gpatt0n
Disruptive change is naturally upsetting to everyone. Most people like stability and are willing to overlook, ignore or even deceive themselves if such self-manipulations will help them maintain the illusion of stability and the self-confidence that comes from it. That there are those who will exploit this tendency to self-delude for the sake of stability is human nature. The reality is that in a period of rapid, disruptive change, one of society's failings, especially in democratically, is the rules, norms and taboos of the previous period of stability erode in their effectiveness. Why? Not because they don't speak to the broad concerns of equity and justice, but because the laws simply fail to address issues in a relevant way. That opens the loophole that is based on the notion that if you don't break the law, you haven't done wrong. Data - Big Data - is one of those ways. It is a foregone conclusion that as a business, I have a right to collect information about my customers so that I can serve them. There are few restrictions on that data and its use. Collecting data from multiple sources of information, including public information, allows the compilation of complete dossiers on each of us. Here is a story of a company that not only knows few bounds, but is now offering services to folks like the LAPD that create 'pre-crime' suspects based on big data. The advice to those who are so targeted? Move away if you don't want to be stopped, frisked and jailed for literally anything from cops busting out your tail light to dubious suspicions. PLANITIR KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU I find this future chilling especially in light of the likely choice for SCOTUS to be nominated to join the conservatives who have already apparently taken a oath to support corporations (and their data collection and use) over citizens. No one who cast a Republican vote on this whole area of concern realized they were endorsing a surveillance regime in private hands for sale to the government and industry. pubby
Jamie Weaver
No one had the foresight to address technologys intrusion into our life. Yes, we need to expand privacy rights to cover our electronic footprint, but framing constitutional grey areas as political partisanship this early in the game is just Pubby being a democrat. You cannot in your wisdom (or lack thereof) say which way any SCOTUS will vote on constitutional rights to privacy. An informative article though... Thank you. - Jamie Edited July 8, 2018 by Jamie Weaver
