Blaring Commercials No More: FCC Passes Rules to End Loud Commercials Pretty soon there'll be no need to reach for the volume-control button on the remote the next time a commercial interrupts a favorite TV show. Today the Federal Communications Commission unanimously approved new rules that require cable and broadcast stations to play commercials at the same volume as the TV shows they break into. The new FCC order is a step in carrying out the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation, or CALM Act, which President Obama signed in 2010. The CALM Act required television stations

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada on Monday became the first country to announce it would withdraw from the Kyoto protocol on climate change, dealing a symbolic blow to the already troubled global treaty http://news.yahoo.com/canada-first-nation-pull-kyoto-protocol-001955697.html So who will be next and who has never joined?

I am of the mindset that there are Tax Deductions and Tax Loopholes. My 179 deductions are dedtuctions while a few years ago there was a large "business equipment" deduction allowed. that deduction had a "unintended loophole" in it that allowed folks to buy SUVs rather that Bobcats and such. That to me is the difference.

So we are sitting there last night watching Night at the museum 2. Daughter (12) decides to go "upstairs". Yep all 4 of them. Anyway, she steps on the tread with her left foot and only catches her big toe on on it and slips off. I have done this as well no biggie, just throws you of balance. You would have thought someone shot her. So the kids have a tendancy to exaggerate their ills and I tell her to tough it out after finding out exactly what she did. Before bed we give her some Tylenol. She wakes us up at 0130 just screaming about her toe. And she will not go back to bed. So I relent and pa

JM2, I was thinking ( very dangerous thing for me I know) and wanted to ask a question. Way back towards the begining of our discussion, you stted all you needed to start your company was a modem, internet and a computer. That was all it would cost you to start your IT company. I assume that you were trained and / or went to college to learn your skills. So I would think that a 4 year college degree has a substantial "start up" cost associated with it as well. $10,000 / year or so for 4 years is $40,000 plust 4 years of your your life before you can even begin to get that ROI. At least in lawn

As far as earning out of country income and accounting for taxes, you are correct. However, I have a friend who was in Iraq doing that. He was not having ANY taxes witheld because "he was going t have zero liability". He hurt his back after about 8 months and had to come home. He did not make the 330 days out of country and now owes back taxes. And they would not approve his waiver. So have some taxes witheld just in case. BTW The education job is only while the kids are in school and the lawn care is mostly while they are out of school. And I file a schedule C for the business income. I a

My personal start up was about $3500. I already had the truck, trailer trimmer blower and edger for my own house. I bought the mower and began upgrading the light weight equipment that first year. I bought a 1 year old mower from a friend who wanted to move up to a hydrolic mower for $2500. I was earning a profit early in my 2nd season. I did have to build a customer base. I switched from remodeling in 2002. You want to talk about a high start up cost, Start looking at construction related tools. Now I am earning the same extra (well a little less) doing education for the fire departme

You just keep missing the part where this is my 2nd job. I use it to make some extra money. Well at least until my wife lost her job. Now I am using more of it than I am saving. The WHOLE POINT of my post was that I KNOW THIS IS a low end job. But solidly middle class work. Even though, if you wanted to start this business to support your family, IT IS GOING TO COST YOU. You have an education and a skill that appears to be highly marketable. The lawncare business is more for those that do not. Do You think I should make what you make even though I only need to know how to operate a mower and w

What do you consider serviceable?!? The truck I use and showed is a 8 year old 2004 with 96,000 miles. I do want a truck that I can depend on to start every day and multiple times everyday. What is it that I have posted as proof that you do not understand? I showed the mowers and truck. If you really want to use commercial grade trimmers, edgers blowers and such you can easily add another $1,000 above what I allowed for other equipment. $1,000 will get you an open trailer like mine. If you want the same in enclosed add another 2 - 3 grand to that. Go ahead and try to set it up for less! Sure y

Basically, after everything, if I was only allowed to keep 10% of my earnings (if taxes were 90% like some here point to after WWII and think we should return to) I would be able to keep about $3-$4 / yard that took me about 1 hour to cut.

I work alone. Remember tis is a side job that I use to supplement my other income. You can not use a standard business model on me. I had to have a vehicle to get to the fire station anyway, why not use it the 2 days I am off after each shift. I already have HC. I added other insurance on top of that. I paid cash for the equipment from savings. Again, my point is that it will generally cost about the amount that I quoted to set up a business like mine if you start from scratch. And mine is a low cost set up. hhttp://www.gravely.com/walk-behind-mowers/Pages/default.aspx#ttp://www.grave

You obviously have no idea about commersed island lawn care. A decent work truck is about $10k. A new walk behind commercial mower will start about $4500. You must think that I cut grass with a 40" Murry which runs about 1000. I generally cut about 10 - 15 yards every week. My mower was used when I bought it for 2500 from a friend and it had 125 hours on it. I am now almost at 1000 hours. I'd like to see your 400 mower do that. My mower needed a major service last year that cost about 800 though. My truck I already had as well as the trailer. My business is only a part time while I'm not worki

Go ahead and tax the another 10% if it makes you happy. I already posted the numbers. It won't really help. 11% will yield an increase of about $100 Billion / year. Then what? You still have to cover the other $1.2 Tillion or so / year deficit before we can even begin to pay down the debt. Have a good time with that... Most folks only want to tax the rich because they think it will make themselve feel better to be taking MORE away from the rich. I do not believe even the Dems would take that money and redistribute it back to everyone else. Even if they did it would be about $500 / perso

The rich do put their money into startups via funds and stocks if not direct loan and lending. As far as increasing the "earnings" of the middle class. How do you intend to get a hamburger flipper to $30 / hr or $62,400 /year? How about a factory worker making $150k / year when a company can easily go over seas and pay the worker there $15k to do the same job while producing the same item? The bigger question is how do we get the American consumer to willingly spend 2 - 3 times the import price just so they can have the same thing that was made in the USA by a "hopefully not stoned" worker? This is why you shouldn't go looking for the golf balls hit 'Out of Bounds' in Florida!!! THIS IS NOT A PYTHON! This is a 15 foot Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake - the largest ever caught on record, in fact. This snake was found Near the St. Augustine outlet, in a new KB homes subdivision just south of Jacksonvi...lle FL. A little research revealed the following: One bite from a snake of this size would contain enough venom to kill over 40 full grown men. The head of this snake alone is larger than the hand of a normal sized man. A bite from those fangs would be comparable to being stabbed by
