  1. I see no opportunity for any industrial development here if the Hiram Parkway and widening of Carruth does not take place. And the county will be hard pressed to work with any industrial developers to build some nice A+ Industrial Parks if the SPLOST does not pass. There simply will be no funding availabe to do anything. Would you want to locate a business in an area that cannot put enough police and firemen on the road, which by the way will be full of potholes, and a 911 system which is antiquated ?
  2. Yes, and it was grant money that was available for purposes exactly like what Dallas did. Do you remember how unsightly downtown Dallas was before ? Of course King Jerry then goes and moves the courthouse out to 278, but that decision was made long after Dallas started working on the square. If you want all Federal and State grant money like that to be stopped then talk to you DC representatives. I am proud of the way downtown Dallas looks now, compared to 5-6 years ago. If they spent too much on the fountain ? I don't know. But it is a nice place to visit now. I am reminded of this every tim
  3. Braly's fields were completely torn out and redone as all soccer fields 3-4 years ago, and they added the lower fields. Parks & Rec spends a fortune on all the parking area at Paulding Meadows and paved the path thru the vendor booths in addition to rebuilding some of the booths as well as building the gazebo from the last SPLOST. The slopes there demand addition gravel and grading several times a year. Parks & Rec also gave all the Ruritan fields money from the past SPLOST and they are on the list again. I can't recall the exact amount but $10.000 per field is what comes to m
  4. Quail wrapped in bacon are cooking on the rotisserie now. I will finish them on top of the wild rice cooking in the rice steamer and add a quart of goose stock. The quail have been in an orange sauce brine since earlier in the week. Fresh asparagus and a romaine and arugula salad with vidalia, garden tomato and parmesian. The arugula in the garden is about done. A chilled cote du rhone and a crunch bagette to accompany.
  5. King Jerry spent money like a drunken sailor. And he was shown the door 2 years ago. I believe Austin's administration has shown great fiscal restraint. Some of the land purchases he made were at absurd prices, and the Taj Mahal was just overkill plain and simple. His Legacy, that we will pay for, for many years to come. As I asked earlier: Can someone show me where PDOT, Sheriff's, 911, or Parks and Rec has spent money lavishly, especially the past 18 months ? And for what it is worth, every expenditure I am aware of was indeed discussed at a BOC meeting, and then voted on by the B
  6. I believe Boykin got a special grant specifically for re-doing the downtown area of old cities to do the work from 1st Baptist Church back down Confederate to the other side of the Region Bank Building and the Courthouse Square [which now has no courthouse, just and old courthouse building]. It was one of those things they filled out the paperwork for and actually got the funding. I think the same with redoing the old theater and building the Dallas Civic Center. And it does look a whole lot nicer and is used much more.
  7. Right off hand, can you tell me where Parks & Rec, or any other department on the SPLOST has had frivolous spending ? And bear in mind Shearin, Carruth, and company made most of the land purchases for really all but Paulding Meadows, which Earl Duncan bought and Braly which is built on what was the dump.
  8. If you think the tetanus is all you would need you probably should stay away. Animal.....care to come by yourself ? I don't think the girls in the hen house are feeling up to it. Something about they would just stay behind their avatars even though they have no problem calling out others.
  9. LPPT, If they don't put the "wish list stuff" in the SPLOST, then their hands are tied for 6 years. I can hear the populace yelling now 5 years from now calling Parks & Rec a bunch of dumbasses for not including this or that in the SPLOST referendum summer of 2010 EVERYTHING still has to go through the department heads and the BOC before it is spent. It is no different from spending from the O&M funds. The issue with SPLOST wording is if it is not in there, vague as it may be, it can't be used for that. Michael Justis will still have to request the funds from the BOC when they ar
  10. Too late. The wording was approved back in April, and somewhat edited and approved in early May to get on the ballot. The wording as it is there cannot be changed now. And most of it is really pretty ambiguous. If they were to list a specific make and model of a dump truck on the SPLOST, and came across a better one for less money, per the law they would have to buy the one listed on the SPLOST. The guys at Parks & Rec have done one hell of a job building and maintaining our parks. They are really to be congratulated for what they have accomplished in the past 8-9 years. And I know fo
  11. I don't drink beer. I assume I will have to bring my own refreshments. Chicken Huh?
  12. For those of you who don't realize it, you are going to have an average 17% reduction in your tax bill this year, across the board. You should have received your revised assessment in the past week. I have not heard of any which went up. Mine went down 25%. Austin's new budget reflects this decrease in revenue for the county, and he has cut the budget to the bone as a result. There is no blackmail in looking at the obvious if the SPLOST does not pass. Plain and simple...if SPLOST does not pass, the BOC is going to be faced with 2 choices: Cut the services including police
  13. It comes from all of us, and we will be providing those same funds to the next guy on the list since we won't qualify for them. And don't be complaining about the Hiram parkway getting partially bulldozed from 92 to Cleburne Parkway/278, and then sitting waiting for the money to complete it. The Hiram sprawl will just continue to back up further and further in the afternoon. Traffic on Bill Carruth and 278/120 will become a nightmare intersection over time as well and even worse when the hospital starts construction.
  14. I cut until 10:30. Got 2/3 of it done. May try to run out and finish it this morning before it gets too hot. I have an umbrella holder for shade on the back.
  15. As I understand it the property already purchased for the park on 120/Bulloch is not going to be developed until the economy improves. The Burnt Hickory Park was contracted under the existing SPLOST and if they stop working on it now, I am certain there will be penalties to pay to the general contractor. There are no other plans for any parks that I have heard anything about. If we do not renew the SPLOST there will be no completion of the Hiram Parkway back around to 278 and Cleburne Parkway, AND no widening of Bill Carruth. In addition, we will forfeit $15 MILLION or so in matching money
  16. None......and no ad valorum taxes from them.
  17. I have to disagree. The main reason PC built the airport was so a bunch of the RBMDs could park their airplanes there, instead of Rome or Charlie Brown or McCollum. But our airport authority has been a bit lax about getting the hanger spaces built out after Speaker Richardson pissed Sonny off and he vetoed our funding. The Atlanta Airport authority bought the land on a hedge to build a 2nd airport IF they could not obtain their runway and terminal expansions at Hartsfield. Which they got, along with funding to move the interstate.
  18. My belt broke on me last night trying to get some grass cut when it cooled off to breathable temps, so I am going for left over corned beef tonight, and I will do my quail wrapped in bacon with wild rice and orange sauce tomorrow night. I SOOOO look forward to heading out there in another hour to cut grass......NOT!
  19. I think the Fair Tax would be great, but that is going to have to come out of the congress and the senate agreeing to rewrite the tax code, and I just don't see that happening. In the meantime, without the SPLOST, we here in Paulding are going to be in financial trouble. I don't see how the BOC can NOT raise the millage rate if the SPLOST is defeated, just to maintain minimum county services.
  20. Under King Jerry, who would have his "See I lowered the taxes again" party every August, yet when I got my tax bill in the mail in September the dollar amount would be 10% to 20% more than the previous year. Political grandstanding and nothing less. And his budget increased along with it. Then let's add in the "Self-sufficient" airport that was "Not going to cost the taxpayers of Paulding County a dime!". Yet, yet, the taxpayers paid $1.4 million for the entrance road, and I don't know if that includes the landscaping, along with a $250,000 per year budget for the airport staff [?], an
  21. Both of mine run continuously. It would defeat the purpose otherwise.
  22. It is a renewal. It is not taking any more of your money. Same as what it has been taking. I don't know how they do the accounting. The trucks and other equipment to load, haul, and spread could be bought with SPLOST, and gravel is considered, best I know to fall under a capital category with new construction and maintenance. I know they use one hell of a lot of gravel to keep the parking lots at Paulding Meadows/Duncan Park driveable. And they lost a great deal of it in the floods last fall.
  23. But they can also purchase other expendables [gravel, sod, asphault, fences, lights, bleachers, etc.] which are used for maintenance. Since so many of our parking lots are gravel, that is a large expense. I know for a fact there is a great deal of Parks and Rec trucks, tractors, mowers, etc. which are on their last legs and have been. But a great deal of the funding from the last SPLOST did go for buying White[y] Oak, Burnt Hickory, and the property out 120 at Bulloch Road as well as redoing and resodding all the soccer fields at Braly. And I believe they also have the ruritan ball fields
  24. My kids are gone, and really, other than working at Paulding Meadows, we don't use the parks. But in all honesty NG, would you want to see Paulding Meadows, the Rodeo, Trick or Treat Village, etc. canceled ? 4th of July Fireworks, Movie Nights at Taylor Farm, canceled ? The rains last September were devastating to the parking lots and vendor shacks at Paulding Meadows. The whole area around the creek were under water. Without gravel and equipment to haul it and spread it, they would have had to just "let them go" and let the creek eat away the area by those food vendors.. W
