The simplest and possibly most effective way to prevent the spread of the disease here would have been to isolate the family members of this man and anyone else who had been in similarly close contact for the required period of time to ensure they don't have the disease. Period. Impractical and inconvenient for those people? Of course. But still better than an outbreak. Not exactly the same thing but in my late teens I lost a substantial amount of weight basically by eating as little as possible for as long as I could keep it up & then eating normally (which was a fairly poor diet of sweets, salty snacks, bread and a lot of fried foods-typical teenager junk food and fast food) It isn't a very good weight loss strategy.
