Both of my personal trucks are 4x4 (F-250 and F-350). I use mine in rural areas, often on grass or dirt and often hauling trailers so it works well for me. You don't need it until you need it. In his case it is a toss up. I don't know that he really needs one in an urban area or campus setting like you described. I have always given money or food to those "begging" on the roads or parking lots. That's not to say I give to everyone I see but I let my heart and common sense guide me.
