Longtime professor and coach Walt Attaway passes away

 

Walt Attaway, longtime professor and coach at Shorter College,

passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, after a brief illness. Arrangements

are incomplete at this time.

 

Attaway served as an instructor and later an assistant professor and

coordinator of the health and physical education program at Shorter

College for more than 41 years. He coached men's tennis for more than

40 years and coached the Lady Hawks tennis team for more than 25 years.

 

During his time as coach, Attaway led the Lady Hawks to more than 350

wins and earned the title of the winningest coach in the NAIA for men's

tennis with over 750 wins. He was inducted into the NAIA Tennis Hall of

Fame in 2001, the Shorter College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002 and into

the Rome-Floyd County Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. Attaway was also

named GACC Coach of the Year for 1999-2000 and ITA/Wilson National

NAIA Coach of the Year. He served on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association

Board of Directors as the NAIA representative for women and was appointed

NAIA Region 13 Tennis Chairman.

 

Prior to Attaway's time at Shorter, he served as superintendent of parks and

recreation for Rome and Floyd County.

 

Attaway leaves behind a wife, Belvina Hall Attaway, and a son,

Walter Newman Attaway III.
