MUSIC GURU: Hiram’s Own Hometown Music Store

Perhaps one of Hiram’s newest best kept secrets in small business opened in early 2015 in Owen’s Point Plaza on Hiram-Douglasville Highway, a stone’s throw from Main Street in downtown Hiram.

The history of how Music Guru originated is a true entrepreneur’s dream, and one the vibrant and charmingly verbose Roxy is glad to share. The Obregons, devoted music enthusiasts, had stumbled upon the out-of-business music shop that previously rented the space, and inquired with the building owner regarding the store and its contents. Both having worked in retail management for years, Joe and Roxy found that starting their own business in an industry dear to their hearts was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. When asked why they chose a music store, Roxy quickly replied with, “We love music and get tremendous satisfaction from sharing our knowledge with the world!”

Not long after they took the final steps of opening, complete with merchandise, special orders, music lessons, instrument repair, and recording services, Music Guru flourished with patrons, making it possible—and necessary—to employ more instructors, offering a variety of lessons including guitar, bass, piano, violin, mandolin, banjo, dobro, and drums on subjects of music theory, reading sheet music, artist development, and recording. They have also added giveaways, sponsorships and events, which can be followed on their social media accounts. Guru Fest, a bi-annual outdoor music festival held in the open field behind the store, is an event with food, fun activities for kids, and, of course, lots of music! The next scheduled Guru Fest is in May 2016. Monthly open mic events are announced on the website, Facebook page and via signage in the store, and feature refreshments and local musicians.

Music Guru sells a plethora of instruments, including acoustic, electric, slide and bass guitars, percussion instruments, amps, band instruments and accessories, banjos, mandolins, violins, strings, keyboards, music themed jewelry and other accessories. They also have, on display, a guitar signed by members of the band, Goo Goo Dolls, along with a heartwarming story of its origin.

With plans to expand within the next 10 years, Music Guru would like to open two or more locations with the same small town appeal the original enjoys. As a personal recommendation—both of my daughters have had lessons at Music Guru—I can assure prospective students and parents that the lessons are age appropriate, fun, and a great bargain for the quality of instruction received. If you’re looking for knowledgeable, friendly help in selecting instruments, need repairs, or are interested in lessons, you won’t find a more pleasant atmosphere than Music Guru!

Music Guru’s philosophy: We know that music tunes the soul, as well as, expands the mind. “Keeping the world in tune,” is a fitting motto for your local Hiram music store!
