Hats off to both teams on an exciting championship game! I've been living in Dallas, GA for almost 8 years now, and this game was one of the most exciting & competitive games I've ever seen in this county!
I also thought that it was wonderful to see all of the supporting fans! I know it meant alot to the players & coaches!
Looking forward to next year's season!
Also, congratulations to our 8th grade girls & boys teams for receiving runner-up trophies in the championships! To come from being the #4 seeds headed into the tournamnets, to appearances in the championship games, is an accomplishment to be very proud of!

Hey JetBeauty, I was at the game Friday night. I agree, it was a very entertaining basketball game. I was wondering which one of the players was your son on HJMS. I've got an idea, but I was just trying to confirm. Congratulations on the championship.

Quite honestly, I thought the refs handed Jones the game at the end. Not to call a foul or a jump ball with 6 seconds was just too much for me.

I have to partially agree with Garland. They were very quick with the intentional foul call (probably the right call, but unfortunate) then couldn't find their whistle when they KNEW the boy was trying to foul to stop the clock. The expression on the player's face as he was looking at the ref while hacking the boys arm was sad to witness. The ref definitely should have called that at the end - pretty cowardly to just want the game over.
While it was definitely the best game of the evening and very exciting - it's too bad the game ended on the note it did.
What kind of comment is that? Is this the NFL when you can't comment on the refs without garnishing a fine? Just because the refs stink, which they have ALL year, doesn't mean people can't comment about them.
But, back to your crass and uncalled for comment, I did ref middle school games back when it was Douglas and Paulding counties. So, I think I can state without a doubt that the refs that work the current middle school games leave much to be desired. Does that answer you? Anything else?

Thanks, but I already am a certified official - reffed middle school and high school games for years. My ref comments were not sour grapes, as I did not have a child playing in that game - just an observation. Overall the reffing was decent - just disagreed with the ref not making the call at the end of the game.
The middle school reffing has been pretty poor all year. I try not to argue judgement calls (block/charge, etc.) but the lack of basic knowledge of the rules was disturbing. The refs that hustle, get in position and make the calls I don't have a problem with. The ones that are lazy, making calls that are in the other refs jurisdiction, make incorrect rules calls and have an ego the size of Montana I do have a problem with. Hopefully there was some sort of referee evaluation process set up within this ref organization, but I doubt it. The head of the ref assoc. was, IMOP, one of the weaker refs - anticipating the calls and whistling the foul before one actually occured was one of his biggest problems. Anyways..........enough venting. Overall, the middle school basketball season was very enjoyable.

Wasn't at the game, but I do get to experience the "experts in the stands" all too often. I still say both of you should get certified and get out there to give the kids a top quality ref job.

Garland, with your experience, you should know what it takes to get certified. Check with the GHSA if you are interested. Didn't you say that you used to ref? You should be familiar with the procedure/course/testing.

I make a conscious effort not to abuse or yell at the refs at games. I also hate hearing the "experts in the stands". Just because I disagreed with a call that was made at the end of the Jones game doesn't make me one of the out-of-control parents in the stands who yell and scream. I was just in the stands observing. You're doing Garland and myself a disservice by insulting us without knowing us (at least wait until you know me to insult me!! . ) You do not know my referee experience and background, so I'll try not to let it bother me - but your quick comments thrown out there are irritating and insulting.
I do know what it takes but I take issue with you and your "tone" with me. I agree with the other fellow. You know nothing about me yet you feel like it is your place to insult me and my feelings about the game and the refs. Your arrogance astounds me and you won't let it go. Wait, one minute you criticize me for challenging the ref's call thinking I was just bitchin' and moanin'. Then, when I state my previous experience giving me the background to make said remarks, you tell me to get certified. I am done with you. #30 is my son. He played very nervously, but he came through. He had a nervous stomach ache before he even went to school on Friday, and I could tell that the "nervies" still had him during the game. I actually recorded the game & he's watched it about 10 times over the weekend!

I've learned, just by this season alone, not to blame the refs for much anything. There was blame the first time Jones played EPMS(and won), when they played them the second time(and lost) & finally, in the championships. The bottom line is someone wins & someone loses.
And don't misunderstand me, because I'm not saying that I was happy with the refs, this year(because it was pretty bad). What I'm saying is that we couldn't blame the refs for Jones beating EPMS by SEVERAL points & then, EPMS beating Jones by SEVERAL points. It was the turnovers & poor decisions that attributed the MOST, in BOTH situations!!!!!
I honestly believe that both teams were deserving of the #1 & #2 spots in the championships & during the season, and I think that both teams had the same passion for winning the championship! It showed!! They both played a heck of a ballgame and no one can take that from them.

I agree 100% that the refs rarely - if ever - determine the outcome of a ball game. One of my pet peeves is to hear a coach, player, or parent whine that the refs "screwed them" or "they didn't know they had to play against the guys in the striped shirts as well" or "it was 5 vs 7 out there". JetBeauty was correct that in middle school basketball this year, turnovers and bad decisions are what lost games for teams - not ref calls or lack thereof. That was a great championship game between the two best 7th grade boys teams. I appreciated the excitement in an otherwise long, long night of basketball.

I can't believe you remember me asking about AAU. Seems like it's been so long ago. Yes, he played with a team out of Smyrna called the Georgia Heat. He actually did very well, even though it took him a minute to adjust to that "scrappy/run-n-gun" type of play. His team received 3rd place in the YBOA state championships on last year. This year he'll be playing with the PC Stunners. It's a travelling team that's being formed over here in the county. It has been formed by invitation only, but 5 of the 6 county middle schools will be represented w/ a player or two. I think Jones will have the most participants, with a total of 4. I think there's going to be 3 from Moses, 1 from Dobbins, possibly 3 from South Paulding, and 1 from East Paulding. Nothing has been finalized yet, but wish us luck with it. The coaches seem to be pretty excited about it!

Wow that sounds great. I am so glad to see AAU/YBOA teams starting up in this county. When mine were coming thru, we had to go to Cobb or Douglas to get on a team. I believe your son would agree that the spring/summer season is tougher than the school season. It's a more physical type game, plus most of the teams players are good, not just a couple players like in school ball. But it certainly gets you prepared for HS and later on.
The basketball talent level is down in Paulding. Mainly because the kids just don't have an opportunity to learn and play against better talent. Hopefully this will improve in time.
