Ok...So I got tired of having fruit flies hovering over my fruit basket so I do this every summer and it seems to work pretty well and it's made with stuff you probably already have.
Get a small dish--like the size and depth of a tuna fish can--and fill it about halfway with either a white wine or white grape juice. Drop one drop of dishwashing detergent in the center just so the surface tension is broken. (Won't work without dish detergent.)
The flies are drawn to the wine (I found wine works best) and go in for a taste and slide in. There have been times that I've got up in the morning to see many, many of them in the bottom of the dish.
Try it. It's safer and cheaper than insecticide. Just change it out every so often because...yeah..it looks yucky after while.
Just thought I'd pass it along.
