Thanks, but yeah, I've checked the "simple" stuff. I will keep the other in mind. It's a Gateway--never had a problem until about 3 months ago--laptop is about a year and a half old. No smoking. Thanks--already bought two lap top cooling pads and neither solved the problem--different types just to be sure.

and while he was great at trying to help me with my problem--we have an idea of what's wrong, he doesn't work on laptops, so I need recommendations. Basically, we think it's a heat issue as the computer keeps shutting down randomly. I've already called Geek Squad, too, and they have a "free" diagnostic, but "if they can't figure it out with that," then they want $70 JUST to diagnose the problem and then would probably have to ship it out to a service center. I NEED my computer for work, so I'd prefer NOT to have to do that. So...anyone know of anyone who works on laptops? TIA! I
