Even with an external fan, the buildup of dust can keep the computer from cooling efficiently.

^^^ This
My son lost his laptop to overheating due to dust buildup. My other son and I both had sudden shutdowns that we believe were due to overheating due to dust buildup and heavy CPU loading. We cleaned them immediately and haven't had a problem. I assume yours is not under warranty since you are not taking it in so it shouldn't be a problem taking the bottom off. For mine, since it's a work machine, I blew air in the exhaust, a big cloud of dust came out all over the machine.
All of them seemed to have problems after about 2 years of pretty heavy use.
Oh yea, Pubby says "Ditto"
