The Internet is everywhere but few realize that its local reach is greater in Paulding than in most places in the Atlanta metro.

It is easy to overlook this because Paulding does not have what one would call the 'high tech' reputation.

Despite that fact, the key point regarding Paulding's 'wired' nature is the presence of children and an astounding home-ownership rate.

Frankly, we at Paulding.com were surprised -- happily so -- and had to think about this figure a bit to make sense of it.

Of greatest importance is the reason most of the folks moved to Paulding in the last decade. They did so to raise their kids, give them a good place to grow up and prosper. Part of providing for them is to provide them the tools to attain their future. There is no doubt a common understanding that the Internet is here and will become, through time, a more important tool for younger people tomorrow than today.

Second, the age of many of the newest parents here are on the younger-side of 40 meaning they have been involved with computers going back to their days in school. Even though those PC's were rarely connected to the Internet -- who knew what the Internet was in 1990 -- PC's from the lowly Apple II and Trash mega_shok.gif, had been in schools and classrooms since the early 1980's. Most of these young adults are, by definition, technologically saavy.

Finally, combine these facts with the reality of the metro's top (or second top) home ownership rate -- over 86% -- and you have a population that is young, raising kids and wired.

That 89% of the 428 high school juniors at all three of Paulding's high schools would report Internet access in the home now makes sense. (This figure was obtained from a Chattahoochee Technical College survey. They were exploring the potential for interest for computer-based Internet delivered courses and were curious of the numbers of kids who had home access to the Internet.)

It also makes great sense for Paulding.com and for Paulding's future as the Internet, particularly with the expansion of broadband, promises to supplant newspapers and other media, particularly in poorly served media markets such as Paulding. This is proving true in those countries such as Japan and South Korea where broadband is being heavily promoted and used.

The reason is simple.
  • First the population has made a significant investment in the tool necessary to acquire local (as well as national and Internation news, games, information and entertainment) through the Internet
  • The cost of producing an Internet local news site, while not insignificant, is much less expensive than the cost of producing a media product using other forms including TV, radio and newspaper.
  • Because the Internet allows interaction and even contributions -- not of money but of information easily from its users in an open-source approach to information -- the costs of producing local news can be even lower.
  • The additional benefit of networking, possible on an Internet site devoted to local items and news of interest, is an desireable by-product of the greater interest and involvement in the community fostered by the website.
Bottomline, Now is the time and Paulding.com is the place. Join us now..
