Paulding County Board of Commissioners new law firm

Recommended Posts

In the 1st Board meeting with three new commissioners on the Board, the County's legal counsel Lani Skipper has been let go (fired) and replaced by the old law firm which had previously been fired by the old Board. Talley, Richardson & Cable attorney Jayson Phillips is now the lead counsel for the Board.
Commissioner Ron Davis was visibly upset by this move to let Lani Skipper go after 20 faithful years of service, but his concerns were pretty much ignored by Commission Chair Carmichael. The board voted 4-1 to fire Lani Skipper. (Ron Davis opposed).

I do get it that legal counsel serves at the pleasure of the Board and can be replaced with or without cause, but I'm not particularly happy with the selection of Talley Richardson & Cable.

Your thoughts?

Elections have consequences. On this specific topic, the county attorney must have the confidence of the chairman and other members of commission. Obviously, Ms. Skipper had the confidence of the Todd Pownall commission. I do know that Jayson Phillips has as many years in the position as Ms. Skipper and was more trusted by the majority.

Interesting you referred to the prior board as the Todd Pownall Commission as if that's an insult. Would it be correct that Todd didn't mail you a Christmas card?

I'm sure there are some campaign contributions somewhere that help explain it. The good ol' boys are back in town!

I'm not particularly excited the Firm of Talley Richardson & Cable was chosen without a bid process / RFP.

This just smells like the good ol' boys are about to put the Jesse James to us all... and it won't be long till 737's are landing here in Paulding County.

Being that there are probably less than 5 attorneys in the county that have the experience and credentials in that very narrow area of practice, it doesn't surprise me that there was no bid process.

And, given that the previous BOC has spent millions of dollars on unnecessary legal fees, I've wondered about the qualifications of Skipper to not try to keep the Chicken World 4 under control.

Well it appears 3/4 of the the Chicken World folks as well as Skipper have all been booted off the payroll. I'm just wondering how soon it will be until the Airport will be again a political hot potato. The sound of 737's landing in Paulding makes me cringe.

Actually, takeoffs are a lot noisier. 8)

As I've said several times previously..NONE of the Part 139 application had anything to do with actual ticketed passengers. It was all about getting a security certification so that an international aircraft manufacturer could build a plant and create some JOBS!!! Two different people who were on the airport authority board told me this. The possibility of Allegiant actually having a schedule in and out of SCF was somewhere between slim and none...and Slim went fishing. It was a diversion to keep other facilities from bidding against SCF for the French manufacturer to build on their facility. Now, whether that was a good negotiation tactic, I don't know.

A much worse case scenario would be that HJIA decides to build freight handling facilities on their 9900 acres and use SCF for the UPS,,FedEX, DHL traffic. 24-7-365 in the air and on the ground up and down 278.

I'd be interested seeing long term planners showing an international aircraft manufacturer or other heavy industrial commercial manufacturing facility adjacent to SCF. You'd need a heavy rail spur to deliver components to and from a manufacturing facility adjacent to SCF and in my view, that would be cost prohibitive. I still think it's smoke and mirrors. I just don't trust this Board to look out for anyone other than themselves. Perhaps you could enlighten us on why booting out the chicken world guys was a good move for Paulding County. I've previously mentioned my wife grew up in Clayton County and HJIA has ruined any quality of life around Riverdale, College Park, East Point, etc. I don't want Paulding County to turn into Riverdale.

I think the issue in Nov. 2018 was that the chicken world guys, as you call them, were in the pocket of the same folks who, as you say, ruined any quality of life around Riverdale, College Park and East Point. The court records show that they were writing ordinances, marshaling and directing campaigns (in 2014) and basically managing, as best they could, Silver Comet Field to the benefit of HJIA.
