  1. For those who want to move but don't want to loose your email address - tere are a number of companies that offer inexpensive or free email addresses. go find one of the services (I wouldn't use Gmail or Yahoo for this - go a little less mainstream) and sigh up, then slowly move your email to that address.

I did that 20+ years ago with mail.com and still have the same address even though I've switched providers a few times. It costs in the neighborhood of $25.00 per year.

Yea, I signed up with Hotmail years ago and still use that one for my personal address over my bellsouth address.

  2. For those of you with UVERSE, I assume you are getting your internet through it. How is the internet service? I'm still on DSL and the Service level is sucking BIG Time. I'll have 5-10 second delays in web sites opening sometimes, like network interface ports are severely overloaded.

I'm wondering if AT&T is throttling the bandwidth available to DSL to try to push people onto UVERSE so they don't have to maintain multiple networks. So I ask if UVERSE acts the same way.

My wife has had her Bellsouth.net email addresses for 16 years now and doesn't want to change it, or I'd moved over to Comcast Internet already.

The Board of Commissioners Will Hold a Public Meeting on June 18, 2014

The Paulding County Board of Commissioners will hold a public meeting to hear a presentation by Ms. Liz Holtz, Staff Attorney for Alley Cat Allies. She researches policy Issues, and advises local governments on drafting legislation.

The Board of Commissioners and staff will meet with Ms. Holtz at 2:30 PM in the BOC Conference Room, located on the 2nd Floor of the Paulding County Administration Building, Watson Government Complex, 240 Constitution Blvd, Dallas, Georgia 30132. The public is invited to attend; however, there will be no public participation.

Ms. Holtz will make her presentation to the public at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria located on the 1st Floor of the Paulding County Administration Building, Watson Government Complex, 240 Constitution Blvd, Dallas, Georgia 30132. The public is invited to attend and ask questions/comment.

Elizabeth Holtz, Alley Cat Allies staff attorney, researches policy issues surrounding cats and advises local governments on drafting positive legislation. In 2013, Holtz published “Trap-Neuter-Return Ordinances and Policies in the United States: The Future of Animal Control,” the first comprehensive study of its kind. Holtz also frequently speaks to community groups and shelters about implementing TNR in their communities and helps shelters adopt policies that save cats’ lives. She has a long history of animal protection activism. Prior to joining Alley Cat Allies, she worked with organizations such as Compassion Over Killing, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, and the Nonhuman Rights Project. Holtz holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

I understand that the shelter has had a lot of animals dropped off during the recession, but wild cats are believed to be one of the major killers of native song birds in the US. Returning an invasive species to the wild to continue to disrupt the local ecosystem by killing off native species does not seem to me to a valid solution.

    Thoughts?

On another note, this was worth calling a special meeting of the BOC?

Home prices across metro Atlanta continued their robust, post-recessionary rise during the first quarter of the year, according to the S&P Case-Shiller Home Price Index released Tuesday. The 15.7 percent increase, compared to a similar period a year earlier, kept Atlanta ahead of the 12.4 percent uptick in home prices .

    The above from the AJC.

Now the BOC for the most part cut the county budget (and the School Board completely cut the budget) to make up for the falling property values in the last 6 years rather than raise the rate to keep funding at the same levels. We've enjoyed lower taxes (for the most part) during that time.

However, new assessments should be out in June as I recall. I suspect we'll see that 15% increase on that assessment. As I see it, that means for us homeowners, two things can happen, both of which cost us money:

    1) The county allows the rate to say the same, jumping the total taxes the same 15% or so. I'm not sure how the law reads on this, since we had a tax cut when the values dropped and the rate stayed the same, are they allowed to let it float back up to the income of 2008 without hearings? Anybody know?

    2) Even if both bodies cut the tax rate to keep the total budget the same, I suspect that we homeowners are going to own a larger percentage of the property value in the county than before. (I don't think commercial property is going up at 15% a year in value). If so, then our percentage of the taxes paid in the county will increase even with the budget the same. The increase won't be 15%, but it will be an increase.

Either way, be ready for property tax sticker shock in the fall. I think we're about to make up for the tax savings we've seen in the last few years.

Since two of the five commissioners are now lame duck, it will be interesting to see how the BOC approaches the new budget for 2015. They may find it much easier to raise them this year with only one facing an election in November.

THIS was why you never heard me whining about home pricing recovering.

  5. From the county website:

From May 1 to September 30, the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) issues a burn ban which prohibits all outdoor burning in Paulding County. You may direct questions or comments concerning the burn ban to the EPD.

If you want to burn all the limbs that dropped from this crazy winter, need to do it this afternoon/evening!

Small Campfires are permitted, no leaves or grass clipping may be burned. Must be in a ring or pit.

  6. A man was killed in Cartersville Saturday by a train.

A Cartersville man who was walking his dog along railroad tracks on Saturday afternoon was killed when he was hit by a CSX train.

Donald Eugene Brock, 44, was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident in the area of Sugar Valley Road near Cassville Road in Cartersville, according to Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap.

The train sounded its horn several times to warn Brock of its approach, but Brock did not respond, the sheriff said.

Deputies responded around 5:20 p.m. after a rail employee reported the accident.

    http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/cartersville-man-killed-by-train/nfJ2S/

    :(

I heard reports of another car being hit in Rockmart Saturday also. Didn't hear of any fatalities with that one thank goodness.

Why is it that people won't respect the train tracks? Is it because trains are so enjoyable that we don't think about what they represent? My son has seen many examples of people driving around the lowered guards and flashing lights trying to "Beat" the train. Do they not recognize that they put their life on the line doing that carp? You are placing your body in front of up to 20 *million* pounds of freight or so moving at 40 MPH.

    Why?

  7. Talked to my son who is a big Rail Fan about it. Unfortunately, none of the fans were around because of the time. Only picture posted right now is the damage to the Engine.

According to him, typical response would be that Acworth police calls the CSX switchboard, who patches them through to emergency operations, which then after finding out all the information, has to call the dispatch for the Acworth subdivision, which then had to figure out which train is approaching the area and warn them.

This time, the engineer got the message when he was at the other end of the city, doing legal track speed of about 40 MPH with around 9000 ft train of approx 12,000 tons.

He locked up everything he had and jumped for the crash bay. They just don't stop on a dime.

He heard that CSX road foreman was having fits because that locomotive was less than a month old. Nooooo, he couldn't get stuck in front of some old engine that needs to be retired, he damages a brand new multimillion dollar engine and puts it in the shop for weeks.

The rumor is that they have tried to close that crossing several times, but the church in the area complains each time because they don't want to have to drive around to the other crossings.

    Edited to add:

WSB has police video of the crash: http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/train-crash-blocks-downtown-acworth-streets/nfGSH/ He is really lucky the trailer hitch gave way and it didn't drag his truck like that last collision at that crossing.

  8. And just to clarify, the airport is here and I think we should make the best use if it. I would like to see small commercial flights. But the way it was done I'm beginning to believe was wrong.

Agreed, I want the airport to be a success and if a small commercial operation will do that fine. However, having the county spend (or guarantee) many millions of dollars on an operation that may or may not cover costs to be is questionable. Have the BOC/AA place their business plan out here and show us how this is a good deal for the county.

Besides, I still can't figure out why the rush. The economy and the tornado obviously had a serious impact on the revenue stream from the airport. A private field is still possible if we give it time for the business to grow. The FAA obviously thought a field was needed here or they would not have put so much cash into it.

This just looks too much like a rush job for me.

  9. I understand what he posted, and I do understand it has to be run like a business. And I still say my taxes are too high. However, if the county government leaders had showed some restraint and honesty previously, I might be a little more inclined to listen to what they have to say. As in, oh you HAVE to vote for the SPLOST or your taxes will go up. Then the VERY NEXT DAY after the SPLOST passed, they raised taxes anyway because "oops, we found an error". Other examples too numerous to go into here as well. When they start acting like responsible leaders, I will start treating them like responsible leaders. Until such time, I will continue to say NO.

As far as the general budget, I feel there has been a reasonable amount of restraint of spending since the administration change just after the economy crash. Have I agreed with *every* decision they have made in the budget? No, but we all have our sacred cows we don't want touched or want increased funding for. I realize I'll never be totally happy.

The 1.1 mil increase in the Fire Tax was probably the biggest increase, but since my Mother in Law is up and walking around thanks to the Paulding County EMTs that came out, I feel it's insurance money that is well spent.

  10. Found the 2014 Proposed PC budget on the govt Website. Did a quick search, but didn't see where it got discussed here.

Of course, it's subject to change up to it's approval, but right now, the rates are about the same.

County Bond..2.05 to 2.22 (slight increase)

County M&O...8.29 to 8.22 (Slight decrease)

Fire Tax.....3.10 to 3.10 (stays the same)

    Total.......13.44 to 13.54 (0.7% increase)

Since my value went down about the same percent, I guess it will be close to revenue equal for me this year. (Assuming this sticks)

That would be nice after the 17% hike last year.

Anybody get the Era paper can tell me what the advertised mill rate for the school system is? Wondering if it jumped any.

  11. Which reminds me of a comedy song I heard on the Dr Demento Show years and years ago...

From Proctor and Bergman's (Firesign Theatre alumni) "Give Us a Break".

And da steering wheel's got that squeak.

And the brakes on this car lemon

    Haven't lasted me a week."

    <then on to>

    "Day old, this car's a

    Day-ay-ay old.

    The battery's dead, yea

    already it's de-ad.

    It's a day

    it's a day

    it's a day

    it's a day

    it's a day-ay old.

    The spark plugs are crusted.

There's a crack in your head."

<after some commercial interjections, we have>

    "Walkin' down the road

with a piston in my hand.

    Johnnie, that's too bad,

    Johnnie, that soo sad..."

    "Don't Jamaica fool-a yourself, Johnnie.

We've got to fix it together.

    Everyone of us,

    together..."
