What are your thoughts on the "swine' flu outbreak? Will it become a pandemic? How will you protect yourself and your family?

No one is worried or even a little concerned? The U.S. just declared a public health emergency.

I watched the report earlier today. I won't be visiting Mexico any time soon.
Way down deep inside, somewhere, there lives a devil in each and everyone of us. Try as we may, we fail to keep him bound constantly. Gossip is his meat, rumor is his drink. Mean and greedy is his way of expression. He enjoys the pain of others, but will whine and cry like crazy when he gets a bit of the pain, himself.

I will be following it closely.

Last year at work we had a speaker about this, and it is actualkly pretty scary, they where talking about the schools and bigger builders may have to help with sick people if it got to be to much.

I started a topic on it in this forum.. I remebered Pubby being concerned about it,

I'm guessing the flu shot we all got this year won't cover this kind, huh?

I doubt it....

This is what I posted back in Feb 2008

we were given the levels of what will happen when and if this flu breaks out... they are guessing 1- 5 years it will hit us in huge numbers...

there will be 5 levels of preparing for this flu...

The nurse said that as soon as they can get the staff informed on this , then students would be sumorized on this very dangerous flu..

They also said that if it gets to where the schools have to be shut down, then the schools would be used as hosiptals becasue of the huge out break, hosiptals would not be able to hold everyone... and she said that it would take months to get better from this... and that the vacine was being worked on., but some people would not be able to take the vacine..

always try to remeebr wash your hands... cover your mouth when you cough...

Pubby I thought of you when she was breifing us on this...

ok that's all I learned in school today

Shouldn't we call this a pigdemic?

I am actually VERY VERY worried about this. My whole family just got over what I think was the stomach flu. But I am more worried about my husband and mother in law who had a worse case of it. I really truly believe that they had this swine flu. Now that we look back on it and read about all of the symptoms, that is wounded just like this. Me and the kids just had a touch of the symptoms, but they had all of them.

Very very scary.
Proud stay at home mom to 3 children.

Too early to really worry about it, just take common sense precautions... You don't want to create wide spread panic (like AMMO buying) because of a few cases here and there...

Good info here...CDC INFO

We are watching this very carefully in our household. We are going to check our supplies tonight and get anything we may need in case it is not safe to go in public for a few weeks. We have also discussed going to a remote location if things get back.

That is the reason I do not like Atlanta. Too much international traffic coming in and of the airport, plus the CDC and a telecommunication hub makes it ripe for a large outbreak, terrorist attacks, etc.

There is some discussion in our family about whether this a biological attack. Al Quaeda has been working on this type of attack for years.

From what we were told in our meeting last year, President Bush was already aware of this for 4 years, the CDC had briefed him on this..

so the inof has been out there, and the CDC has been working to get all the info out, now the question is... are we preaperd? was this warning taken seriuos?

I refuse to live my life in fear. Nothing is changing in our lifestyle. I will continue to teach the kids good hygene and manners like covering when the sneeze or cough. I will watch the news coverage and if/when it become bad, then i will take action. But I'm not panicing.

that is kinda how i have to look at it too. If i read all the precautions and contradicitons and such on my 13 meds i take 2 times a day i wouldnt take a dang one of them and already be gone. This does worry me, dont get me wrong...all it would take is one little bug to get into my gastrio system and i am a gonner for sure cause i only have half a colon and 5 feet of intestines, but.......i just cant dwell or i will never get my "bucket list" done and i will turn into one of those sad people who feels sorry for herself cause she is terminal. Dont want my kids or HR to remember me all shriveled up and scared all the time. i want to be remembered all nuts and hyper and going llike the mad woman i am till they literally have to tie me down!!!! I have been working on little ones manners when she is eating though cause she is just a little slob...ha. Keep wipes and hand sanitizer in every room in the house!!! ha. I wasnt the best mom in the world cause i worked a lot and i am trying to instill good memories in all my family of me so cant dwell on sickness and being scared if i am gonna keep my head up. THIS IS A SERIOUS THING THOUGH AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL

While there is no vaccine yet. Once the sequence the virus (not sure if they have), it will take 6-8 weeks from the start of production to have a viable vaccine. For this first wave of flu, no there not be a vaccine, but for the second and third waves of the flu, there will be a vaccine. The CDC, WHO, NIH and many other health watch organizations are keeping a very close eye on the developments in Mexico, the United States and around the world that do have confirmed cases. The thing is not to panic but be vigilant. Wash your hands, carry sanitizer and tissues, and follow other hygienic rules. This will lessen your chance to catch the flu. If you do get sick, whether you know for sure it is the flu or not, stay home.

Medicine has come a long way since the previous 1918 pandemic, watch groups have as well. Remember in 1918 the Public Health Service was at odds with the state governments and no one could settle on just one course of action and thus the entire situation was discombobulated and out of sync. I think we are in a very good position this time around. While there will be deaths, there are 200,000 flu deaths each year in the United States.

Once the vaccine is out, I implore all of you to get it as a precautionary measure, and stay clean. If anyone wants more information on the 1918 Flu visit the CDC website, the PBS website, and Pandemicflu.gov. If you want an actual case study of Atlanta, I am currently writing that and have been working on it since 2006. It by no means is finished yet, but it will give you a general idea of how the flu was in Georgia and Atlanta at the time and how the government handled it.

Above all, do not panic. Just be vigilant.
I am just me. No more and no less.
