They shouldn't be called that anymore--they prefer "European-American."
This is funny. I came in here to post a "sorry for getting the topic closed" thing and saw yours! What's with us tonight?! The thing I posted (which we don't need to discuss here) sounded so innocent in my head, then I went back and read it and, well, totally different in writing. Oopsie! Sometimes I write like I talk, which is to ask lots of questions... gotta learn how to post messages!!!
eta: that quote was what I was going to reply to in ANOTHER closed thread. I was just going to say that I prefer "ecru."

Oh man...I love NPR. It's chock full of really great shows. I love Fresh Air, Car Talk (Those guys are a scream), and my all time fav Wait, Wait! Don't Tell Me!
And of course Prairie Home Companion. Plus all of the great music from Classical to Opera to Jazz.
And what kind of self respecting gay man would I be if I didn't watch every Meridith Baxter weeper on Lifetime. Even though they don't show The Golden Girls as much, it was because of Lifetime that all 7 seasons are out on DVD. For that reason alone I'm grateful.
Hmm, gay man, Meredith Baxter... have I finally found someone I can talk Ugly Betty with??!
My significant other and I were just talking about today's Wait! Wait! but he fell asleep mid-sentence and now is snoring. I download the podcasts of WWDTM, CT, Driveway Moment, Sunday Puzzler, and a few other things.
The thing I need to try is country music. I'm a big fan of the really old stuff, but anything in the last 10 years I have a hard time with. Thanks for the post, maybe I'll turn on one of those stations and check it out again. There's got to be someone I like out there...
Trying sushi changed my life. That's a great place to start...

Just saw the last quarter. OSU threw 3 or 4 interceptions which led to at least 2 touchdowns.
Ouch! Was Mallett playing for them, too? It was interesting how Mallett wouldn't get anywhere near Manningham on the sidelines. He knew he'd get his butt beat.
-
Ah, the plot thickens! OSU are LOSERS!!!!!
-
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Nope, still don't feel better.
Well, bottoms up, folks.

Let's see... Oscar is one of my best friends, and Nikki and Sami Hain are real life great friends whom I love to death! I know and admire Penguin in real life. A few more friends have accounts but never post.
I've also met LGM and Thomas, and I hear that Dallas Girl goes to my gym but not sure whether I would recognize her.
I don't like doing M/G's, but if JMT or CC want to get together, I might become available...

I've never heard of half of these, but geez, The Wine Tavern? How can you go wrong there?

I think you are sooooo talented!!! Those doilies are so beautiful that they make me want to figure out what to use them for and get some! Oh my gosh, the baby items are the coolest ever.
In my personal opinion (I'm trying to find something for improvement, since all positive isn't always helpful), scrunchies should be for little girls, so I'd make more that are pink or even school colors for cheerleaders. That way, you can direct your efforts. Also, think about when people will be most likely to say, "That's really pretty, where did you get it?" Not on a 42-year-old!
You have a great talent!

Although I disagree with many of the Sheriff's policies and I feel that the department could be run much better I want to assure everyone that I have absolutely nothing to do with any story written or on television in reference to the Sheriff. I don't know what information is known or not known by Mr. Travis. I will have to watch it to find out. If you have any doubts about this please contact Randy Travis yourself. I have never spoken with him, emailed him or met him.
I have declined to speak publicly about issues that are personal in nature in reference to the Sheriff and I plan on continuing NOT getting personal.
I have never said that the Sheriff is a bad person. To his friends I want to say again I am greatly disappointed in the policies of this administration. As an example, if you look at today's Paulding.com you will see several serious car crashes. This could be corrected very easily. I will speak about that later and on a different thread.
I look forward to meeting and speaking with everyone in the future.
Sincerely,
jk
I'm working on learning more about the area in which I live, but I still don't know a lot of names in the political arena. JK Rogers... are you running against the sheriff or something? TIA for clearing that up, and sorry if I'm supposed to know who you are.

Off Poplar Springs, there are some here.

I hear the Ukrainians aren't too bad either...

Alright take this deep into your mind and really think about what I am about to talk about.
If you have ever had a hamster of any pet that runs in a wheel(in this case I am using a hamster)
Okay, so if you think about it a hamsters life is totally controlled and there is nothing they can do about it. It must really suck to have your life so controlled right?
Well just think about it....our lives are humans are not so much different
Hamster - we feed them when we want them to eat
Human - If you have a job or if you are at school, you are told when to eat
Hamster - We turn the lights off or cover them up when we want them to go to sleep
Human - It gets nighttime when "most of us sleep" and we have no contol over it
Hamster - Are so small compared to things around them
Human - Even tho there are some things that are smaller than us most of the stuff we are around are so much bigger
AND LAST AND MY FAVORITE
Hamster - Runs around on a wheel to waste time
Human - DUH! what does the world do? IT ROTATES....we are on a giant wheel wasting time
Hmmm...
Hamster: has food available, eats when he wants
Humans: same, in fridge
Hamster: Sleeps all day with breaks for exercise, wakes most of the night with breaks for sleep
Humans: opposite
Hamster: has bed justs the right size, potty just the right size (yep, ours is potty trained)
Humans: same, although I'd like a king-sized
Hamster: has a wheel that goes places
Humans: same
Hmmm, although our hamsters are very different, maybe it's like a dog: dogs and owners just alike. That wasn't what I was going for with this post, but just ended up that way! Hmmm! (maybe no more posting after wine for me tonight)

Thank you so much for posting! Your mom was a rare breed - one of those people who radiated kindness and serenity, whom you could tell was a good person just by walking by. We only spoke with her a couple of times, but we always looked for her when we walked in the door at Target. It was reassuring to see her there. She was so kind to our 3-year-old son when so many others there won't even acknowledge his presence when he says thanks on our way out.
The day she passed on, I was shopping there, and there was a very obvious sorrow hanging over the entire store. I tried on something in the dressing room and noticed employees who were upset. I went through the checkout line and noticed it again. It was so difficult to leave there that day when I asked what was wrong, but how things changed when we all started posting about her!
I couldn't make it to the funeral, but I hope you know that lots more people than were there mourn her loss and celebrate her life. Also, sorry for misspelling her name in the original thread!

Welcome to the
Terrordome, er, Happy Super Silly Fun Land! Remember, once you've posted, you can never leave the Family. -
I have sentimental attachment to them, because I saw them in Moscow in 1991. I thought they were amazing. The show seemed so long, but I was a kid, so who knows... The Kozak (what is it in English? Cossack?) dancers were phenomenal. You are going to have so much fun!!! The music, the colors, the acrobatic dancing, and the culture - och! Have a blast!!!

SHE POSTED IT IN MY THREAD ABOUT NEEDING ELECTRIC HEATERS FOR A FAMILY WITH SMALL CHILDREN
ARE YOU YELLING AT ME?! I DON'T READ EVERY THREAD, YA KNOW!
-
Uh, I did not receive the memo... but FEEL BETTER!!!
-
All the poop!!!
(Well, I am a SAHM)
-
I love that you notice the little things. I was getting up to go get a bowl of cereal (guess anxiety is making me hungry), but I was stopped by a sound. There's a dove cooing right outside the window next to me, and it's beautiful!

When a name ends with an s you do just '. In your initial example, the correct form would be Joan's car. But if it were the Jones family's car it would be the Jones' car.
Okay, so here's where the book got complicated. It was written in England, so I don't know whether our English is technically the same as theirs (in practice, it isn't). The author said that it depends on the pronunciation of the name. Shoot, I have to go get the book.
Found it, right behind "Salt." I'm not kidding. A book about salt.
From Eats, Shoots, and Leaves:
http://eatsshootsandleaves.com/eslex.htmlCurrent guides to punctuation state that with modern names ending in "s" (including biblical names, and any foreign name with an unpronounced final "s"), the "s" is required after the apostrophe:Keats's poems
Philippa Jones's book
St James's Square
Alexamder Dumas's The Three Musketeers
With names from the ancient world, it is not:
Archimedes' screw
Achilles' heel
If the name ends in an "iz" sound, an exception is made:
Bridges' score
Moses' tablets
And an exception is always made for Jesus:
Jesus' desciples
However, these are matters of style and preference that are definitely not set in stone, and it's a good idea not to get fixated about them.
I admit, I fixate. You all just made my day, honestly. I wonder whether we could petition for a "grown-ups need to learn too" thread.
-
Well if I make Typos etc feel free to fix it. You won't hurt my feelings at all.
I know, but it's not really the typos that get me. I mean, who knows how many screaming kids are running around in the background, maybe the TV's on, maybe you're trying to run out the door and just want to check that thread really quickly... it's just that I think people must honestly not know how to use them! I'd like to form a support group for people who want to learn. Or maybe a book club: the first book would be Eats, Shoots, and Leaves. I never thought I'd voluntarily read a book about punctuation, but I did and I'm so glad! I never took an English class after high school, so I guess I'm a little extra interested in it now.
-
I just bookmarked it - thanks! You just reminded me: there's a church on Dallas Highway (120) at the Polk intersection: Living Water's Ministry.
-
Actually, what she described was about the use of an apostrophe, however, she did use commas in her sentences where appropriate.example:its = The baby fell out of its highchair.it's = It's going to be a beautiful day.
Yes! I don't know where he got commas... is there really a rule? I can't imagine why - I'm not trying to pick on anyone; I just can't imagine where people would learn this stuff if no one tells them... BTW, someone needs to lecture me on ellipses or whatever, because I LOVE them!
Yes I know thats what she described.....what I was talking about is I would have used exsessive apostrophes to sell the whole thing.....I wasnt being rude.....just having funYou,re funny!
eta: off to daily life, back later.
apologies?

Oh, are we in the school forum? Arrgh, I'm so dumb sometimes!!! Well, I was talking about a sex thread, which is most definitely NOT in the school forum! Do they make breathalyzers that hook up to keyboards???
Have a great Sunday, everyone!
