  1. I'm sure you can back that up with documentation.
  2. At least the question has some historical basis: The Three-Fifths Compromise of 1787 Honest to God, some people are waaaay too quick to find offense. Maybe if Dad had done some research (since he obviously wasn't paying attention when *he* was in school), he would have realized that this was a perfectly legitimate question. Like it or not, slavery *happened* - it's a lot healthier to acknowledge it and learn everything we can about it so that future generations can accept as a matter of course how abhorrent it was and is.
  3. I just hope Denver has a better-than-average back-up QB, because one good pop on Peyton and he's going to be *retiring*. I have a lot of respect for Peyton Manning - I think he's a stand-up guy and has been a superlative quarterback, but he is damaged goods. I can only suppose that the Broncos' owner thinks he'll recoup that salary in ticket and merchandise sales.
  4. Alas - I think not. Years ago when I was taking my paralegal classes, one of my instructors was a magistrate judge. He said that he had performed marriage ceremonies at the couple's choice of location before. If all else fails, maybe you could ask a judge.
  5. If you're willing to be married in a forest in Florida, South Carolina or Maine, you can be married by a notary public. No lie - one of my friends performed a marriage ceremony when he lived in Jacksonville.
  6. Use a *credit* card or PayPal, if the merchant will accept it. I would never, never, NEVER use a debit card for an online purchase.
  7. I don't know if they *still* issue them, but I have a straight ATM card from Credit Union of Georgia (formerly MACO). I can use it at grocery stores, PetSmart and Michael's, to name just a few.
  8. I love the practicality of her advice. I mean, if you think about how often a baby spits up, why *wouldn't* you put them down on their tummies to sleep? And when she writes about how babies feel more secure on their tummies because they're not flailing around looking for something to hold onto, well ... DUH. I also believe her idea of scheduling mealtimes and nap times is the beginning of teaching a child discipline and respect for his/her caregivers (Mom and Dad). As Dr. Denmark says, 'This little person has come to live with YOU and needs to learn YOUR rules.' I wish all new mothers
  9. Yeah, I probably wouldn't come forward, either. I *will* say, though, that if the bride was a REALLY good friend, I wouldn't hesitate to tell her that I couldn't afford the dress she had chosen. Likewise, if the *bride* is a good friend, she should have a pretty good clue as to what her friends can and can't afford. I'm afraid some brides don blinkers when they're in the throes of wedding-planning and just don't think about what is and isn't reasonable.
  10. Just wondering ... we don't have a garage or carport - just a concrete parking pad beside our house. Can your shelters be installed under those?
  11. Not just gas stations, but any business that has a kiosk that requires the scanning of a card, like outdoor ATMs (like the Presto machines at Publixes) and freestanding ATMs (think hospitals or even government buildings). There are even vending machines that take cards now. An ounce of prevention and all that, because it's just a matter of time until someone sues a place where a skimmer was installed - and it's ruled that the business is liable for failing to observe due diligence.
  12. I actually meant if the police had noticed a pattern of where the *victims* had used their cards ... for example, everyone mentioned visiting a certain gas station or a certain drive-thru ATM. That's how they can start pinning down where the skimmer was located and letting a potentially innocent merchant know that s/he has a security problem. I find it more than a little ironic that just a few years ago we were told that CASH was becoming obsolete, and that it's increasingly becoming the *recommended* way to shop again.
  13. Are the police willing to tell you if they've had any more similar incidents reported where there was a common location mentioned by the victims? I shopped at Aldi's last week and used my ATM card, but I just checked my statement and all is well. I just saw a story on the news a few days ago about those skimmers - it was mentioned in the story that we should always tug on the card slot before using a card, and if it seems loose DON'T USE IT! I've been eyeballing those slots for a few years now to make sure they look legit, but I guess I need to step it up some. I'm sorry this happene
  14. The hairstyle was terrible for her, but I *think* whatever was going on with her face was maybe whatever makeup they're doing on her to make her look older. She looked fine at the very beginning when she was jogging and talking to Sean Bean. (Shame they had to kill him off so quickly ....)
  15. Not enough typos. Nice try, though.
  16. I *think* the 'I'm a thread-killer' topic went long too, but I never read that one either. My attention span is pretty sho-
  17. I'm just wondering if Pubby is letting it go on to see if he can get P.com in Guinness' Book of World Records for the longest bulletin board topic ever. I haven't read the thread in a few days, but I'd find it hard to believe that anything new and different is being said in there by now.
  18. We love Ashley Judd. I'm not loving that hairstyle, though.
  19. Hope all goes well and that he makes a complete recovery!
  20. Maybe. Are you or have you ever been treated for depression? (That's a rhetorical question - I don't expect you to answer. ) Depression is a mental illness, but it is treatable. Many forms of mental illness are treatable, with or without medication, and many are curable. And nearly all clinically depressed people can function in society - hold down jobs, have relationships, act rationally. Insanity, OTOH, indicates that the person is, for considerable periods of time if not all the time, completely divorced from reality. There are drugs that can render those who are insane
  21. I get it, and even kind of agree with it. Anyone so obsessed with another person that s/he is willing to kill for him or her *is* mentally ill. The 'mentally ill' proviso prevented him from getting the death penalty. I believe the jury went with this option because they were pretty convinced that Andrea Sneiderman had a hand in what happened to her husband - in other words, they didn't believe that Neuman acted alone and therefore believe that someone else should share his punishment. I wish he'd be more forthcoming about what transpired between he and Andrea, and now that he r
  22. I went a few days ago in the late morning and though the parking lot *looked* full, the store itself wasn't too crowded at all.
  23. Ha - sounds familiar. A bunch of the guys got together and stacked old tires over the flagpole in front of the school. They may have stacked them in front of the doors, too, but I don't remember that. Let's just say that many of you weren't *born* when I graduated ....
  24. Nah - I just know what I like and/or who sounds good (to me). I don't particularly care for Skylar, but she sang the heck out of that Bonnie Raitt song. I kinda have a problem with them letting Joshua sing a song that was *covered*, as opposed to originally recorded, in his birth year, but that's not his fault and he sounded a thousand times better than Michael Bolton EVER did.
