  1. I thought about that area but didn't know if it had a name. I had a friend who lived there in the 70s.
  2. Nope, went up 10 cents a gallon at places like QT, Racetrac and Kroger and went up 30 cents a gallon in some other stores.
  3. I think technically, Fair Oaks was up to Booth Road (near Chattahoochee Tech), out Austell Rd to Atlanta Road, down to about where the Putt-Putt place was and possibly as far as Olive Springs Rd. It really was a small area and not really a "village". The majority of the houses were on the side of South Cobb Drive toward Atlanta Rd, in and around Fair Oaks Elementary, Osborne Junior High, the fire station and the library.
  4. If by "close" to Austell you mean between Austell and Marietta, that wouldn't be Fair Oaks. It is between Smyrna and Marietta, off South Cobb Drive, just south of Lockheed. Possibility of a "village" and near Austell would make me think Clarkdale. Could you e-mail the picture, since you can't get it to post?
  5. Must be Fair Oaks. Any idea what part of Cobb County? Marietta? Smyrna? Near Cobb Center? Mableton?? BTW, Fair Oaks actually goes back way before the 1970s. My mom lived there in the early 1950s, before she met my dad. It wasn't a new place then. to OP: if you can post a picture, I could probably tell you exactly where it is. And might be able to tell you who some of the residents in the area were.
  6. If I'm not mistaken, it is a federal law that dictates how many disabled person parking spaces a parking lot must contain. I thought it was up to each individual store but my nephew, who designs parking lots and does civil engineering for shopping centers like Target told me that neither he nor the store or the property owner dictates how many or even where exactly. And just what the heck was Dallas thinking in the ones they have on the square?
  7. Not efficient? The US has some of the best healthcare in the world. Just ask people in parts of Africa where IF they can find a doctor or a hospital, they have to supply their own medical supplies such as gauze and tape. Not profitable? Sure is....for the insurance companies. Instead of mandating everyone have health insurance, we need to mandate that insurers pay more than 20% of the submitted charges. I just got a bill from my orthopaedist for a cortisone injection. My portion is 3 times what the insurance paid plus I pay premiums every month. How is that not profitable for t
  8. If only people who had to take steroids or other medications in order to stay alive could just "get off their butt" and lose the weight that the medications cause it would be wonderful. I have a friend who HAS to go on steroids a couple of times a year. When he does, he blows up like a balloon. He is FAT then. When he goes off the steroids, he goes back down to his actually-a-little-on-the-thin side. I understand what you're saying about your mom, though. My mom used her back pain as an excuse NOT to do anything about her weight. Once she started losing weight while not doing
  9. I sympathize on the back spasms. I really and truly do. I used to have them a lot in my upper back, almost across my shoulders. It would hurt to breathe. Ironically it would hurt to walk, too. Now most of my back spasms are related to the subluxation of my SI joint. The shooting pains down the back of my thigh will literally throw me to the ground at times. No joke. They will. Not good when you have bad knees to boot. I agree about parking next to the buggy return. That's my favorite parking space! Supposed to be one of the safest places, too. When did a routine p
  10. I thought I saw someone said $250. I don't know. OK, I worded it badly. It was supposed to be a joke about things being affordable depending upon your point of view. Never mind.
  11. It was a joke. Sorry you missed it but it really was. It was meant to show that "affordable" is relative. The fine, to me, would not be affordable. Someone driving a vehicle like the one I saw at Food Depot the other might think $250 was pocket change. They drove an Excursion. I drive a Kia. Been around a while. How's the back spasm?
  12. I don't give a rat's furry behind what people think of me. Haven't since I grew up. It used to bother me when I was a kid but the older I get the less I care. I just double dog dare anyone to complain about me or my husband parking where we're entitled to park. I suggest Just Getting By's husband do the same. He is entitled to park there, regardless of his abilities or disabilities that particular day. I do understand having a good day and not parking there because there are others who need it worse. I avoid the disabled parking spaces at Kroger (or any other grocery store) fo
  13. Greeters, ambassadors, the people that stand around the entrance, whatever they were. They aren't there any longer. Been gone for a long time. About a year, I think. The ones they have had just inside the door lately have been selling Medicare supplement insurance. No, I'm saying that if you used an electric cart because you had muscle spasms, I should be able to when my back spasms up. But since I'm overweight, I'd just be thought of as lazy. I'd use one when my knee acts up and each step causes excruciating pain but then again, I'm overweight and I'd just be thought of as lazy.
  14. The obesity could have been aggravated by inactivity due to a condition which limits one's ability to be active. Hard to work out if you can't bend or lift more than 10 pounds. Difficult to run if you can barely walk due to arthritis or another condition. And once you pass 30, difficult enough to keep weight off without cutting out EVERYTHING. Breathing problems are even worse to try to exercise with. Sometimes you simply can't. You don't have the "ooomph" needed. BTW, Walmart did away with greeters a lot longer ago than two weeks ago. Muscle spasms and you needed the electri
  15. How do you "talk the doctor" into diagnosing you with something for which you can get the permit? What do they say? "Ah, doc, how about diagnosing me with COPD and putting me on oxygen.".
  16. There are more times that we park in other parking than in the disabled parking. We especially will not park there if there are few disabled spots. If it's at Home Depot, we park there but places like the grocery store or a restaurant, we don't. Like you said, someone needs it worse than we do (most of the time anyway).
  17. Disabling conditions are not always visible. Visible conditions may not be disabling. One should not confuse the two.
  18. So just because someone is fat and using one of the electric carts, they are LAZY? Could it be that they are on oxygen? Could it be that they have a condition that makes walking more than 200 ft difficult if not impossible? Could it be that they have severe arthritis? Could they have just undergone surgery on their foot, leg, hip, knee or ankle? I had foot surgery and was completely and totally non-weight bearing for two months. It was easier on both my husband and myself for me to use an electric cart in the store than to unload and then load the wheelchair. Since I'm overweight, I
  19. That's why I love the Walmart I go to. Rarely have a problem finding a parking spot.
  20. One should not be afraid people will judge them by whether or not they have a visible limp. Not all disabling conditions for which you can get a disabled parking permit are manifested by a limp. Not everyone who needs those parking places use assistive devices. Why should the presence of a limp, a cane, a walker or a wheelchair make one who has the parking privilege feel they are deserve the parking spot more than they would if they didn't have the limp, the cane, etc? We get funny looks at times, too. Often my husband carries his cane with him in the car but doesn't feel he needs i
  21. Right there where there was a fatality a few years ago, too? Hope everyone is OK!
  22. Then there are those like the one I saw at Food Depot in Lithia Springs two Sundays ago. They had a disabled person parking permit all right but it was their parking that was disabled. I sat there and watched them. They came down the aisle GOING THE WRONG WAY and then pulled into the parking space from the wrong direction, never once tried to straighten out and were sticking so far out in the aisle that people going the right way could barely get through. People backing out of the spaces on the other side had trouble backing out. I got a picture of the vehicle, a monstrosity of an Excursi
  23. I had to park a long way away from the door at Kmart the other day because there were no more disabled parking places available. I was too darned busy trying to find a parking spot to look to see if all of them parked in the designated spots had tags or placards. Actually the fine is "affordable" for most people, especially those who drive SUVs. Just sayin'
