  1. You guys are something else. Can we just say a prayer for those kids at OUR schools. I am sure all of them are sleeping just fine by now thanks to our teachers and staff. the original NN
  2. When I put salt (NaCl) on my driveway, it prevents ice. It's a chemical reaction. When human consumption of fossil fuels dumps BILLIONS of metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year, I wonder if a chemical reaction happens then, too? I mean, really, wtf do you guys think happens to all that CO2? mrnn
  3. This FB page was posted in another thread. https://www.facebook.com/groups/397839673695382/ Just take 10mins to skim over it...lots of good people. mrnn
  4. <br /><br /><br /> That page makes me proud of the good folks we have in the ATL. Awesome! mrnn
  5. <br /><br /><br /> They downgraded the watch to an advisory late last night. Every model but the RAP and SREF showed the arctic air moving further South. Folks can be on here saying that they "knew" we would get his last night but it's just not true unless they were completely ignoring the main models (GFS, NAM, EURO). It wasn't until this morning that the radar started mimicking the RAP that we knew it was probably providing correct guidance when it said that NGA would get hit. This is why the advisory wasn't changed to a warning until this morning. Again, the BOE is
  6. <br /><br /><br /> I don't argue that....on the other hand, many people believe (myself included) that the BOE has access to conference calls with local METs and the NWS that we, as parents, do not have...calls which you would THINK would include worst-case scenarios. I don't fully excuse the BOE for their decisions today and I'm still pretty confused why the middle and high schools were let out before the elementary kids (big difference, mentally, between a 6th grader being forced to spend the night at school and a 1st grader). With that said, they obviously had a r
  7. Well, you'll be glad to know that the GDOT representative that was just on Ch2 says that ice isn't a problem in the metro..."there's very little ice". The problem was that everyone tried to commute at the same time and, due to accidents, now it's all backed up. The trucking nerve of this guy! mrnn
  8. <br /><br /><br /> Uh, no. We were moved to an advisory from a watch last night around 930pm. I got the pixel on the warning this morning at 0915 (though I think the warning was issued a few hours earlier via my WeatherRadio app). They (NWS and local Mets) blew it. mrnn
  9. Surely I'm not the only one who is appalled that our local meteorologists and the NWS went as conservative as they did with this storm. I can't blame the BOE for not closing today...they acted on the information they got from the weather pros. The problem is that these weather pros take the position that they'd rather say impacts/accumulations will be minor than to warn folks of what could really be brewing. I can only believe they do this because they feel their credibility is maintained easier if folks end up with more snow (because people will typically be happy) than saying a huge storm
  10. I think my baby girl is on one of those buses stuck on 61 and High Shoals. Does anyone know if I walk up there if the driver is allowed to release her to me? mrnn
  11. Finally getting a pretty good snow shower in the High Shoals area....very small flakes but coming down pretty well. mrnn
  12. <br /><br /><br /> I'm starting to get ticked lol....it's literally falling all around us from what I'm reading here and elsewhere. mrnn
  13. Last couple model runs have us looking a little better for some accumulation. I've been glued to 3 different weather boards today while trying to work....while most of the conversations are well beyond my pay grade, I'm able to pull some stuff out. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that no one really knows what the hell is going to happen being there are 3-4 different things all converging so timing and some other effects come into play that the models can't reliably nail down. I think we'll end up with around 2-3"...which probably means we'll just get a few flurries. mrnn
  14. <br /><br /><br /> I can understand your viewpoint...I don't agree and think it's very insensitive...but I get it. I think you're missing a whole lot of "cause" and just looking at the "effect". Minorities are still at a major disadvantage when it comes to earning power, despite the inroads made with affirmative action. Minorities, especially blacks, face much higher rates of incarceration and single-parent households which, again, leads to lower incomes. When you say that Clayton County found themselves inundated with "non-whites", they didn't just show up. There
  15. According to DDD over at GON, who has a bit of a cult following as an amateur weather guy, we're going to be getting into some serious cold again next week and some possible snow to go with it. With a winter like this, the schools are going to have to figure something out because our kids can't miss 5-10 days (or delayed starts) due to cold weather. Which sucks....the kids around here aren't prepared for these temps...but they can't keep delaying/cancelling school if this winter continues to be this brutal. mrnn
  16. First issue I noticed was almost 2 weeks ago when the reputation viewing thing wouldn't work to show who gave + or -. It works in IE but not on Chrome. Then, this past weekend, I was being redirected from the site everytime I tried to open a topic. That was fixed, apparently, and now I see all these weird HTML coding from folks in their posts. mrnn
  17. Our oldest had a, eh, text phone(?) until he was 16...just a phone to make calls and send/receive texts. When he turned 16, he got an iPhone5 for Christmas. Other than the new data plan, he already had a line so didn't cost us any extra. Wife and I just upgraded to iPhone 5s's so we had our old 4's available...13yo got one. Costs us an extra line and data plan. More than I wanted to spend but I like being able to get ahold of him when I need to. Our 8yo daughter got the other iPhone 4 but no service on it...she uses it like an iTouch on wifi. She's much too young for phone service.
  18. If it happens to be registered to your AppleID (or you know her AppleID), you can login to www.icloud.com and locate it on a map as long as it's powered on. If someone took it and powered it down, you can also choose to be alerted when it next connects to the internet. mrnn
  19. I'm a Titans fan so pretty indifferent on today's games but, man, I sure do love the attitude of Seattle. That Sherman post-game with Erin Andrews was awesome. He'll catch a lot of grief about being "classless" or "tarnishing the game" or "a poor role model"...whatever....the dude made one hell of a play and was obviously pumped up. This isn't golf or chess, it's football...trash talk is great. mrnn
  20. Well done, sir. Congrats! You're right...there is a giant hole in data on older used vehicles and you're very smart to try to capitalize on it. Noticed that your article also spurred nearly 700 comments...very nice! mrnn
  21. Wasn't he the Apple Store guy? I remember reading about him going to Penney's....there was even a topic on PCom about it. If I remember right, the guy did away with sales and went with some sort of tiered pricing or something. I didn't realize he was canned...didn't take long for that experiment to fail There's absolutely no brand loyalty to Sears or Penney's any longer...they are considered old people stores. I don't think the department store model is dead...Macy's still does fairly well by selling clothing brands and furniture that young people want...but I'm with Fox, both Sears
  22. Great points...and I wholeheartedly agree that prison nowadays isn't what I have in mind when I say "life in prison". I want to border on torture for life imprisonment....I want a ton of solitary confinement, the minimum exposure to fresh air, hard labor, minimum sustenance, no visitation and no getting out for funerals....I want them treated as dead men walking in a man-made hell. This may sound somewhat obscene but if we're good killing a criminal, surely these policies would be acceptable, right? mrnn
  23. Until a 5 year old asks why they're murdering someone on TV and, regardless of how eloquently you explain the situation, the 5 year old walks away thinking it's ok to murder someone as long as you have a good reason. As if our society isn't trucked up enough... I'm not Mr. Anti-Death Penalty (though I prefer life imprisonment because it's not an easy-out like death is), but we are indisputably supporting murder for revenge as a society. I don't find that particularly humane nor something I'd expect a global leader in a civilized world to embrace. mrnn
  24. I'm sure it has nothing to do with their business model. mrnn
