The Paulding County Board of Commissioners signed a “Declaration of a State of Emergency” for Paulding County earlier today. Please take time to read the entire document so you will know what all is now going to be closed. #PauldingCounty

    https://www.ajc.com/news/crime--law/man-wheelchair-struck-train-killed-downtown-austell/kfbkOIIb0KYufq0ip527HN/

A few days ago, during the late morning hours of Veterans Day, a 53-year-old man in a motorized wheelchair was killed after he was hit by a train at an Austell railroad crossing. The only update since then has been to release the man's identity and report that he lived nearby.

An initial investigation indicated that the man attempted to cross the tracks by going around the crossing gates as the train approached. Witnesses told officers that the train horn was blowing and Norfolk Southern said the railroad crossing was equipped with gates, bells and lights that were all in working order.

I don't have any evidence to make any accusations, however, this does give me a hunch. What are the odds that the man was a disabled veteran, possibly with mental health issues, who deliberately entered the path of an oncoming train?

In today's society, there are many people with mental health issues who no longer want to live. Too frequently, family and friends are left in shock, saying if only they had known. Would you be able to recognize the signs of a suicidal person?

Following are some of the possible warning signs that a person may be at risk for suicide:

    • Excessive sadness or moodiness: Long-lasting sadness and mood swings can be symptoms of depression, a major risk factor for suicide.
    • Sudden calmness: Suddenly becoming calm after a period of depression or moodiness can be a sign that the person has made a decision to end his or her life.
    • Withdrawal: Choosing to be alone and avoiding friends or social activities also are possible symptoms of depression. This includes the loss of interest or pleasure in activities the person previously enjoyed.
    • Changes in personality and/or appearance: A person who is considering suicide might exhibit a change in attitude or behavior, such as speaking or moving with unusual speed or slowness. In addition, the person might suddenly become less concerned about his or her personal appearance.
    • Dangerous or self-harmful behavior: Potentially dangerous behavior, such as reckless driving, engaging in unsafe sex, and increased use of drugs and/or alcohol might indicate that the person no longer values his or her life.
    • Recent trauma or life crisis: A major life crisis might trigger a suicide attempt. Crises include the death of a loved one or pet, divorce or break-up of a relationship, diagnosis of a major illness, loss of a job, or serious financial problems.
    • Making preparations: Often, a person considering suicide will begin to put his or her personal business in order. This might include visiting friends and family members, giving away personal possessions, making a will, and cleaning up his or her room or home. Some people will write a note before committing suicide.
    • Threatening suicide: Not everyone who is considering suicide will say so, and not everyone who threatens suicide will follow through with it. However, every threat of suicide should be taken seriously.

  3. I'm happy to hear that Greystone Power is offering this option to allow electric vehicle drivers to further lower the cost of fuel. The down side is a much-higher rate during peak times on Summer afternoons, when your air conditioner is using a lot of electricity to cool your home. Another important equation is calculating how much electricity you expect to use to charge your car at a slightly reduced rate versus how much electricity will be used inside your home during peak summer times at twice the regular rate.

For over 5.5 years, my daily driver has been a Chevy Volt. The car is intended for short commutes with an electric range of about 40 miles before using the gasoline-powered range extender (i.e., generator). It has worked out great for me as I rarely use any gasoline. I have looked at the EV rate from the power companies over the years. However, since the battery capacity in the Volt is equivalent to one gallon of gas, I don't believe the savings from charging only at night would offset the higher rate during summer afternoons. If I had a fully-electric vehicle that would need much more electricity to charge and if I needed to charge every day, I probably would have signed up for a EV rate plan. For now, I'm still enjoying the freedom to charge at any time of day.

BTW, one perk of driving an EV in Las Vegas: Several casinos have free EV charging stations in their parking garages, usually right next to the casino entrance. Free fuel and VIP parking!

Unidentified Body Located on Ridge Road Identified by GBI

On Friday (07/10/15), the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Crime Lab confirmed the identity of the deceased individual that was located on Ridge Road in Paulding County on Friday July 3, 2015. The individual was initially identified by individuals on social media as Joshua Andrew Holmes (W/M, 25 YOA). Utilizing DNA and tattoos, the GBI was able to confirm that the deceased individual was in fact Joshua Andrew Holmes. Holmes was from Paulding County and had a Dallas address.

According to the GBI there were no obvious signs of trauma on the body. At this point, the manner of death is still under investigation, but Detectives do not believe there is anything suspicious about Holmes’ death.

The Sheriff's Office wants to thank the community for the outpouring of assistance in this case. Without the citizens assistance, it would have been much more difficult to determine Holmes' identity.

UNIDENTIFIED BODY LOCATED ON RIDGE ROAD

On Friday July 3, 2015 at approximately 1:19 pm, a 911 call was placed to Paulding County E-911 in reference to a possible body being located in the area of 3390 Ridge Road. Upon arrival Deputies confirmed that there was in fact a deceased individual in the wooded area behind the residence. When Deputies spoke with the complainant he stated that he had been smelling something "dead" behind his residence for a few days. When the complainant investigated the smell he observed what appeared to be a deceased body in the wooded area between his residence and the neighbors.

Once Detectives, Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and Crime Scene Investigators arrived on scene, they cordoned off the area and began processing the scene. At this point, since the body was badly decomposed Detectives and Agents do not have an identity or manner of death for the deceased. The only thing Detectives and Agents can say for sure is that it is a male subject that is deceased. An autopsy will be performed on Monday July 6, 2015 at the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta which will hopefully shed more light on who this individual is and the way in which he died.

Through the course of the investigation, Detectives and Agents spoke with several neighbors and residents in the area. One resident stated that on June 24, 2015 at approximately 12:00 pm a white male in his early 20's walked through her yard and was acting very strangely. The resident stated that the male was jumping around, holding on to a fence, laying on the ground flopping around, and acting as if he was under the influence of some type of illegal narcotic. The resident even had enough presence of mind to video the unknown male while he was acting this way. The resident called 911 but by the time Deputies arrived the individual was gone.

Detectives and Agents have taken a screen shot from the video that the resident filmed on June 24, 2015. The image is attached to the release. Detectives need the public's assistance in trying to identify who this individual is. At this point, Detectives believe that the individual in the photo may possibly be the deceased person that was located on July 3, 2015.

If you have any information on who the individual in the attached photograph is, please call the Paulding County Sheriff's Office at (770) 443-3010.
    Thanks

  6. If I had seen this sooner, I would have dropped in during the visitation. I knew Dennis for a short period of time after my mail route was adjusted and I started delivering to his street. He would frequently receive packages for his model train collection, so I saw him often. Dennis was a super nice guy. I guess it was about two years ago when I found out from a neighbor that Dennis had a stroke, wasn't doing well and would spend the rest of his days at a nursing home.

  8. So far it has been a good Tuesday, however, this is our first post, so mention this and get 10% off today.:yahoo:

Welcome to P'com! I'm glad that you have become a business member on here and can advertise your restaurant! http://cubandelights.net

I get the media noche with a side of fried plantains every time I go!

    I wished I lived closer. :(

Yup, me too! Well, I don't always get the same thing, but I've eaten the media noche and fried plantains most frequently. I've also washed it down with the Guanabana milkshake the last few times. If I lived close, I'd try everything.

  9. There are repair shops that try to milk as much money out of you as possible with fictitious problems and unnecessary add-ons, but then there are a few repair shops that do good honest work. Subby's Mower Repair is in the latter category.

Whenever Subby and his helpers do repair work on my outdoor equipment, I always feel that I am getting better service than I'm paying for. It's nice to have the option to drop-off equipment at his place or schedule a time for him to come to my house for either pickup or mobile service. I also appreciate the free preventive maintenance advice that Subby gives on this board and his website that helps save me money by avoiding repairs!

Will only one winner be chosen from the Facebook posts and the P'com posts or one winner from each website?

Does "4 Free Meals for your family" mean four free (combo?) meals or the winner's family will be given a meal four times?

  11. Sounds like the gear grease is leaking. I recently noticed black streaks in smoothies I had blended in my cheap blender when I poured the smoothie into a glass. It should be food-grade gear grease, so it shouldn't be a health risk (just a little gross.)

    KitchenAid Stand Mixer Grease

The gearbox on a KitchenAid mixer is filled with grease. Over time and use, the grease in the gearbox can leak or go bad for a number of reasons.

In the case of a leaking KitchenAid mixer, opening up the machine and replacing the old grease with new grease is usually the best way to fix the problem.

Replacing the mixer’s transmission gasket is sometimes necessary to fix the leak.

  12. Does anybody else use the Opera Mini browser on your mobile phone or other device? I've been using it for nearly two years but today discovered that P'com is now blocking it. I'm wondering if pubby put a block on IPs or something because regardless of what link I click on, I get an error message:

[#2000] You are not allowed to visit this forum.

Opera Mini is different from other mobile browsers because Mini routes all data through Opera's servers. The data is then compressed before being sent to you, therefore providing faster downloads and lowering your mobile bandwidth usage.
