July 2014 guide to the five visible planets

Jun 30, 2014
by Bruce McClure in Tonight » Astronomy Essentials, Space

In early July 2014, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn are visible when darkness falls. Venus and Mercury appear in the east as darkness gives way to dawn.

Jupiter, Mars and Saturn all pop into view as soon as darkness falls in early July 2014. It’s not likely that you’ll mistake one planet for another. The three are in different parts of the sky and exhibit different brightnesses and colors. Jupiter, the brightest starlike object in the evening sky, sits low in the west at dusk and sets shortly after the sun. Jupiter disappears in the glare of sunset by the second week of July, while Mars and Saturn remain fixtures of the July evening sky all month long. As darkness falls on these July evenings, look for ruddy Mars in the southwestern sky, and for golden Saturn in the south to southwest. It’s easy to distinguish ruddy Mars from golden Saturn by color.

On key dates, let the moon help guide you to the evening planets. Jupiter sits low beneath the moon and Regulus after sunset on July 1. The moon swings close to Mars on July 5, and Saturn on July 7.

Venus, the sky’s brightest planet is still prominent in the eastern dawn sky throughout July 2014. In fact, dazzling Venus will remain the most brilliant starlike object in the morning sky until late October of this year, at which time it will shift over into the evening sky. The lovely waning crescent moon pairs up with Venus on the mornings around July 24. Watch for them.

Mercury, the innermost planet, becomes visible in the morning sky, starting around July 11. Let the moon and Venus help you find Mercury before sunrise.

Were you on your way to or from dance class?

Smartarse, I didn't even join a dance class yet.

Hope you're ok!

I'm okay, and Ragdoll is okay also. She sat in the backseat guarding the pizza. LMBO! Thank you for asking.

How am I supposed to know that?

Glad to hear you are okay though.

It would have sucked if your foot got hurt and you couldn't dance (when you do join a class).

You should try tap (nigel on sytycd raves about it and says it is a dying style).
