4k and "smart" features are pretty much standard these days.  Just helped my mother-in-law get one last month.  Get minimum of 120hz (240hz better) refresh rate.  I think there are only 2 panel suppliers - Samsung or LG - for all the different brands.  Costco has good pricing as well as 2 year warranties.  Buy with a premium credit card for 1-2 year additional warranty on top of what comes from the manufacturer.  Personally I like Vizio.  I have several Vizio units in the house but my main unit is 55 in. Panasonic.  My M-I-L ended up with a LG model from Costco.  It is very nice and has great picture, but I did not care for the user interface when I was setting it up for her.  Samsung carries a price premium but I believe they probably have higher standards for their panels.

I think most TV’s now are smart TV’s.

I have a Samsung upstairs that’s at least 15 years old. It’s been a good one. I have a Samsung smart TV in my bedroom but the rest are Visio from walmart. All smart TV’s and you can’t beat the price. Our really large one is a Vizio with a great picture.

Historically, Samsung has been the most reliable. However, every brand has had their lemons.

Be sure to check the ratings of any model you're considering on various websites Best Buy, Amazon, New Egg, etc all have ratings on their web pages. Consumer's Reports can be a good resource.

The problem with smart tv's is the apps expire and only some company's will update. Visio is one that won't

update.  If you want smart just buy a plug in such as roku because it is cheap and when it no longer updates

you can toss it and buy a new one.   I went through this with Viso for several months before I gave up and bought

a roku device.    Also couple years ago we tried two different visos and couldn't get them to connect to

the net even after spending hours on the phone.  Took both back and bought a LG.  Brought it home and

hooked it up and it came up saying updating with out me doing anything.  Will never buy a visio again.

Dollar value is Vizio all the way. My opinion on the best to buy overall is Samsung. Their one of the best to start with and tend to stay that way the longest.
You've already heard about refresh rates and all that. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the quality with which the tv produces the color black. That sounds counter intuitive I know, but it's amazing the difference it makes in the quality of the picture. The last time I was doing the research to buy one, that led me to go with plasma, even with the downsides. That's not an option anymore. Just might want to keep an eye out for it as you do your reading.
Smart features are just one more thing to go wrong with the set. The same thing can be accomplished with a box or stick that are really cheap and now are 4k compatible.
Good luck.

I have a 55 in Element in the living room and a 32 in Vizio in my bedroom. Both are Black Friday deals from Walmart and I have not had a single problem. The 55 in is 3 yrs old and the 32 in is about 5 yrs old.

Now I am getting my other Amazon Fire stick today so I can get my $20 a month streaming cable in my bedroom and be done!

Thanks for all the advice...  we were leaning toward Vizo or Samsung,  we would not use the smart part of the tv as for as Roku, fire stick, internet etc... we just want a good tv that shows a good picture   and will hook up to regular antenna, we do not have cable, just internet.. we do not watch a lot of tv, which i have read a lot of tv's come with  Roku, Netflix etc...

Here is a good deal, but refresh rate is only 60hz so watching sports would not be at its best - $279 for 55 in.
