Because they bloom everyday!!!!! Now, I just need some different colored ones. I don't like the double bloom flowers, they are just not as pretty as the BIG single flower :yahoo: :yahoo:

The flower in the first picture is called a Lord Baltimore Hibiscus. It's all sprawled out and drooping, I will go out in a bit to tie the stems up, most all of the blooms just popped out today.

Those are beautiful. How do you protect them in the winter?

What are the different colors??? I have only seen the orange/peach color, yellow and white, other than the colors I have. I really really want the yellow hibiscus with the red center. I'll find them again one day. Kroger sold out before I could get me one. I got them in 2010 and this is the second year they have came back.

My link

These are some pretty exotic looking blooms, might be worth ordering one or two. My MIL grows them all over her yard in Florida and they have become my favorite flower. I gave up on trying to grow any here because it gets too cold, but after seeing yours, I'm having thoughts about trying again.

Actually, not much. I do NOT cut the stems. I leave the stems to protect the rest of the plant from the frost, snow and/or Ice. I also put a little exra pine straw on the plant and around the bottom.

Beautiful!!

I love hibiscus, I had the Lord Baltimore (I think: huge red ones?) and they came back every year but I think they petered out after about 5 years. We dug them up and I put camillias in their place. I've always wanted some red camillias.

Walter Reeves talks about the types that are hardy in our area. Some are tropical while others will survive cold winters:

Has anyone grown this variety?

Turn of the Century Hardy Hibiscus

Blended color petals of this hibiscus give the appearance of large pinwheels. Each petal makes the transition from deep reddish pink to light candy pink. These exotic, tropical-looking plants are actually quite hardy. Superb as a specimen or back-border planting.

MANY Types of hardy hibiscus. Probably over two dozen regular and hybids that will do great here with no protection!! Looks like a Luna Rose in the other pic. Great bloomers with nice shape. There is also a luna red, luna white, and luna swirl, the lunas are NOT hybrids and will grow from seed easily. The Lord Baltimore is one of 20 or so hybrids that will seed once in a blue moon, and when the do you dont know what or if it will bloom

My two Lord Baltimores out front have at least 20 blooms a day from early June until early October!

Other hybrids include Cranberry Crush, Summer Storm, Fantasia, Crown Jewels, Lady Baltimore, Jazzberry Jam, Kopper King, Plum Crazy, Robert Flemming( named for one of the Flemming Brothers who created most of the hybrids. Great read on these three can be found online), Sultry Kiss, Berrylicous, Fireball!

Other non hybrids besides the Luna include the White and Red Texas Stars.(I know before I had my surgery last week surepip had some nice sized texas stars for sale!)

PM me if you have any questions and I will be glad to help! I have Six or seven types growing in my yard (last count anyway.lol)

Also remember hardy hibiscus comes basically in three colors: Pink, Red and white. Certain ones can be so pink they look purple(cranberry crush), or so pale they look yellow(old yellar), but they are still just one of those three. No bright oranges, yellows, or any of the bright ones you see on the tropicals, but then again you dont have to mess with these awesome plants in winter! yea!!

About the only hibiscus that is truly yellow looking and can be planted here is ....OKRA!!! Yes, okra belongs to the hibiscus family, but it, like the tropicals will die back and NOT come back the next year!!

Do you have any yellow or peach colored ones?? I will make a "special" trip up your way, this time. Last year I was too busy to get by there. I only want the ones that will come back, year after year.

I am also passionate about hibiscus, I have the ones you have pictured in pink, red, white and a pale pink white mix. I also habe texas star in red and white. And a beautiful pale yellow hibiscus with a purple center. All are hardy and easy to grow from seeds. If you would like to try any of mine remind in the fall and I will get you some seeds.
