Thinking of adopting a shelter dog - but I don't have a vet history as this would be our first dog. Daughters are older 10 & 15, Hubby says the dog will be my responsibility (but he takes over when FILs dog visits - and he loves a lap dog), and I'm looking at a Chihuahua (Father has one that we love!). We are familiar with delicacy issues, but I would like some input on local vets, and advice on shelter dogs if you have some. Thanks in advance!! Oh - this is not something just thought about and acting on - I've been looking/researching for about 2 months now.

About where do you live? that would help with vet recommendations.

We have used Dr.Lugar at New GA Animal Hospital for 6 years.

i like the ark as my main vet but have also used hiram animal hospitol and cant complain there either. i guess its where you live..

as far as a shelter dog..find one and spend some time with it at the shelter..for that case find several and spend the exact time with each and make your decision then..i believe most shelters have a "get know" area.

good luck

We love Dr.Lugar and have used The Ark, when they were in the low rent district by K-Mart.

The shelter gets lots of Chi's and mixes, Lhasa's, Shih Tzu's, even yorkies!

If you have no small children that's a plus because those little guys can get hurt easily. Good luck and keep checking back because you never know what will be there from one day to another.

If an owner surrenders a dog, you can adopt it immediately, otherwise strays have to be kept 72 hours.

Adoption fees are $50 to $100, but if they come in neutered they are $50, if not $100

This month they are discounted from $100 to $80 and from $50 to $30 !!

Here's most of them, but there will certainly be more, since I only go a few days a week to take the pictures. Good luck and let us know what you get!

Dallas Animal Hospital on Dallas Hwy. Lovapet works there and can guide you on what you need to do.

As mentioned above, the Paulding County Animal Control Facility gets in Chihuahuas and lots of others to come look at.

Shelter hours are 12 to 5 daily (except Wednesday).

You can also check out: www.petfinder.com for your search.

Best wishes to you to find your new family member!

oh .... and on the vet, just find one you are the most comfortable with. We all have our vets which we love, but ultimately it comes down to who works best with you and your family. They really are very similar in prices and service offerings, really understand that our furry companions are part of the family and not just something that "hangs around". We have the best vets here in Paulding, I'm sure you will find a great furry doctor!

We love Dr. Judy, both of them! They have both seen our menagerie many times and are great and very reasonable, especially with shelter babies.
MY AVATAR: My sweet boy was feral and is still skittish but he is my sweetheart! He and his twin sister, Belle, were 2 on December 28th, 2008. They were rescues from the Cherokee Humane Society.

RIP sweet Ashton. We will never forget you.

Another Dr. Judy fan here! Paulding Animal Clinic is great!

Best of luck with your future new baby. We got our guy from the PCAS/HS last year and he has been the BEST DOG ever!! We went there knowing we wanted to adopt an adult black lab mix (adult black dogs are statistically the very last to be adopted sad.gif ). We couldn't have been happier with our choice... he is definitely a companion for life.

Thanks to all who replied - I'm new at this replying/posting so I tried to post back but must've been doing something wrong......anyway I've found a 6 yr old Chi that is currently being fostered (since July). Foster Mom has given description of temperament - sounds promising. She stated she has two issues: 1 - doesn't like "mean sounding" voices - as in yelling - but what chi does?? and 2 - won't come when called - cowers down and tries to hide when you call her, or runs to her bad (safe zone). Already house trained and crate trained. I am being realistic in that we are not home enough to take on a puppy.

I've requested more pix and some video if they can upload. Is there anything I am missing to ask? Advice is appreciated.
I don't want to make a bad or hasty decision and have to return the dog. I'd like for it to be a perm part of family.

You should ask about vaccination status as well as heartworm testing. I would also check for allergies or medical needs.

See if you can get a meeting time/place which is hopefully neutral open and airy (like a park which accepts dogs). That will give her room to get to you know and you to get to know her. There is a park here in Paulding, at Seaboard & 278 - Tara Drummond Park - which is very dog friendly.

GOOD LUCK!

Dog is thru Cherokee Humane - so I'm not sure exactly where she is being fostered yet. They have stated that she is UTD on all shots. I'll ask about the heartworm and med issues tonight when I call to speak with foster mom. Thanks - see those are the things that I wouldn't necessarily know to ask.

OK - can someone help me understand this......I have been looking for a "furbaby" for approx 3 months now. Investigating costs, researching breeds, and scouring petfinder.com. When I do find a dog I am interested in, I get a 30 page application (I'm exaggerating!), wanting my vet history etc. This is very frustrating! I don't have a vet history because up to this point my kids haven't been mature enough to help, plus we've had previously busy schedules. Now I'd like to adopt a rescue dog vs getting a puppy - I don't have the time to train a puppy - but the rescue groups that I have contacted wanting information on a dog want "more experienced" people, or they want me to complete an application, when all I want to find out is if the dog can handle men, kids, etc. While I understand the importance of placing a furbaby in the right home....what if my home is right, but you won't give me a chance because I don't have previous pet or vet histories???????

don't give up!
Talk with the agencies if possible and explain it all -- or check out shelters which don't have those restrictions/providing information need.

I'm not giving up - just frustrated! But PC Shopper pm'd some good info, so I've sent in an app to Jennifer's Pet Rescue, and was pleasantly informed that my app looked great, but the original dog I was interested in doesn't like men - I kinda like my hubby, so......LOL!! Anyway, tomorrow I'm off to the Pmart to check the adoptables they will have there. I'll just keep looking til I find the right furbaby!

Dr Meeker at Hiram Animal Hospital is the best. We had some issues with another vet in the Hiram area that didn't want to tell us what was wrong with our dog and referred us to another specialist that wanted to take off his leg due to cancer, etc. Long story short, Dr Meeker took us aside, explained things in simple terms, called on her own time to see how our dog was doing, and was just very responsive to our needs. We will always go to her for any animal advice and the whole place seems to be very nice and professional. She is absolutely great and tries to save you money here and there for things. She has a good heart and loves animals.
