Laptop Users ---Please Do This! :)

Now, many people are aware of this already but for those who didnít get the memoÖ :D you should take the time to help yourself and us computer repair technicians.

On the bottom of most laptops is a sticker represented in below (Good Sticker). Now, the name may be different but what counts the most is the Product Key. If that key is worn off you may find a future computer repair to be expensive, difficult, or impossible.

There are not too many tricks us computer repair folks have to find your product key on your computer and when we canít get that product key we canít repair or install your operating system which means that you could be looking at a very expensive (even by our low prices) repair. :)

Many unfortunate people have had to re-purchase their operating system at retail price which costs big.

So, take the time and protect that sticker now with a piece of clear tape.

Of course if you find that your product key is worn off youíll find future repairs will be difficult. And as far as I am aware the manufactures and Microsoft are not providing new product keys. Perhaps under warranty they might.

Possible Solutions: Have the original recovery CD/DVD's that came with your computer which usually has the product key built into the recovery CD/DVD.

You can purchase these recovery CD/DVD's from the manufacturer but they MAY not contain the important product key so you would have to ask. (Usually don't)

Bad Sticker (Product key was still visible in this case but many are not) Operating system version is worn off.

Good Sticker (Operating system and product key still visible.)

Good luck everyone!

Great advice Steven. I have also found a program called "Belarc Advisor" helpful in preserving product keys. Once the program is installed and ran it produces a snapshot that contains information about the computer and the software installed. Along with the product keys, it also displays hardware information such as model numbers. The program can be downloaded here: http://www.belarc.co...e_download.html

for us computer dummies....after we download then what? Is the info saved on their site or do we back up it on a disk? so if our computer crashes and we have to format and start over then can we access this?

You would want to take the saved file and put it on a CD/DVD, USB flash or something so that it could be viewed by your computer technician, if needed.
