I'm the president of the PCHS Band Boosters and as part of that job, I run the concession stand during football season. This is something I have volunteered for, as have many before me. I enjoy doing this, because it benefits the kids in the band, of which I have had 3 of my children as members.
This summer, prior to band camp in July, I went to the school to get things prepared for camp, as we use the concession stand to get ice water for the kids during practice. Much to my surprise, my key did not work! Fortunately, the principal Mr. Gottwald just happened to be there and he let me in.
He said the the BOE had all the locks at the school changed over the summer. That makes sense, as its probably a good idea to do this every so often. What I have the problem with is when I asked him can I get a new key, he said NO, because the BOE is not issuing any extras like they had in the past. I was shocked to hear this, not at Mr Gottwald, but at the BOE.
I've done some checking, and neither the band director or the athletic director has an extra key.
Then I find out that the concession stand originally had a unique lock/key system, but they changed it to match the key to the gymnasium building, because the football coaches key did not work the original re-keyed concession stand.
I know the coaches need a key to get water and ice for their practices too, so I don't have a problem with them having access to the concession stand, but why not give them a copy of the original key instead of changing the concession stand key to match the key to the school building!!! I DON'T NEED A KEY TO THE SHCOOL BUILDING, JUST THE CONCESSION STAND!!
This is really senseless, because it is the band boosters organization that paid the money to build the concession stand at the school, and now we can't even have a key to use it!!!
Another example of the mindless policies established by people who are out of touch with reality.

looks like the BOE has locked the parents out once again, i believe this is called "communcation"
paulette, i agree with mrfixit, please find out what the deal is with this, parents can not get involved like the BOE wants, if we are locked out, unless the BOE memebers are going to do all the booster stuff this year and give the parents a break from voulnteer work,

Thanks everyone for your support on this issue. I look forward to hearing from you Ms. Rakestraw. I will send you my contact information privately.
I agree with what lady raider said about making life inconvenient for parent volunteers. There are many (if not all) extra curricular groups that could not exist without the support of the parents.
We volunteer our time, pay our fees, all for the benefit of our children. If we keep getting treated this way by the BOE administration, then pretty soon, we will get discouraged and go away.
And who are the ones who suffer -- the BOE? NO! It's the students who do.
Wasn't it James Carville who coined the phrase, "It's the economy stupid!!" Replace the word "economy" with the word "students". Think about it.

If they give the go ahead to set up a master key system pm me.
This way if there is a "falling out" only the one lock needs to be re-keyed saving BOE $ get it?

I was also told what seemed to me to be an absurdly high price for the job; “Tens’ of thousands of dollars.” I find that hard to believe but I could be wrong, I’m not a locksmith.
We were told this because we had to be made aware of a new lost key fine that was going in effect this year. $25, $100, and $200 depending on if it was a room key, master key, or some other kind of key. Just an FYI

Whew....! Anwtew, your hubby should have bid on that job!!!!!! Just think, if he only bid $10,000.00, "versus tens of thousands," he would probably have gotten the job!

I believe what you say about too many people having keys to school buildings. I've got no problem with the BOE re-keying all the locks at PCHS. Great idea. I'd just like a key to have access to the concession stand. I'll gladly plop down a key deposit if that's what it takes.
I think the best idea is to have a unique key for the concession stand that only opens it, and nothing else at the school. Coaches or team managers who need to have a key should be determined by the athletic department. The Band Boosters have no interest or desire to have a key to the school building. The present concession stand key opens the gym building as I said in my original post.
The Band Boosters used to also have a key to the front gate, and we would like to have one again. The reason for that is twofold:
1. We have parents who do volunteer work to cut and stripe the practice field, usually on a Sunday, when the gates are frequently locked.
2. When we travel to band competitions on Saturdays in the fall, we usually return to the school after midnight. The person driving the equipment truck normally beats the school buses back to school. Although this has not happened often, if the gate is locked, we would have to wait on the buses, and delay unloading the equipment, keeping everyone (students included) later than needs to be the case.
None of the property in the concession stand belongs to the school system. It belongs to the PCHS Band Boosters (a private non-profit corporation) or to Coca Cola Enterprises (drink coolers, ice makers). We always cooperate with other groups (PCHS Football Boosters, middle school football boosters who use it for Saturday morning games) who need to use the equipment, like refrigerators, freezers, coffee makers, Coke coolers, etc. We are doing our best to be team players and just want to be treated like part of the team.

PCHS does have a gazillion keys outstanding over the years. Everybody needs a key. Many don't get returned & fall into the "wrong" hands. I know --- the band boosters wouldn't guard it with their life. Everyone says that.
Yes, the teams/coaches need the key to the concession stand but only if the band boosters will agree to share it. So the coaches get a key. They make copies. Then it is back to the same problem all over again.
If the boosters don't share the key, they are fussed at/cussed at by everyone for "hoarding" everything.
Most folks don't even know the boosters paid for & own the stuff in the stand.
Don't blame the mindless policies of the BOE --- there is no easy way to do it. And, yes, until recently, I had a key to the gate, the bldg, the concession stand, & several other bldgs at PCHS, so I know what I am talking about.

Were you using those keys to sneak in the stadium and pretend you were in band again?!

and that is alot of dog gone money to spend on lock changing, is that something that was voted on? and did the money come from school taxes are what? just curious on how that descison took place, and who made that descion.
and from what i understand, all the locks being changed also meant the lunchroom frezzer, cooler doors, the only one with that key right now is the lunch room mgr. unless the prinpcal has one.
so booster, pta, etc.. you better make sure you can get in the lunchroom when you have a fundrasier or something to put your food up. or at least check on it, so you will not be un prepared,

Come to think of it, I had a key to good ol' PCHS all through my college years because of some various projects I had worked on & needed a key occasionally. Then I heard they changed the key in the mid
But, alas, I never abused the access.
Band. If I had it to do over again, I would have spent more time in other classes. I didn't realize how much I did NOT enjoy band until I got out. Best thing in HS to happen to me was getting out of band & some other things I cannot post on here.
But that was just me.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to pretend to be in the band?
Now, sneaking down and replaying the highlights of a great football career is another thing all together.

Take a drive by Kennesaw Mtn HS one day. Nice new school, 4 years old or so. Big campus, great facilities, etc. Oh, by the way, they have plenty of portables too.
