Kindergarten teacher arrested for  a gun in  Shelton Elem classroom

Melanie Bullard (Paulding County, GA) Melanie Bullard, 39, a kindergarten teacher at Shelton Elementary, was arrested for having a gun after a search for alcohol led to the discovery of a loaded semi-automatic pistol in her purse under her desk. Ms. Bullard at present is in the Paulding County Jail with no bond set as of yet.

On March 30, 2017 at approximately 12:00 pm administrators at Shelton Elementary were alerted by a staff member that one of their teachers possibly had alcohol on her breath.

At that point, Paulding County School District officials contacted the School Resource Officer (SRO) and launched an investigation into the incident. When the SRO administered a portable alco-sensor evaluation to the teacher, she tested positive for alcohol.

Per their policy, an additional evaluation was conducted a short time later which also resulted in a positive outcome. At that point, school district personnel began a search of the classroom and adjacent areas to try and locate any possible open containers of alcohol.

During that search, they discovered that the teacher had a loaded semi-automatic pistol in her purse. The purse was located on the floor underneath the desk which was within her classroom. The SRO then took possession of the pistol and officials continued their investigation.

The teacher has been identified as Melanie Bullard (W/F 39 YOA). Bullard is a Kindergarten teacher at Shelton Elementary and was charged with the following offenses: - Possession of a Weapon on School Property (M) - Reckless Conduct (M) Bullard was booked into the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and is currently being held without bond.

She obviously needs help. I can't tell you how irate I would be if this was my kids teacher. All it would take is one nosy or bored kid and there could have been a horrible tragedy. There is NO excuse for her to be that careless in a room full of 5 year olds.

Thanks.

Funny that her arrest does not show on Sheriff's website. Guess they do choose what they put on there.

It bothers me more than the gun was in an unsecured area under her desk than the fact that she had one.  And, if I were an elementary school teacher, I would probably drink heavily too.

Guess that's why teaching isn't for everybody.

I have reservations about guns on college campuses.  In elementary schools?  If I were a parent, there is no way I would be ok with that, especially considering she was under the influence.  Just terrible judgement on her part no matter how you look at it.

And if some terrorist with a "cause" had picked Shelton as a target,  we might be calling this lady a hero.

I guess you haven't been to Detroit recently?  Or, Newark or East St.Louis or Gary, IN, or Stockton, CA?

Not unless she sobered up first....I agree with the poster who says she needs help. Part of that would be getting her out of the classroom until she had her problem under control.
