It's not the restrictor plates, it's that stupid wing on the back.

While the restrictor plate is responsible for the pack and the driver frustration that leads to crash drafting, you are correct that any aerodynamic device that improves downforce going forward will create lift when you are going backwards at 200 MPH. Chaparrel experimented with a "flipper" wing that was driver controlled to reduce drag in the long straights, but I imagine that such a device could be automatically deployed when the car suddenly goes backwards. You could even possibly incorporate a giant flap into the top surface of the wing.

AMEN!! When that car came crashing down on the top I just knew it wasn't going to have a good outcome. The fact he crawled out of the car and walked away speaks volumes about the safety of those cars. But, how it kept from crushing his skull is beyond my comprehension - just glad it did!!!!!!!

This is what I was referring to. During and after the race, I heard many drivers complain about the plates. Mark has never really been a fan of Talladega, but he was clearly "frustrated" as was Newman.

some one is going to have to be killed before they (nascar) does something with the plates. when sr. died it was because of the pass below the yellow line so they made it where you cant pass there. so when someone dies from a accident because of the packs then nascar will do something about it..sad but true. it almost happend sunday.
