  1. I'm tempted to come back in May and see if Phil Phillips is in the final, because he's the only one who impressed me even a little bit. I know a lot of these chilluns are on their way to the ENT if they don't figure out how to sing correctly *soon*.
  2. Sounds like a plan. I hope you have perfect weather for it and the day of your dreams!
  3. Remember, the mayoral election is a *special* election due to the resignation of the previous mayor. The city PTB probably just seized upon the opportunity of scheduling this election to coincide with the primary, guessing they'd get more interest and participation than in a stand-alone election. Makes sense to me.
  4. Are you talking about state disability? I think the OP was referring to SS disability, which is a different critter altogether.
  5. You moved here from New York, I believe. Proportionately, and looking at U.S. representatives only, GA is no more a 'one-party state' than NY. GA has 13 Congressional districts; eight of those are represented by Republicans, while five are represented by Democrats. NY has 29 Congressional districts; twenty-one are represented by Democrats and eight are represented by Republicans. In my observation, sometimes one's perception of a situation is colored by whether one seems to be of the majority or the minority point of view.
  6. Some people just don't have that level of self-control.
  7. You may want to send him a PM, too. I *think* someone offered Mrs. Surepip one for free, but I don't know if she got it or not.
  8. This was originally posted in early December. We need an update.
  9. Yep, I'll be voting sometime next week, since lines are harder for me than they once were. Not tickled about my choices, though.
  10. Are you her wedding planner? If so, I'd be concerned about the lack of cleanliness that Papi mentioned, and maybe how to handle the crowd flow since there are apparently several smallish rooms instead of one or two large ones. I'd also be thinking about where guests are going to park, unless the bride is prepared to provide a shuttle bus from a remote parking lot to the venue.
  11. I was under the impression that the bride has already *booked* the Stanley House and that other venues aren't really an option. Is that true?
  12. Good morning, all. Many of you have read or heard the following before, but I hope you'll bear with me as I share this with those who have not. Seventeen years ago today, I drove my handsome husband to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Unlike most unplanned trips to the hospital, this was an occasion that blended tension and uncertainty with happiness and great hopes for the future. He was on his way there because we had gotten "the call." Evan had been on peritoneal dialysis for about a year and a half, thanks to diabetes-induced renal failure. He was on Social Security disabilit
  13. My response has zip to do with comparing the death of Whitney Houston to the deaths of American soldiers. Even if we had NO soldiers engaged in conflicts around the world, it wouldn't make Whitney any more deserving of such an honor. For me, lowering flags to half-staff should be reserved for those who have served their *country* with HONOR and distinction and personal sacrifice. Singing the 'Star Spangled Banner' doesn't meet that burden, IMO.
  14. From the DDS website: If this girl was indeed a minor, her parents *do* have a say in whether or not she keeps her license. Again, from the DDS website:
  15. I just finished 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett and just started 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry.
  16. Nooooo ... my point *is* that he could have had that heart attack ANYWHERE. It made the news because he was in a place that uses its unhealthy menu as a selling point - the irony of the story was just too delicious (no pun intended) to pass up.
  17. I blended angel food and spice cake mixes and it worked like a charm. I'll double it next time, though.
  18. Eh. Could have just as easily happened to him in a vegan joint.
  19. I'm gonna try this sometime with angel food and spice cake mixes (not crazy about chocolate) - thanks for the idea. (Not tonight, though - I have a totally sinful Napoleon from Douceur de France in the fridge!)

    Grammys

No kidding, SS. I watched the Grammys tonight for the first time in years, and other than LL Cool J's prayer for Whitney and Adele's song, felt like I wasted three hours of my life. And yes, that includes Jennifer Hudson's tribute to WH. Lesson learned - I just hope the Oscars don't go in the same direction.
  21. I'm sure the Grammys producers are wearing Depends about now.
  22. I have two guesses: Overdose, or Heart attack from the damage that drugs and alcohol do to your body. I hate it for her mother and her daughter.
