Austin addresses PBA; celebrates their fifth year with news of economic development

Paulding's Business Association celebrated its fifth year with news from Commission Chairman David Austin dropping such newsy tidbits as Harrison Ford, who is one of the stars of the movie "42" - the Jackie Robinson Story - was expected in town in mid July for filming. (Watch the video for the details).

The discussion ranged from the success at the movie studio - including location of additional ancillary or associated businesses - to tidbits like the engagement of Panattoni Development Company, one of the worlds largest industrial developers with interest in the county's offerings ... to of course today's announcement of a deal with MG International for expansion of their local plant.

There's more but you're going to have to view the video to get it (or wait for others to post newsy points in this topic for mayberries.)

For those who viewed this live, we did fix the variations in the audio levels and cleaned it up a bit.

Okay...here is what I have so far.

His explanation of MGI was interesting and enlightining....The fact of MGI expanding in and of itself is no big deal. However, with them expanding we are able to issue in some tax incentives for other companies to move into the area. Did I understand that correctly?

This is a very interesting video.

Others need to watch it and comment.

I found the Hadad company to be intriguing.
Please tell me if they will be hiring local people or relocating people from their other offices? This will make a big difference.

I think it is more that MGI taking them will help publicize that you can get these incentives here. Since Georgia is becoming more of a place for automotive manufacturing, companies that make things for these companies are also migrating here.

Before we got the opportunity zone, you'd have to go south of Macon to find a place to get these kinds of incentives. You can't get them in the Atlanta Metro Area except maybe in the west end of Atlanta. Here we are, largely considered a teir 1 county (metro county) with what, Tier 3 or 4 incentives ... One of the reasons we were continually losing out Cobb, Gwinnett or some county in South Georgia was that without incentives, Cobb kicks our butt ... and without incentives, Taylor (or some other rural) county kicks our butt.

Now we have some of the key incentives of non-metro Atlanta that aren't available in Metro Atlanta except they are here.

If the economy avoids a deep nosedive and if we can keep this together for the next five years, we can increase the commercial portion of our property tax digest from about 16 percent to easily over 30 percent or more ... and help revive the home values at the same time.

This would actually give us the ability to recover faster than the Atlanta metro as a whole.

Pubby: You are correct in that it's about establishing momentum and putting Paulding on the list of locations companies should consider for their future locations or expansions. I will point out to you that while the opporunity zone is a huge boost to Paulding and we have some unique properties within in it that other communities don't have the creation of these zones continues to increase monthly and there are many zones now in Metro Atlanta and more are coming. What those locations don't have is a combination of a skilled workforce, county owned industrial sites that are being planned and developed, an airport with lots of property for development and a property tax abatement strategy for both new and existing businesses. This is what is starting to set Paulding apart from the competition. This will all become apparent over the next two weeks so stay tuned.

I did enjoy the video and gained a lot from it.
How soon will the new businesses come into play?

And I ask again...will they be hiring local people or will they be relocating their current workers here?

Proud Independent.....

I have never REALLY kept up with the County Politics until the last few years.
Forgive me if I am wrong but you seem to be in the know.
Do you work for the County and if so, in what capacity.
I am not asking this in a rude way, I truly want to know.
The last few posts that you have written lead me to believe that you know what you are talking about and I am glad to be reading the things that you are sharing.
If you don't want your identity revealed here can you inbox me or just verify whether or not you do hold a posistion?

Thank you.

Look I think David deserves a second term, yes you heard that from me of all people. He came in and spent some time cleaning up from the administration before. Then he has moved the county forward in some important area's,I just don't want to move backwards. I like driving by that new medical building and the new hospital under construction. Yes there is furlough days but I am aware there in other counties and states. So there you have it if Tony Crowe could match that then he would be the man but I am sorry to fear a man that hasn't even finished high school to run our county scares me.:ninja:
