 Double fatality wreck atPCHS gets speeder 20 year sentence

The homicide by vehicle casethat pointed the finger at Sarah Elizabeth Dowdy, 24, asresponsible for the death of a Paulding County High footballstar has resulted in the woman's conviction and sentencingto 20 years, ten years to serve, today.

On June 17, 2015, three Paulding County young people, JanealPriester, her brother Joshua Priester and friend NickWright, set out from the Priesters’ home in Dallas to visitthe Priesters’ mother in the hospital; they drove to the endof Old Villa Rica Road in Dallas Georgia, where itintersected with Highway 61 near Paulding County HighSchool.

As the driver, Janeal, approached Highway 61, and turned onto the roadway, her vehicle was struck by a southboundvehicle driven by Sarah Elizabeth Dowdy traveling in excessof seventy-five miles per hour in a 55-MPH zone.

Janeal Priester and Nick Wright were killed and JoshuaPriester was seriously injured and immediately hospitalizedafter being air lifted to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

The case was initially presented to the Paulding JudicialCircuit District Attorney’s office as a misdemeanorvehicular homicide. However, after a thorough review of themeticulous report submitted by the Georgia State Patrol,additional examination by the Paulding Judicial CircuitDistrict Attorney’s office Investigators, and there-interviewing of witnesses, an indictment charging twocounts of Homicide by Vehicle in the First Degree, O.C.G.A.§ 40-6-393(a), speeding, serious injury by vehicle andreckless driving was handed up by the Paulding County GrandJury on July 13, 2016.

This case was tried before a jury in Paulding Superior Courtover a four day period beginning August 28, 2017, byPaulding Judicial Circuit Senior Assistant District AttorneyMatthew Rollins. The State called ten witnesses and tenderedover 300 exhibits.

The Defendant called only one witness. The jury returnedguilty verdicts on all five counts of the indictment onThursday, August 31, 2017. Sarah Dowdy was sentenced totwenty years, with ten years to be served in confinement.

Miss Dowdy was taken into custody immediately after theverdict was returned. Paulding Judicial Circuit DistrictAttorney’s office personnel who worked tirelessly to bringjustice to these victims included Senior Assistant DistrictAttorney Matthew Rollins, Janette Cox, Victim-WitnessAdvocate, and former Senior Assistant District AttorneyLuana Nolen, among others according to a release by DickDonovan,  District Attorney for Paulding's JudicialCircuit

This case sounds eerily familiar to the case of an off duty GSP officer that killed the teens while speeding at 70 mph. Except for one thing he went scott free.

This case sounds eerily familiar to the case of an off duty GSP officer that killed the teens while speeding at 70 mph. Except for one thing he went scott free.
