There always seems to be a certain amount of people out there that can figure out a way to part other people with their hard earned money. Property owners and consumers looking to rent should watch out for the latest scam in real estate; to highjack a legitimate rental property advertisement, pose as the owner, and offer the property with a rental price and deposit terms that are just too good to be true. The scam artist typically will attempt to do everything via the internet or phone and get someone to put down a deposit.
I received a call this morning from a consumer that told me of finding a rental home in Cobb at a rate below market. The deposit was only $500 and needed to be sent to an account in Nigeria. The story was the owner lost his job and had returned or was returning to Nigeria. Always meet with an owner or the owner's real estate agent, if any, at the home before paying anyone any deposit.
