The Truth About Socialism

Recommended Posts

Mods - I'm posting this as a news article, and putting it in The Cafe. I realize certain people will probably make it political, so if you need to move it at some point, I understand.

A Facebook friend of mine, who is also a P'Commer (probably hasn't been here in awhile) posted this on Facebook because she is frightened by so many Americans embracing Socialism. She left Russia many years ago, and came here legally to become a Proud American and local business person. She's a hardworking lady and one of the nicest people I know.

She is not the author of the article, but coming from Russia herself, she says it's spot on.

I don't pretend to know much about the history of this, but I do know that socialism and communism are not the same. The article is saying that socialism is like a stepping stone to communism and that all socialist systems are oppressive. We all know that's not true. It also suggests that capitalism doesn't do these things and we all know that is not true either.

Here's a really interesting take by a thoughtful leftist a friend linked to fb:

Socialism is a component of Communism. Socialism is an economic system, while Communism is both an economic and political system.

While Socialism can exist, at least for awhile, without Communism; the latter usually develops at some point because a Socialist economy eventually fails and the government often converts to Communist rule to keep order. This involves government seizure of all personal property and subsequent distribution of resources in whatever manner the government deems necessary. And basically, all rights are taken away from the people.

The important thing to remember is that Socialism has NEVER succeeded long-term anywhere in the world. The length of time needed for it to fail is greatly determined by the level of resources a country has. Socialism eats up financial resources over time, so the fewer resources a country has, the sooner their economic system will collapse.

Venezuela is, perhaps, the most recent example of Socialism's failure. An oil rich country that was once the most wealthy in South America; Venezuela's economic system is in total collapse and it's people are starving. They have virtually no healthcare because there is no money to buy medicine and supplies. Their people are fleeing in droves and they are expected to lose 10% of their population this year.

In a shocking turn of events; Venezuela's president now admits that Socialism does not work.

How terribly tragic that a once-rich country had to be economically destroyed to learn that lesson.

Are we to be the next country to go into economic collapse because of Socialism?

Can you provide some examples of countries that were socialist and are now communist? I wouldn't say Venezula is socialist but run by a corrupt band of theives. When you say that socialism has NEVER survived long-term anywhere in the world, can you give some examples of that other than Venezula since that is an example of what corruption can do not socialism, and any system can fall to corruption.

I'm headed out the door to church, so any long discussion will need to be later.

Can you give me one example of a Socialist economy that has survived long-term? Since the answer is zero, that will be an easier way to answer the question.

You said that socialist countries usually become communist and I am challenging that statement.

You said socialist countries don't survive long-term and I believe that is wrong, too, because you can't give any examples of that.

You asked for examples of socialist countries that have survived and that list is long because the only countries that aren't socialist are those that are communist like Cuba or China or Vietnam, or those capitalist countries that are in complete disarray like Afghanistan. The USA is a socialist country because we have public utilities and police forces, a public educational system and things like that. I also don't think socialism is a component of communism like you said anymore than socialism is a component of capitalism. There are many degrees to socialism but pure capitalism doesn't exist except in places like Afghanistan.

Nevermind... it's pointless.

Because "Socialism". Because who's going to pay the bills when the middle class collapses? You end up with two classes, those that have money and those that don't.

What people don't understand is Socialism doesn't take from the rich and give to the poor. Socialism takes from the working class and gives to the poor. The rich stay rich, the working class works themselves into being poor by allowing the government (the rich) to tax them into poverty.

Well, I'm not rich, have never been. I'm not poor, but I have been. Pretty sure the left doesn't really understand poverty. Because "socialism".

Lenin was a Marxist before the Revolution. The direction he took surprised everyone, including himself.

Stalin was a despot and rumored to have poisoned Lenin for power.

Socialism was the premise of communism.

Now, I'll tell you why those of us who lived through it, had parents and grandparents live through it are skeptical of this Democratic Socialism that the leftist are so fund of. It doesn't mean that socialism will turn into communism but the fear is that it will be another state of despotism with a new label attached to it.

We were painted a very pretty picture of happy workers that share all the profits, have free healthcare and education. Literally painted pictures. On buildings, transportation, theaters, schools, hospitals, bus stops, you name it. All these smiling socialists farm and factory workers. Production and Mother Russia! We don't need middle and upper class because they are the root of ALL evil and take advantage of the poor working class!

Do you know that those middle and upper class people were promised to stay rich too if they supported the movement? Instead they got stripped of everything they owned and were sent to concentration camps in SIberia. That is if they were not executed.

So we already heard that tune that "rich will stay rich and socialism doesn't take from them".

Then started the persecutions of anyone that didn't fit by race, sexual orientation, education, level of compliance or usefulness.

Along these happenings came the great fame because the country was bankrupt and to bail it out Russia turned on her Sisters. Ukraine suffered the most.

To make sure the population complied, those who opposed were taken out of the equation by whatever means possible. Undermined in their position or simply killed. That didn't stop even in the 80's and 90's.

During the entire 70 years of communism people were subjected to daily brainwashing with propaganda on how everything was great, how hard we have to work, how happy we are to do so, how the West is the Evil along with all capitalists, how we have to put the welfare of Mother Russia first and how happy we are to do that, how rich the country is and how happy we are about that, and so on.

Meanwhile, we stood in lines for hours to get milk, butter, meat, fruits and vegetables and were lucky if we got a slice here and there. Family members would stand in lines in different stores from 4 am in hope of at least one of them to come home with food.

If you worked on the communist farm, you were checked on the way home to make sure you didn't steal even one grain of wheat. Convoys followed the trucks and every bag of sugar, grain, tea, etc etc was weighed before they left and when they arrived. They knew if you took even less then a handful of sugar out of that bag and could execute you on the spot for 1 teaspoon missing from the bag.

The healthcare was free and mandatory doctor check ups once a year are still in place in Russia. However, you have to still wait in line for a months to see any specialists. Government never told us what medicines can have side affects or what the risks are, you just took what they prescribed and went to wait your turn to see the specialist. You couldn't get a second or third opinion because you went to the doctor that was assigned to your neighborhood. And yes, they checked your passport for your current address, which under severe penalty had to be stamped with a permission to leave one area to move to another, permission to start a job or finish, and a permission to take a vacation.

I can go on and on with this but if you still don't see how strikingly similar many things are now in USA, then I'm sorry to say you are just as brainwashed as we were for years.

You get a healthcare that is forced upon you with a promise you can keep your existing plan and doctor and you get to pay for those less fortunate who can't afford it.

Then you watch a complete division of country and blatant spread of racism by the very president of our country.

Just recently you see how a made up accusation almost ruins the life and career of a politician just because he doesn't agree with the leftist agenda. And no, he's not the first or last but it's still fresh enough to see how far this was taken.

I'm not even going to start on Hillary but it's scary what kind of lies were flying out of her mouth during the campaign.

Our media is bought and spills propaganda just like the Russian radio used to.

And when I read some of these social democratic sites, I swear, they use the same verbiage as if they dug up old russian brainwashing material, translated it and changed a few labels.

So call me paranoid when I say I'm against socialism in any kind of form or draw your own parallel lines and similarities but never take for granted the lines fed to you by those who are in power and promising you the moon and the stars.

Oh and btw, how many "sleeper cells" did communist russian government send to USA during the cold war to teach socialism? A scary thought is that one of them could've been your elementary school teacher for all you know. Think about that one for a moment.

Since Socialism is a component of Communism, all Communist nations start out Socialist regardless of whether their form of government is Communist or not.

And when Socialism fails, the government has to change something. If they are lucky enough to be able to institute some capitalist elements into their economy, they might have a chance to recover. This is what both China and Russia have been doing over the last couple of decades. It's still not the best arrangement, but possibly enough to survive. To some degree, this is what Marxism is...a mixture of Communism and Capitalism, but it's the government who owns and/or controls business, not the people.

Here's a partial list of countries that have tried Socialism and failed https://www.reddit.com/r/Anarcho_Capitalism/comments/45rud0/list_of_failed_socialist_states_and_movements/

Here's some good reading on why Socialism ALWAYS fails https://www.hoover.org/research/why-socialism-fails

Good article on why Socialism is failing all over the world. https://panampost.com/carlos-sabino/2017/04/27/socialism-is-failing-all-over-the-world/

Another good article on Socialism failing https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2015/07/18/governments_keep_turning_to_socialism_even_though_it_always_fails_127435.html

I'm trying to NOT make this political, but one of our parties brands Socialism as "Democratic Socialism". Well, it's just Socialism. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....

This gets into some deep reading, but it explains in macroeconomics why Socialism won't work. It also references some Socialist governments and explains in detail why they have or will fail. https://courses.lumenlearning.com/zelixeco201v2/chapter/the-failures-of-socialism/

Finally, Peaches....the United States is not nor has it ever been a Socialist state. While it's true that we have a few Socialist elements that have been introduced into our economy, most of the problems we face today can be directly traced back to these Socialist elements. Welfare has destroyed certain fabrics of our society and it is one of the factors in our horrible national debt. And Welfare has created an entire segment of our population that has zero job skills, many of which are functionally illiterate, are being paid NOT to work even in a time when our country needs workers.

Republicans and their brand of cut throat conservatism killed America's middle class years ago. You've just been too busy hating the left to notice.

Please don't make this political.

Social Security has technically gone bankrupt many times, and we have to keep propping it up with borrowed money. Obamacare is bleeding money and even the bi-partisan OMB says it is not sustainable. Not to mention the fact that it was caused escalating costs and poorer healthcare service. Our public education system is a disaster! It's terribly expensive and American kids have fallen way behind other developed nations in education. I could go on, but hopefully you get the point.

As I have told you many times, mechanical engineering is one of my many skills, and I do own a company that provides those and other services. But it's hardly my only area of expertise. More importantly, I own multiple businesses. So another failed attempt from you to try and discredit me.

The "nonsense" I posted was well supported by multiple links. Links that I'm quite sure you did not bother to read. The one about macroeconomics is likely over your head, anyway.

You still are on the premise that socialism is a component of communism and that just is not so. Communism is an extreme form of socialism in an extremely large array of forms of socialism, just like the economy of the US is a form of socialism. You keep trying to use the pure economic version of socialism to mean all socialist nations and that is just not so. There are as many degrees of socialism as there are nations and that is what the macro summary was about. Never mind answering because there is no talking to someone who thinks they know it all. You're giving links to prove your argument instead of understanding the what the link is saying. All you're doing is stating your political ideas.

There comes the arrogance, saying I don't understand my own links. Wow! I bet you didn't even bother to read the multiple links I posted. And I bet you paid little attention to the lady above who lived under it before coming to the United States.

Here ya go. https://www.dictionary.com/e/socialism-democracy/

Communism is a branch of socialism. It’s a similar idea, where the community as a whole (or the state as a whole) own all of the property. In practice, though, it’s “a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.”

The biggest difference between Socialism and Communism is ownership of property. In Socialism it is believed that property should be publicly owned, while in Communism the state takes control of it.

Basically, bad and worse. But Communism has survived where Socialism has not, mainly because the government has the power to take what it wants and redistribute at their will.

You remind me of a 3rd grader trying to fake a book report on something he forgot to read.

I've provided multiple links to support my statements.

All you and Peaches can do is to say I'm wrong.

Until you can participate in this discussion on an adult level, please let the grown ups handle this.

You said that socialism is a branch of communisim. I said communism is a branch of socialism. Your own definition just said I'm right. It's not arrogance on my part when you didn't bother to read your own links. The lady who posted above was under Communisit Russia and no one said that was good. I didn't say it was good but you keep implying I did so I wonder if you even read what I'm posting. There are more socialist countries than communist nations that exist today. You're trying to confuse what is pure socialism and what we have in most countries.

Why because she's out pissing you ?

You see things very differently than I do.

I'm done with you for now. At least until I post more proof that Socialism is a failure. Of course, that is your greatest fear, which is why you try to disrupt threads.

Yea, I stay up night after night worrying what you are going to post on Pcom next. That's right and it's not just me, the whole GD county walks the floor in anticipation of what words of wisdom Paulding's AC man will bestow us with next.

Across the county politicians, first responders, educators and philosophers all wait with baited breath for your next post.
