TX Sportscaster's take on Micheal Sam.

Recommended Posts

In case you missed it, what with the storm of the century and all, Micheal Sam, college's best defensive player come out of the...closet?...locker room?...well, he came out and said he was gay this week.

Here is an interesting take on it by a Dallas, TX reporter.

He makes some interesting points, whether you agree with his final statement or not.

I don't care what (or who) he does in his bedroom, can he rush a quarterback?

And at the same time I wonder why gay people are impelled to inform everyone of what they like to do in their bedroom. It reminds me a lot of this:

er

That is one smart man, thank you for posting this. Criminals are fine. Drug addicts and dealers. Rapists.  Who a person sleeps with is an issue somehow? RIDICULOUS!!

On the other hand though, I will never understand why people feel the need to say anything about their sexual preference, gay or straight. I have never once thought about walking into a room and announcing that I sleep with a man. Who a person sleeps with has no bearing on the kind of person they are, how they treat people or even how they play football. What does who you snuggle up with in the dark have to do with anything? Why is it ever mentioned at all?

Well, he's obviously too smart for the Hollywood scene. I love Morgan Freeman.

There had already been speculation about his sexuality, so I think he came out to put speculation to rest, so he could concentrate on football. Questions of sexuality are addressed in pre-draft interviews and this way, he isn't covering anything up.

I seriously doubt that anyone with a half a brain would ask anyone about their sexuality in a "pre-draft interview." That would have them in hot water rather quickly. But I'll play along with that concept for a minute. So Robin Roberts has about as good a job as anyone can have in television. Why would she feel the need to tell everyone that she is gay?

It appears that in the gay world this is the trendy thing to do. Seems to be a need for attention because 99.9% of the world could not possibly care less.

My take on all this? (Not that anyone cares).. Tebow professes his love and faith in Jesus and he's ridiculed. Sam comes out as gay and he's a "hero". Really???

And my opinion (not that anyone other than me cares) is they both should just shut their damn mouths and play football. They are in the "public eye" for one reason. Football. Tebow sucked at football. Maybe the other guy ............... I won't go there.

["99% of the world COULD care less"]

feelip -

So only ONE percent doesn't care about this at all? Speculative opinion-percentages aside, how could you possibly know anything about the social dynamics of being gay? Have you discussed with ACTUAL gay people why they need to come out? Wouldn't that be the proper place to begin, rather to engage in speculation based on ignorance? (like this: "It appears that in the gay world...")

I think that the answer lies in "intolerance". You can't just allow them to express their lives in their own terms. You have to know why they do what they do? Why can't you just accept people for who they are? This would be a bit like questioning why truckers have to have those mud-flaps with a sexy female silhouette on them. Likely, this is an expression of THEIR sexuality, but do you ever ask about THEM and why they have to display THEIR sexuality in this way? <===== Rhetorical question, because you have an intolerance for gays and an acceptance of heterosexuals who flaunt their brand.

I am not intolerant. I just don't give a damn.

Since you asked, I think the silhouettes on mudflaps are pretty damn stupid too.

How utterly ridiculous to compare the Tebow situation to Michael Sam being gay. Tebow made a SHOW of his christianity on the field and it's for his on the field histrionics that he was rightfully ridiculed. Sam has made NO such on-the-field dramatic show of his sexuality. It occurs to me that their situations were done for OPPOSITE reasons. Tebow made his show a DISTRACTION from what should have been his focus. Sam only made the disclosure to KEEP from it being a distraction if the issue came up during the season.

One person was making an on-the-field spectacle of himself and was promoting his brand in that way. The other was simply being honest and upfront about who he was OFF the field. It was the only fair thing to do, given the circumstances.

So does Sam want his own private shower and locker room? Since you seem to be the resident expert on how gays think I figured you would know.

If the boy can tackle a quarterback I really don't care what he does with him once he gets him down.

"....his own shower and locker room"? What are you talking about? You DO know that there have always been gay football players, right? And that they've always shared locker rooms and showers? In this context can you see how your comment was nonsensical?

Did you see Tebow play? He didn't start the faux-praying thing in the pros! Praying needn't include prayer-posing. The prayer-pose was Tebow's "signature move" and it was something, from all accounts, that he did during the games, but not during practice! He didn't throw a TD pass in practice and prayer-pose! He did it for the cameras, as a way of promoting his brand!

I only discuss my sex life with those who ask......no one ever asks. :(

Ok, one person did, but they fell asleep before I was through.

Just in case you were going to ask, I never put it in writing.

(it is sad enough hearing it, much less seeing it in print)

I suspect many teams who need a star defensive player will pass on Michael Sam because of the potential media distraction as well as potential team backlash. Football is a team sport, but when one player gets all the focus, it takes away from the total team effort.

HA! Tell that to RG3, Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, and all the other attention whores in the NFL and all of professional sports. Not to mention the fans that worship them.

What is confusing is that Tebow sucked and wasn't gay and Sam doesn't suck and is gay. Is Sam faux-gay?

I really wish my bold key worked!!!! But anyway, I agree about Robin Roberts too. I think she's a great lady, but why is it necessary to actually come out and say you're gay, Lara Spencer has never felt the need to profess her heterosexuality. Sam Champion, the weather guy is gay, but we only know that by the way he lives his life.......with a male partner. But I never heard some grand announcement pertaining to such.

It just seems like the thing to say and in reality, who really cares? Not me.

Another thing that is ridiculous is the idea that other players will feel uncomfortable around him. Who cares what other players feel, that's their own issue. People seem to have the misconception that gay people lust after every same sex person that they run into. That's bull. I'm around men ALL THE TIME and the only one I EVER want to sleep with is my husband, my partner. Gays are no different, don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are gays who would sleep with anything breathing, but there are straight people who will do the same thing.

It's absurd that the issue is ever broached.

Who the hell cares and why is this news?

I don't care. I just find it funny that is exactly the plot line from a Necessary Roughness episode.

Maybe this is some how related to getting the show picked up with another network. They did leave us hanging big time from the last season.

All the time? REALLY? I could see a different naked man everyday for a month and it still doesn't mean I'd want to have sex with him. The man can play football from what I've heard,(I don't really care one way or the other)and if an NFL team that wanted him on their roster before this admission passes because of his sexual orientation, they're idiots and I sincerely hope that whoever does draft him trounces on every other team they play.

I am trying to understand where (and why) the line is drawn. So if it is okay for "openly gay" men to be in the shower with the rest of the team of straight men, then why isn't it okay for straight men to be in the shower at the gym with women?

By "all the time" I mean every day after practice and after every game.

If your attitude is that it doesn't matter about a person's sexual orientation, because it's that person's business and nobody else's, then why do you have difficulty with the individual no longer living a lie and "coming out"? How, when, or if they choose to disclose this information should be their personal business. Let's remember, too, that this is about the information getting out on a person's own terms, instead of it being spread by the tabloids. Think that nobody cares about who is gay in sports? If nobody cared, then this would not be an issue. It is an issue, because there are people starving to get into other people's business. Some people are pervs who spend way too much time imagining the sex that other people are having. Growing up, we all saw gay people teased and picked on and snickered-about. They had a rough time of it, even those who were popular. It can't be easy. I'm willing to cut them a little slack when it comes to dealing with their sexuality. I understand that there will be people who won't cut them any slack, just like there will always be bullies and haters. But if a celebrity wants to come out instead of a tabloid press breaking a story to make millions from the disclosure, I'm fine with the individual telling his/her own story.

What I'm wondering is "Why do you spend time thinking about other people showering in a locker room?" I think that it's not necessary to further characterize people who need to visualize such things!

A common football phrase, used to describe a hard tackle, is "stick 'em".

If Sam says he is going to "stick" the quarterback...........

Oh dear, I can think of quite a few other football sayings that may have to be changed.

I think we agree that this isn't news and it's sad that the media is making such a big deal about it. If they didn't act like he had the plague or worse, more attention could be focused on his football playing ability and not who he's smoochin'.

The only reason it was talked about and made an issue ... and I'm talking about Tebow too ... is that someone in the press thought highlighting it would be a story. Judging from the comments - and it makes little or no difference what they are - it remains newsworthy.

I will add that the reason any of them are considered by the reporter to be newsworthy is because either one or both of those stories compliment the 'conventional wisdom' or conventional narrative or contradict it.

In the case of Tebow, it compliments the narrative that says that religious types are ostracized ... while Sams sexual choice goes against the narrative that football players play football to get the women. (Actually more true for basketball players ... ask Wilt the stilt ... although Broadway Joe did have a few conquests.)

We all long for the day when the discussion is more on the vagaries and suggested reforms of the fractional banking system, but that is not considered near as exciting as a gay guy in the shower.

I think he outed himself before he was outed by the local media who already knew. I also thing he did it so he wouldn't have to carry the baggage around of worrying about being "caught". Hopefully, it will be a brief distraction and his ability on the field will be the thing that matters.
