead Hwy. corridor?
  8. That would take up a LOT of their space, though - you'd definitely want to call and reserve for that many folks.
  9. From the PCHS website: I don't see anything in this that says children may not have access to needed medications while at school - it just says they can't bring it themselves and they may not carry it on them (with documented exceptions). I haven't heard of any instances where a child was expelled for having medications **IF HE/SHE FOLLOWED THE RULES**. As far as alert bracelets go, there are many different styles available these days - they don't necessarily scream 'weak and vulnerable.'
  10. I'm afraid you missed my point. There are too many kids now who would take or play with ANOTHER CHILD'S meds with no thought of the ramifications to others or themselves. That's why I think it's dangerous to allow children to carry their meds while they're at school. Children who need drugs at certain times should be allowed to go wherever the meds are kept for them at whatever time those meds need to be taken. Children who have a condition that might require unscheduled, emergency dosing should wear a medical alert bracelet and their teachers should be notified of their potential need. I
  11. In principle, I agree with you. My husband and one of my cousins have been insulin-dependent diabetics since they were children. My own condition - which is occasionally seen in children - requires use of an electronic nebulizer four times a day, so I fully understand the need for medications during school hours. In a more disciplined society, I would completely support children carrying and taking their own required drugs, provided they were of an age to understand the correct dosage and/or use any equipment properly. *However*, we do NOT live in a disciplined society any longer. When
  12. I'm in favor of zero tolerance as long as common sense is applied. A real gun is a real gun is a real gun. A *drawing* of a gun is just that: a DRAWING that is going to administer a paper cut at worst. I'm against allowing school administrators to set their own parameters because although they might make their decisions with the best intentions in the world, it's completely unfair, for instance, for kids at one school to be permitted to carry meds with them while at another school that would get them ISS. As with so many other problems in education, maybe if *parents* would be more w
  13. I voted for you - good luck!
  14. Dr. Leila Denmark has been writing about the non-necessity of cows' milk for years. Her book, 'Every Child Should Have a Chance,' is one every mother-to-be should read. BTW, Dr. Denmark celebrated her 113th birthday a few months ago - good fortune and good genes aside, I suspect she knows something about healthy living!
  15. Wow. The Paulding powers-that-be are really selling the shelter down the river. Those poor animals.
  16. IMO, the defense has already concluded that Casey Anthony will be convicted. At this point, they're trying to keep her from getting the needle (or whatever form of execution FL uses) by forcing the prosecution's medical witnesses to concede that malice murder cannot be proven.
  17. YiaYia is my newest heroine. In fact, I'm using one of her pics as my FB profile photo.
  18. Seems to me as if that would make shopping *easier*, not harder. Why would you want to walk all over the store hunting for specialized items when it's not necessary?
  19. They're not in Paulding, but I love Three-13 on Canton Road in Marietta. A little pricey, but *totally* worth it!
  20. That's why one of my proudest accomplishments is getting through 25 years in the D/L office without committing a felony.
  21. IMO, mixing business with family is hardly ever a good idea. Let the grandfather keep the junker van, get your daughter a car elsewhere and have it checked out by a mechanic you trust before you sign on the dotted line. IF you decide to fight for the van instead, why not let your *daughter* do the fighting? If she's old enough to have an eight-year-old, she's old enough to fight her own battles.
  22. I hope that her father and his wife will sit down with her - as I hope they did with the other kids - and have a long talk about how things will change and *won't* change. Your daughter's best reassurance will come once the divorce is final and she sees that she is still loved by her former stepmother and the 'siblings-by-marriage.' For your child's sake, I hope that happens.
  23. If I had a nickel for every time I saw the word 'trashy' in the Hiram WalMart thread, I think I could pay my electric bill this month. But I'm curious: what do y'all consider 'trashy?' I may even fit that description to some of you ... I rarely wear makeup these days, my haircut could probably stand a trim, I'm almost always in jeans and a t-shirt, and the last time I had a manicure was when I got married 19 years ago. *However*, I'm always clean, I wear deodorant and a bra, don't curse in public and I try to remember to smile at and thank the cashier, whether he/she smiles at/
  24. There's another flyover that takes you from the Douglas/Paulding line to Nebo - you just have to click on the Paulding County link to see it. As far as I can tell *and* if the simulation is correct, nearly all the widening will be taken from the western side of the road. Does anyone know if this is true or is it just poetic license on the part of the people who designed the simulation?
