  1. Phil On Growing Up in Pre-Civil-Rights-Era Louisiana “I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.” mrnn Drew Magary is
  2. Here is the interview. A couple of things he said got him in hot water but the biggest deal is being made of this: “It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.” Needless to say, the LGBT community is up in arms about these comments. A&E decided to suspend Phil indefinitely as a result. With the way that family operates, I wouldn't be surprised i
  3. Sounds like their customer service can't meet demand. The fact that there is demand is a good thing. mrnn
  4. Florida has got to top the list....seems like half the time there's something crazy going on in the news it's happening in FLA. Texas because they're just weird people...the whole embrace of modern-day urban cowboys, everything bigger, the schools....that state is a psychologist's wet dream. Maine....surely no state, especially in the Northeast, can be so boring that you never hear a peep about it. Something odd about a state like that. mrnn
  5. I dl'd the pilot for Masters of Sex...lots of skin . Interesting storyline, too, so I'll definitely watch some more. Thanks for the recommendation. I don't watch a ton of TV but definitely try to keep up with what I perceive to be the good stuff. I make a point of watching: Shameless Boardwalk Empire Real Time Downton Abbey Californication It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia The League Homeland Parks and Rec Mad Men Losing Dexter (no matter how bad it became), Eastbound and Down, and Breaking Bad this year have me looking for some new stuff to watch. mrnn
  6. I'll have to check that one out. Shameless is another good one that is starting up again in January...worth checking out if you haven't already. mrnn
  7. Grrr. Such a disappointing show. Season 1, and to an extent season 2, were so good. This season was just, christ, it was awful. Now that the season has ended, I have absolutely no clue why they wasted so much time on the whole Dana Brody thing....it was painfully hard to watch and now I realize that I could have fast-forwarded through every scene with her in it and not missed a thing. Carrie is getting annoying....she got shot for not following orders and now she's getting promoted to one of the most important positions in the CIA? Really? Last night's episode was just boring, too,
  8. As ST pointed out, this ruling has nothing to do with taxes or state-recognized polygamy. According to the author, this ruling is equivalent to the "legalization" of sodomy....you can't be arrested for living as polygamists under this ruling..that's as far as it goes. mrnn
  9. You can usually get them at any grocery store. They should be near the lighters/tobacco area. The flints come in a small package to easy to look past. mrnn
  10. What were the answers to your questions? Like did you ask to see the contract? If they said no, what was their explanation? Did you ask where you can find info about other Propeller Investment endeavors? How many commercial flights a day were discussed? mrnn
  11. I know Tundra hasn't....but have you had a one-on-one with any of the commissioners armed with this list of questions? mrnn
  12. Not just different levels, light years between levels. And I don't recall anyone here on PCom saying that those kids shouldn't have been punished...there was disagreement whether there should have been criminal charges and expulsion or rather suspensions handed down. mrnn
  13. Outside of both Jake and Ethan being kids, the cases have absolutely nothing in common, imo. A rich kid, who's been in trouble with the law over alcohol before, KILLS 4 people and seriously injures a couple more, because he stole beer, popped some valium, got drunk, and lost control going 70MPH in a 40MPH zone is not even in the same damn ballpark as a kid who took part in a school tradition that went a bit too far. mrnn
  14. Oh man...that would be awesome. Not sure how it would work unless they get several teams to come here (travel is usually minimized for spring ball) but I've always wanted to go to a spring training. Great opportunity for the kids to get autographs, run into players at the park or around town, and see live baseball early. mrnn
  15. Oops...thanks cptl. Mods, please close. mrnn
  16. Apparently affluenza is a condition suffered by rich kids whose parents fight and divorce leading to them not understanding what is right or wrong. So says a psychologist in Texas that testified on behalf of a 16yo who killed 4 pedestrians and paralyzed 2 passengers when he had a .24 BAC and wrecked his Ford F350. He was sentenced to 10 years probation and no jail time. Link mrnn
  17. The sad thing is that I don't know if you're serious or not....regardless, this had me cracking up. mrnn
  18. Speaking as an atheist, I don't think he's as much a child of God as he is a child of humanity and of decency and of strong character. Point being, it doesn't matter which God you worship or if it's the lack of a God which you "worship", he's shown himself to be a man whose nature is one to be respected and admired. When I imagine the time when religions were born, when humanity began looking for explanations for phenomena both human and macrocosmic, I imagine purely good intentions. While I believe religions evolved over time to become the source of more bloodshed, pain, suffering, power g
  19. Fo Realz! We've got our local government being shady as all hell with this airport deal..even though I'm in favor of the deal they've been, and continue to be, ridiculously opaque discussing something that is supposed to be such a great deal for the county. We've got Gov. Deal under federal investigation for ethics and, per TP, one of the least ethical states in the union based on a non-partisan scorecard. With the feds we have stories of NSA spying on this, that, and the other coming out seemingly every day coupled with complete and utter incompetence from Congress. Horrible!
  20. Shocking. I'm sure no one saw that coming given his, eh, issues before being elected. http://www.ajc.com/news/news/fbi-subpoenas-state-ethics-officials/ncH7k/ mrnn
  21. You should have offered her some tubesteak smothered in underwear to, ya know, help her diet. mrnn
  22. I think Snowden had to have been right there with the Pope...Snowden has had quite an impact on the world this year. Either way, solid choice. mrnn
  23. It definitely varies from person to person....my mom died last year of complications 26 years after diagnosis...was paraplegic within 10 years and quadriplegic for the last 8-10 years of her life. I believe The Postman and TJB have or have had wives who experienced similarly aggressive results after diagnosis. On the other hand you have folks like Montel Williams, or some of the folks people know mentioned in this thread, who live with pain and such but never really lose much function. I guess it's just luck of the draw, really. Given your friend's age, that seems very, very late for
