Weston is 14 years old and has leukemia. He lives in Powder Springs and has won several wrestling awards on the state level! His uncle believes this will be a 3 year journey of treatments. If you look at his Caring Bridge site... you will find they are planning treat baskets for all the children in the area where he is at the hospital... It's awesome that in such a trying time, they are still thinking of the other children...

Update: October 30th- We will be collecting cans & tabs for Weston. I will see that they are recycled and the money given directly to Weston for his treatments. If you'd like to drop them by the store/office, we're open on Thurs & Fri, 9-5:00 and Sat,9-4:00. If you'd like to save them awhile and have me pick them up, I'll be glad to do that as well. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! With the holidays around the corner. this is a great time to start saving.. for Weston! Thanks so much!

UPDATE:::::: Friday, October 23rd.... THANK YOU to those of you that expressed a concern about the tab program. While the family believed Weston would receive free chemo treatments, they've confirmed their information and I received the following e-mail today. While it isn't the news I'd hoped for.. for Weston, I am glad that they know now and not later! Still, the family has chosen to collect the tabs to donate in hopes that it will still be a help to whoever receives the funds. If you'd like to save your tabs and bring them to us, I will still have a jug in the store as support for Team Weston and will make sure they get them when we have a jug full. I have talked to several people who know Weston and have heard nothing but wonderful praises about him. If nothing else, please keep Weston and his family in your thoughts and prayers... If anyone would like to participate in their project for Halloween, I'll be glad to be the drop off location for those things and will get them to Rusty.

Here's the e-mail I received today:
Cindy,
Since you have brought this to our attention we have done some checking around and you are correct. Weston will not get the free chemo treatments directly, but from what we can tell is that the tabs donated to the Ronald McDonald house will be recycled and the money will be donated to a general fund where they can distribute the money as they see fit. We are going to continue to collect the tabs and donate them to RMH under Team Weston's name. If you guys would like to continue to collect tabs we would appreciate it greatly or if you have changed you mind due to the change in circumstances we'll understand. Thank you for relaying the info on to us. It would have been a huge let down if we had collected all these tabs expecting free treatments and then being denied. Our family has had enough bad news for a while.

P.S.
Team Weston is Collecting Orange Plastic Pumpkins and unopend bags of candy. We are going to put together enough Halloween Pumpkins for all the kids in the AFLAC wing at CHOA. We will distribute these to the kids on Halloween day. If you guys would like to contribute let me know. we would like to have all donations in by thursday the 29th of oct. If we have more than there are kids in the AFLAc center we will continue around the hospital until supplies are exhausted. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Thanks so much,
Team Weston
We Will Win!!

Out of curiosity, do you know who's funding this? The reason I ask is this has come up many times over the last 20 or so years where folks have put a lot of time and effort into collecting the things and it turns out to be a hoax (with good intentions) and there is no program to cover the treatment.

There have been a few limited offers by companies to provide the treatment for the pull tabs, but I didn't think it was wide spread.

Don't get me wrong, I hope there really is a program to provide the funds and that y'all do collect a 'jug' full quickly, but I'd hate for the friends and family to get their hopes dashed by bad information.

I worked with Weston Mother for a short period of time. Weston is also a great baseball player. PM me or call me to let me know where I can drop off the tabs. I have a milk jug full and a small container full. 770-875-5819

I hope, too, that there is a program for this. Snopes.com states it is a myth as related to dialysis. sad.gif Please let us know that the program is for real. I'll be happy to save them and drop them off to you.

I'd like to confirm Weston would benefit as well from the tabs and dialysis. I have a bunch of them, have been saving them, but want to make certain they are going to good use. I typically save them for school functions. Thank you!

I had heard that there were false reports in the past and that's why I called his uncle to verify that it is legitimate. I've just called him again and based on what his sister has told him, they have many people saving them... He says the information came through Children's Hospital/Ronald McDonald House... I hope it is for "real" as there are many people that are working to help him and it will be a blow to this family... I will let you know as soon as I know....

I looked at the Ronald McDonald House Charity website and there is truth to this. However, I can't find that collection of tabs will provide one free treatment. It may be that local chapters set up their own rules for this type of fundraiser, so it's entirely possible a treatment could be paid for with a pop tab donation. I'll keep collecting them until I hear otherwise.

http://rmhc.org/how-...ab-collections/

"After the tabs are collected, the local RMHC Chapter brings the collection to local recycling centers, where they are weighed to determine their value (values can vary significantly). The recycling center then sends the local RMHC Chapter a check for the total value."

Many times, this is based on turning the tabs in for scrap value. If so, it will take a lot of jugs to bring in the $$ for a treatment.

While someone is collecting the tabs, someone else could be collecting the rest of the cans to sell into recyclers directly and turn the proceeds over to the family to help pay their expenses. The cans will bring in more dollars than the tabs.

Good Luck!!

We have at least 100 cans of all sorts. Maybe 150 or so. We have one Large garbage can overflowing with cans.

If you want them you can have them. Does someone come around and pick them up? If so, they can come see us and gladly take all these cans.
