Not sure if they do this everywhere or not. But Polk County schools are out the week of Oct. 19-23. My son is not doing well in a few subjects. So they sent a letter stating he has to go to school 3 of those 5 days to get extra learning time.
My question has anyone elses children ever had to do this? Do they really teach them? Did your childrens grades improve after this? I will be calling the school today to ask these questions. Just wanted to see if anyone on here had any feedback to offer. My concern is that they won't be teaching him, they will just be babysitting him from 9-noon each day.

Those sound like valid questions.

That's something new. I think it would be a great thing for students that are having a hard time with grades. I would see how many students will be in these classes. If there's only a few, then that extra help would help. If there's a bunch of kids, then I don't see how much it could help. I know some kids do better with a smaller ratio of teacher/child.
This would be a good question to ask.

I have never heard of this but if my child needed the extra class time I would have welcomed it. The teacher's must be giving up free time to do this. Sounds like a great idea to me. If you get more details please post them.

Sounds like a great way to provide a little extra tutoring for kids that need the help. I'd ask and if the teacher is actually going to be working with your child during this time I would welcome it.

i wouldn't think that too many teachers would sign up for babysitting duty on a day they weren't supposed to have kids.

A lot of counties are doing something like an intervention after each quarter. If the student is doing poorly they have an opportunity to come in and earn some points to kind of make up for the grades they may have missed out on. I know in Gwinnett County they do this before school and it is 90.00 a class, so if they are offering it free jump on it. East Paulding had something like this the end of the year last year if the students did not pass but were within a 10 point range of passing they could go for 3 days and pass a test and they would pass the class so they could get credit for it. I would call the school and ask.

This also gives some incentive to the kids who can easily do better but slack off.

I am not sure as to why they are off. But they didnt miss any days at all because of the floods. This was planned at the beginning of the school year.

It seems like if something like this is offered it would be better in the long run as well. The kids would get incentive and not be so far behind at the end of the year scrambling just to pass. If they have to go this early maybe those extra days will motivate them not to do so poorly that they would have to go consistently every quarter.

Sounds like a great opprotunity as long as the time is used wisely by both teacher and student!

What will actions will be taken if your child doesn't go? Why don't they offer him the EYP program if he needs help, that's what one of mine did.

Polk County schools have 2 scheduled times a school year -October and March - called Intersession where failing and at-risk students go to school for extra help-time. They did the same thing last year.
It's only vacation time for kids who aren't needing extra help.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Do teachers volunteer to give up their vacation days to work (with pay)?

I don't know that, but since we still have regular Holidays as usual, I assumed the Intercession days are just like regular work days for Teachers, only with less students.

The note said if he didnt attend- There would be lack of evidence that can be used during an appeal/placement hearing for CRCT or re-test. Without evidence your child may not be promoted/placed to the next grade level.

For older kids denial of driving for a certain amount of time. And non- participation of graduation ceremonies for students receiving certificate of attendance.

I am still trying to find out how many kids in each class.

Paulding doesn't have the funds to provide extra support to students due to the funding of a worthless intermurals program.

I finally got an answer today. There will be two schools combined together at this one school. There will be 10-14 children in each room. ( Not sure how many rooms there will be yet) They said they were going to make it fun and teach them the subjects that are on the CRCT test, using the computer and the smart boards.

My husband is a teacher in the Polk County School system and this is a great program for students to get extra help. My husband also said the extra help he will get could make a difference between passing or failing a subject.

I agree this could be a great thing, if they will use it to teach and not play. I am so hoping it helps him, as well as the other children there. Why do they not offer this to more places? Is it because Polk had alot of schools not pass the CRCT tests?

They have been doing it for a while now and it is called 'intercession'. I agree with the poster who said that it would be beneficial as long as there is not a lot of kids. If it is a small group, I think it is great. The teachers do give up their free time, compensated of course, but still...I am sure they would enjoy the time off!

My 16 year old has gone to summer school and "credit recovery" days here in Paulding. He cannot stand regular school days. He says they are a waste of time with disrespectful children who do not let the teachers do their jobs. He hates classes filled with students who do not care about being at school. He has ADHD and it is so very distracting for him to try and be successful with all of the distractions.

The year he went to summer school he asked if regular school could be like that. Short and to the point! No time for playing around. The students came in and got their assignments and got them done. Credit recovery classes are the same way. They come in do the work and move on. It is a great thing for ADHD kids. Quick assignments... no long drawn out time tables... no time for for students to horse around and disrupt the classes. I could go on.

The other thing he complains about are the students who are disruptive and disrespectful to the teachers. The teachers have no authority and the unruly students rule the class.

I talked with a teacher who taught it last year. ANd she said it was so good. It was a diffrenet kind of learning. They make it fun, but to the point. No play time. They do it totally diffrent than a traditional classroom. They use the computer and smart board for most all of it. She said it would help him so much for the upcoming CRCT test time. So why don't every school district offer this? Is it just because Polk County was a failing district or had alot of failing schools?
