Did you hear the big explosion this morning
nschur replied to shopthebookworm's topic in Business NEWS
I saw special on Pearl Harbor not too long ago. One of the things they discussed was a "what if" scenario. that being if we had headed the warnings and put to sea for battle with the Japanese fleet. The War College came to the conclusion the the US faired much better as it was. We would likely have lost more men and ships would have been sunk in deep water and unsalvagable. -

Should People have to pay for no emergencey calls

Many departments are moving towards this concept. http://www.911dispatch.com/info/311_page.html We do not release fire department numbers because we want the calls to go to the 911 center not the station. Calling a station for a fire takes longer because we then have to tell dispatch and have then dispatch not to mention that engine may be busy on another call. Cobb has a non emergency line to the dispatch center that personel use. I would call this number while off duty if I saw a deer on the side of the road or some other minor issue. I am in hopes that we will soon have a true 311 l -

Animal control does not carry arms to put them down. PD usually has to come out to work the wreck anyway. Also animal control is not 24/7. This was a reasonable request. And was likely prioritized before it was handled. Dispatch will always ask you if you are standing by. Plus there is the off chance that the PD officer might be having venison tomorrow after he calls DNR. We have new unlock airbags. We can open the door usually in a couple of minutes. Kids / animals locked in a car are a given. No problem. Most unlocks take about 10 - 15 minutes from the time you call. -

That is for the dispatch center and such. Fire Tax pays for the Fire Dept while the PD comes out of the general budget, I believe. -

The medical false alarm question I can not answer. Those alarm systems do really crazy things all the time. We have a senior assisted living center behind 18. It was their policy to call 911 for falls because they did not want their staff lifting them and hurting their backs. So what part of assited living did this not fall under again? -

That was my station from 2002 til 2008.And yes they will. They may sell it, use it for something else or tear it down. I have not heard yet what. I survived the rat infestation, a leaky roof and mold in that station. The county bought the lot right next to it (other side of the gravel driveway). They were supposed to break ground in 2006 but other stations proved to have more pressing issues. Old 10 is now #30. It is located on Austell Rd. at Windy Hill. It has to be relocated due to the new extension and lack of a ramp. These guys can not safely park the truck on the ramp as it is now. -

Oh yeah... I forgot to tell you about the lady that called when I was in the PD. It came in as a domestic dispute between mother and daughter. I get there and "mom" tells me, are ya'll ready? It was a weekday too. "You need to tell my daughter that she can't spend the night at her friend's house tonight". The daughter was 13 as I recall. I did end up taking the daughter to juvenile though. There was a valid "runaway" warrant on her. That is a no questions asked and do not release to parental custody thing. Solo just for you... http://www.oddee.com/item_96669.aspx -
Should People have to pay for no emergencey calls

Officially NO, we can not. We answer the call given to us. I have and others have pulled themselves off one call to take a high priority call while having dispatch send another unit to the first. We have also swapped calls. We get a call on the north side of a territory while another call came in on the south side just after. The next available truck is coming from the northside. So we swap. Dispatchers do not do that for us. We use our best judgement on it and I have never heard of someone getting into trouble for it. Now on the PD side, they will hold a call that is less important until -

Abuse of the 911 system is really common. From the absurd "I need you to open this bottle of medicine for me because my husband is upstairs asleep and I do not want to wake him" to the young "lady" that is 9 months pregnant and has gone into labor and has no one to take her to the hospital. Neither are life threatening but I assure you the 2nd is VERY common in parts of Cobb. "A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an Emergency on mine". Regardless they are taking a valuable resource out of service when it may be needed for a true emergency. They also force us to respond emergency -

Yes I have/do. I also sometimes think as I am responding to a person down call that it would truly be ironic if the person in front of the big red truck, with the siren and flashing lights, that refuses to pull over to the side of the road were somehow related to the person that I was tring to get to. Also there are jurisdictions that have a nonemergency line to call. That would be nice here. You used to be able to call 311 for an ambulance. **** PSA **** There is no law that says you have to call 911 for an ambulance to take you or family member to the hospital for non life threa -

All stations have their "regulars". Most of the time we have no problems with coming out and helping. That person is generally a tax payer also. It is kind of frustrating to be out picking someone up off the floor when a house fire or major medical call comes in inside your 1st due territory. You really would be surprised at the number of vehicle unlocks we go out on. I honestly do not know how a lock smith stays in business anymore. We do have to follow our guidelines with them though. A child or animal locked in or the vehecle left running, medication in the car with keys. You leave your key -

I would much rather see funding and labor put into something more tangible that can be proven was done by man. That would be polution. No ifs no ands no buts. We did it. Now let's clean it up. We are in far greater danger of puluting ourselves out of a planet than we are of warming it up. Why is it no one wants to help that poor indian chief clean up the planet? Oh because it is not the cause celeb du joir. (sp) -
The web site says they are EMT and or Paramedic. I know that some departments will run with a level of First Responder but that is apparently not the case here. It did not say if the EMTs were Basic or Intermediate though. Cobb is EMT-I or better. It would not surprise me if Paulding had the same standard for EMTs.

You have to look at medicare this way. While we are young we can't use it and generally do not need it but we still make our "insurance premiums" into the system. It is all of us that pay in while not using it that make the policy premiums "affordable" for those that do use it. With all of us are in the "pool" without drawing benefits, that is what makes the program even close to workable. If it was just those over 65 that were paying into it, the premiums would be impossible to pay. All the rest of us are doing is "buying down" the premiums for the elderly that use the system.

I will not try to speak for Ppen but I think their post would have made more sense if they quoted this quote from Eym_serious... I think they were refering to that and not your post NJ.

I briefly worked part time at Home Depot. They even provide insurance for me as a part timer. Thanks, but I got it handled.

My insurance is mostly paid by the county. I put in some, but they pay the majority. The county is "self insured" and BC/BS is the administrator of my plan. The county has come right out and told us that it IS part of our EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION plan and their portion is listed under the "fringe benefits" section of my check stub. You are mistaken in this instance. But the point that I was trying to make is that many feel that this is an "intitlement" of some kind and the citizens taxes are used to provide this insurance to me. While their taxes are used to pay for this it is, none the less, par

That is typical. Most Fire /EMS units will beat the ambulance to the scene a vast majority of the time. The only exceptions that I have seen on a regular basis was when I worked at Cobb # 7 (Hicks and Hurt rd). Just a couple of miles from Cobb Hospital. There are always ambulances going in service from there and are generally close to that territory. Pucket and GA EMS in Powder Springs and Kennesaw respectively, usually have units in those areas and tend to be right on top of the Fire apparatus when they arrive.
