  1. I'm really wondering why? Is there a perception that the student population has changed? (it has, but so has everyone else's) Is it because Mr. Freeman is at East now? (that happens at schools as well - and quite frankly, I've been impressed with Mrs. Cooksey's decisions so far). I've been very impressed with the staff and their background - how many have degrees in their field in addition to education certifications and advanced degrees. Given that south in the past had a higher than average pregnancy rate, I'm not sure I'd send my daughters there. ??? And, why is she moving? That
  2. I've had it twice. Hubby had it so bad that the ER doc had never seen a case so bad in 20 years and he's still dealing with residual pain about 6 years later. It's not something to mess around with.
  3. i wish this were always true. Unfortunately, a close friend who is a very involved parent with a student with some diagnosed learning disabilities and other physical disabilities due to CP found that one of our local high schools did everything in their power it seemed to put up barriers to his success including barely skirting the law in some cases. If they had the time and energy, they probably could get some monetary compensation for their experience last year. But, their solution for their family and lives was to school choice their student (and his rising freshman younger brother) to a
  4. Both of my kids are school choiced to Hiram. My oldest is now a sophomore at Virginia Tech with a 3.20 in Computer Engineering last semester while also in ROTC, the military color guard, and he's gone back to cheering this semester. My youngest is a junior at Hiram, is in 4 AP classes, and has hopes of also going to VA Tech or another D1 school to play soccer. I would not send my kid willingly to PCHS. I know - there are families that have a great or good experience. But, the family's stories that aren't having a great/good experience are HORRIBLE. There seems to be no middle ground.
  5. I'm a fan of Viva Mexico at Macland and Lost Mountain. Local family and good food!!! I agree about La Parilla in Powder Springs - it's not as good as it once was. I like the one at 120 and Barrett Pkwy though.
  6. That's not true either. But, a few sensational stories about the bad apples sell alot more newspapers than the feel good stories. It's all about perspective. What I find funny is that we are so quick to criticize someone else's mistakes or short comings but never evaluate and embrace our own. We all have faults and weaknesses.
  7. NOOOOO!! He's always so pleasant and happy. This is so sad for us!!
  8. We use Tina - my parents use Tina - I recommend her highly!! She straightened out the mess that our previous accountant created and then wouldn't finish before the filing deadline.
  9. Had this happen to me while dealing with my mom having appendicitis in another state with my nearly new to me explorer. My mechanic said that if it's not flashing and it's running fine, just wait until I stopped and check all the fluids. If it starts flashing or starts running funny, stop immediately. In my case, when I got it home and he pulled the codes - it was something to do with the evap system in the gas tank.
  10. Guard Dad - that's kinda our feeling. The other piece to this is that he's never driven something that WASN'T 4wd or AWD. But, it does add to the complexity of the vehicle and often to the maintenance costs. I'm going to keep looking - I'm leaning towards a 4wd. It's just that they are harder to find in the south. And, the ones that I have found - are from up north and full of rust on the underbody. I have one I'm going to go look at today. Cross your fingers.
  11. We are looking for oldest a early 2000's xterra with decent mileage (100k-150k). He goes to college in Virginia so the potential (probability) for bad weather is there. But, he's on a walking campus and doesn't have to drive to get to class. He does need to drive to cheer practice and with his color guard duties to a limited degree. It seems that folks that own these vehicles really like them and hold on to them. The ones that are for sale, so far (as evidenced by the fact that we haven't bought one), are either from up north and rusted, way, way overpriced, or way too many miles with
  12. Try the West GA Vehicle on FB. There are some sedans on there that seem to be very reasonably priced and solid cars (if they haven't been abused).
  13. Sound Guy - I would agree that turf is harder on their bodies. My son is a goalkeeper - he just spent the last 6 days playing on turf and he's as banged up and scraped up as he can be. But, we do need to balance the turf with the care needs of the grass. And, there's also the factor of the consistent playing surface. I wonder if the difference between a high school turf field and a high school grass field would even out because of the fact that the turf is an even consistent field and the grass is - well - who knows what.
  14. I plan to join when I get back from my trip to New Mexico. The convenience and the cost are definite pluses. I've lost 37 lbs so far - now it's time to start firming everything up.
  15. My mom went in for that exact set of procedures. She ended up having alot more repair work done. That was 12 years ago, and she's still going strong. One of the best things she's ever done for herself. ! DO YOUR THERAPY!! Don't skimp out. Don't skip sessions. Go to the therapist (even if they say you could do it at home) and do what they tell you (no more, no less). I know that PT can be expensive. But, I promise you - it's the best money you'll spend. My mom has put several PTs kids through college at this point. But, I swear to you - it's well spent. If you can get orders to
  16. No, ma'am. A scientific theory is a reasonably logic explaination of observed events. It is NOT proven by overwhelming evidence and information. That's why it's a theory and not a scientific law. There are many many scientific theories that are wrong or inconsistent with the evidence that we observe or deduce. And, I'm sorry, a 22 year old with a science education degree is in no way ready to talk with me about climate change. Most PhDs in climatology, geology, etc. can't speak with any certainty on the subject. Lucky for me, I know who my student's science teachers are going
  17. It's funny. Most scientists (educated beyond bachelors degree), and especially Judaeo/Christian believing scientists of advanced education, would tell you that evolution and creationism go hand in hand. The science behind global warming/climate change is so all over the place - I wouldn't cite it to anyone. And, as soon as you cite something, shortly thereafter - information comes to light that calls into question the data. Now, I don't disagree with the basic tenets of how to fight global warming on a personal basis (minimize fossil fuel usage, recycle/reduce waste stream, etc.). But,
  18. It is in fact illegal - it impedes the flow of traffic in the event of an emergency. We only occasionally have an issue with this when the neighbor across the street parks directly at the bottom of our driveway. But, usually, a quick conversation takes care of that. And, I believe that when you do park on the street - you must park with the direction of the flow of traffic as well.
  19. We've put him on the prayer list at church, and he's on my whenever prayer list. I truly pray that he gets better. I hate that this has happened to him.
  20. No ma'am. You have it backwards. The milestones are the replacements to the crct and the eocts in some cases. They were only given at the end of the year. The milestones were given completely on the computer. The slo (student leaning objective) was given at the beginning and end of the course (depending on a traditional or block class). The slo tests were given via scantrons (performance assessments were not). Yes. In this county, the slos were given as the final exam. One to get the students to realize the seriousness of doing well and second to eliminate one more test they would hav
  21. SLOs were given at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year. They are a measurement of growth. So - what is looked for is that if a student made a 20 at the beginning - how well do they do on the same exact test at the end of the year? They were written by a group of teachers that are outstanding in their subject area (do you really want someone not teaching the material writing this test?). And, no, the teacher hasn't seen it because then they can teach to the test (isn't that something that we complain about?). If the standards are being taught, the students will be fine on
  22. This is not a scam. I am close friends with their leadership team. Not only did they steal Boy Scout equipment, but they were caught disconnecting the a/c units and removing wire from the building.
  23. I disagree. I'm not sure what you consider diagnostics - but we are still paying for them. Again - why are we asking our neighbors to pay for our medical care at the threat of a gun? I have issues with this basic tenet. Yes - some people have trouble getting health insurance. THAT needs to be addressed. Not putting the burden on the entire population. This is ridiculous. AND, you should be able to buy a female only policy without male care if you don't need the male care. And, if you're comfortable with your low to no risk of cancer, you should be able to buy a policy that doe
  24. At this point in our lives, convenience is something that I'm willing to pay for. I love Mike at the Medicine Shoppe too. But, his hours and our lives just don't mesh. We actually use Target in Hiram. It's on hubby's way home for work. He can drop off at lunch and pick up after work. The girls all know him by name and ask about me and the boys (we use the pharmacy alot). Once a year, I check prices - calling around, etc. Some places are cheaper on somethings. Some are more. Overall, Target averages about to be not the cheapest, but not the middle of the road cost wise either. We'
