  1. 4% state and it varies according to county. Cobb has additional 2%, Paulding an additional 3% and then City of Atlanta has up to 4% additional.
  2. And interest rates are lower since the 1980s. 30 years ago, when there was still corporal punishment in the schools, you didn't hear of a kid coming to class and killing 27 classmates and teachers such as happened at Columbine. BTW, you suggested Glassdogs and Stradial read some, here's some for you: http://www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/yrbs/pdf/us_violenceschool_trend_yrbs.pdf BTW, my middle daughter received a paddling in elementary school sometime around 1980 or 1981, so I know for a fact that corporal punishment was still around in Cobb County schools back then. And I
  3. Try looking at the link I posted giving the preliminary 2012 figures. You will clearly see that MOST crimes, violent crimes in particular, are not down from 2011. Some are, like I said. Does THIS look like reduced crime? 2012/2011 violent crime +1.2 murder +1.5 forcilble rape -0.3 robbery +0.6 aggravated assault +1.7 property crime -0.8 burglary -3.6 motor vehicle theft +1.3 arson -1.2 http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2012/preliminary-annual-uniform-crime-report-january-december-2012/tables/table_3_percent
  4. Lawsuits are filed all the time even when there was a crime committed and the person filing the lawsuit committed the crime. Are they won? Does it really matter? They are filed. They must be defended. Since the county school board would not want to have to defend themselves, they will likely work with the police and the DA to drop the charges. Even a THREAT of a lawsuit should get them to back down.
  5. I prefer searching the FBI crime stats. I got rather familiar with them while we were looking for a house.
  6. Hubby got on a plane one time to go to Charleston. He got off the plane, looked around and said to himself "why am I in Charlotte?" Turned out the planes for Charlotte and Charleston were boarding across the terminal from each other and were departing within minutes of each other. He just looked up at the sign and saw "Charl" and got on board. But he has woke up in the morning not knowing what town he was in. Without having had a single drink the night before. Just too dang many towns and too many times. He even got a police escort to the hotel once when he couldn't remember how to g
  7. If the crime rates were down and the war on drugs didn't exist, there would be too many prisons now. Much like my doctor told me when he told me I was healthy and he couldn't make any money on me because of it, if there is no crime there is no need for the for-profit prisons. There HAS to be crime for any of those to make money and that includes lawyers! No criminals, no income for criminal defense attorneys. BTW, here is information on crime rates for the states of Alabama through California for 2011 and 2012. Just a QUICK glance says that for the most part, with some exception
  8. Well, just tie her up and throw in the back of the truck. You and I both remember when the legislatures and Congress made the laws and the Supreme Court upheld them. Now it seems it is the other way around. And where IS personal responsibility now? How is it that crime rates are down but the prisons are overflowing and the judicial system is backlogged? Could it be the majority of the people who commit crimes are already in jail? I hope you at least know which city you're in.
  9. My nephew said he was charged 3.74% sales tax. That isn't even the correct amount!!!!!!
  10. No, it's a way for the schools to pass the buck. A PROPERLY administered paddling will not cause injury. A parent with an ax to grind will file a lawsuit.
  11. I agree. It's time we beat the crap out of the stupid lawmakers who made these laws. BIG difference between "beating" children and using corporal punishment like paddling. My husband was ABUSED and beaten as a child. I was paddled as a child. BIG difference.
  12. But if the school follows the law, they are immune to lawsuits, correct? So, if paddling is legal and they follow the law regarding it, where's the problem with it? Not arguing, just asking. How many kids are likely to be hurt or killed by a student who had a pocket knife locked in their car in the parking lot? I think that would be the same number as the number in ZERO tolerance. Personally I think the zero tolerance laws are asinine. I also think the Three Strikes laws are asinine. I believe a judge and a jury should have discretion in a sentence imposed on a convicted crimi
  13. It's going to look really bad for the school when the DA refuses to prosecute. And when the parents sue the school system, which I hope they do. The school should have discretion. But I guess that's just the way things are now. Nobody can use common sense and the brain that God gave 'em. Follow protocol. The thing about that that really sucks is when you follow protocol and something bad happens. I won't likely forget the incident at my daughter's high school. They instituted a dress code requiring students to wear a belt because it made it more difficult for the student to hid
  14. This isn't about a company paying it's employees or its CEO.
  15. The e's are definitely different, as are the n's. Since this was a take out, doubtful that there were two different people there.
  16. BTW, did anyone else notice that the writing on the receipt seemed to have been written by two different people? The N's in "none" are different than the other N and the E in "none" is different as well. And unless the picture blocked two letters, the person can't spell either.
  17. How did the customer KNOW that the person who prepared the take out meal was black? I mean unless every server in there was black, there would not have been any possible way to know for a fact unless they asked which server prepared the order. I used to frequent a restaurant in Douglasville and different servers prepared the take out meals. Sometimes two different servers would work on the same order, in fact. It could have been Cathy (who is black) and Lee (who is white) who both had equal responsibility for the order. The sad fact of the matter is that most of the time the servers
  18. Hubby's computer went down thanks to a virus. We did a complete restore and it's back up and running. We are having a problem with one of the programs he had. He seems to think that if he restores the program from a back up on an external hard drive that he won't have to register the program. I think he will. The back up won't know that it was already registered, it will just be a copy of the program. Who is correct?
  19. Considering the murderer of my friend had a conviction OF MURDER overturned because there was evidence taken in a search that was not included on the search warrant, I would think there would be probable cause to sue the crap out of the school system for this. And yes, I am sure this is why the conviction was overturned. The police were there to serve a warrant for another crime, seeking other evidence when the evidence from the burglary at the Prado was found. It was not mentioned in the search warrant and a judge overturned the conviction. So, yes, you're correct that just because you
  20. Commerce members get protection to a degree from public bashers. They don't get complete protection. And a person is free to tell another via PM what they think about another CM. ALL businesses mentioned in a topic title should be "generic" unless it is a commerce member. For instance, unless things have changed, CVS is not a CM so putting CVS in the topic title would be wrong. Putting "drugstore at such-and-such intersection" would be fine. ANY complaints about a business, commerce member or not, are generally moved to "covert condescension" mostly so they will not be searcha
  21. Hmmm. This brings up an interesting thought. The murderer of a friend of mine had his conviction overturned because items stolen during the burglary in which my friend (a cop) was killed, were not listed on the search warrant. As the presence of those items in his possession were the basis of the evidence of the crime, the conviction was overturned a few years later. And a murderer walked free. I'd think this kid would have a valid case to have this dropped since the tip was for marijuana, the consent was for pot and none was found. IF it had been a valid search warrant, the knife w
  22. They are not commerce members. Haven't been in a couple of years.
  23. Face it, not all parents are loving, caring, giving parents.
  24. I'm with you Mole. I'm glad my kids are grown and no longer have to deal with this. Unfortunately, with zero tolerance there is also zero common sense. I normally don't say or condone this, but I hope his parents sue the crap out of the school system.
