Hybrids get around the battery issue because of the gas engine. However; you loose some of the energy efficiency of the electric only car. It's still the batteries.

The other issue that is limiting electric cars from becoming mainstream is the same issue that has always kept them from taking the place of fossil fuel....the batteries. While some minor gains have been made, the best they have right now is basically a bunch of laptop batteries strapped together. As far as I know; there is no technology breakthrough on the near horizon. I think there will be a battery or other fuel source that will replace fossil fuel at some point, but it will likely be awhile because the technology just isn't here yet.

Electric motors produce buttloads of torque, right from zero RPM up. An internal combustion engine can't match one. Unfortunately, Tesla is having terrible quality control problems and will likely be out of business within 3-5 years. But not to worry; Elon Musk will find a new way to profit from taxpayer dollars.
